- PAINTING VIDEO DESCRIPTION - This canvas painting tutorial will take you through easy step-by-step instructions on how to draw and paint this storybook landscape portrait painting of "BACK TO SCHOOL” with acrylic paint. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but, here in the United States, I start seeing “Back to School” ads and commercials within 2 weeks of a school year ending. It’s crazy! Most grade school classes finish up around the end of June, and, about 2 weeks later, right after the Fourth of July, all the red, white and blue paraphernalia seen in supermarkets, shops and convenient stores, is immediately taken down and replaced with notepads, backpacks, pencils and pens, and clothing sales, reminding everyone that the classroom bell is going to start ringing again in less than two months. It’s like kids nowadays don’t have time to breathe and enjoy a long summer without the thought of having to go back to school right away. Regardless of how you feel about it, the first day of a new school year is an exciting and emotional time for both kids and parents. Some kids are excited to see their friends while others dread the inevitable schoolwork. And, for parents, it can be tough for some to see their little ones leave the home, while others are just anxious to get back to some sort of a normal daily routine. Although it’s been many, many, years for me, I can still remember walking to school with my older siblings on an early autumn brisk morning. If I had known then how nostalgic I was going to feel about it, I probably would have asked my parents to take a picture. But, some forty plus years later, I get to paint about it. So, join me and paint with acrylics this nostalgic and endearing image of you with your brother or sister, your own kids, or grandkids walking or getting on the bus to go to school. The first lesson you’ll learn is how paint an out-of-focus bokeh background with a country road, bushes, grass and foliage with autumn colors for a seasonal landscape scenery. After learning how to draw two children using a dot-to-dot method, you’ll use color theory to blend and mix colors to create a skin tone and base colors for your clothing and backpacks as the foundation for these objects. Then you’ll paint highlights and shadows on the girl's or boy's skin, shirts and bags for contour, depth and dimension, giving your objects a 3-D appearance like a photograph. Then you'll paint long female hair in ponytails using a layering technique. Using only 3 brushes and 8 colors, you’ll create this inspirational Norman Rockwell inspired image with a storybook narrative. Paint loosely and make it an abstract painting, paint with oils to make it fine art, use bold yellows and red for pop art! Paint at home, alone, or with friends! Have a date night, paint party, or virtual paint night. Paint with gouache, oil paint, or water colour, any medium will work! Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 3/4 inch flat bristle (large), #10 Bright (medium) #4 round synthetic (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, green oxide, deep yellow, ultra-marine blue, burnt sienna (rust), fluorescent pink, burnt umber (brown)
Other: Chalk, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat for landscape with black, white and green
2. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Finish road and background trees with black, yellow, dark green (made in step 1), green, white, rust, brown
3. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint shrubs on road with black, dark green, green, yellow, white, rust, brown and gray (made in step 1)
4. Chalk - Draw outline for girls
5. #10 round brush - Paint base coat for skin, clothing and backpacks with pink, white, brown, black, rust and gray
6. #4 round brush - Finish skin with skin tone (made in step 5), brown and white
7. #4 round brush - Finish clothing with light blue (made in step 5), white, brown, black and gray
8. #10 round brush - Finish backpacks with light pink (made in step5), maroon (made in step 5), brown, white, black and fluorescent pink
9. #10 round brush - Paint base coat for hair with brown and black
10. #4 round brush - Finish hair with black, brown, white, yellow and skin tone

I finished this yesterday, I changed the two girls for two boys. I tell you when I shared with my daughter my younger grandson said "brother!" , which means he noticed how much the older boy looks liked his older brother. So mission accomplished. Thank you Michelle

Brings back memories of the first days of school. I always wanted a black & white composition book. I don't recall using backpacks back then so I always looked forward to offering to carry a cuties books for her. I saw this today and instantly loved it. Except the painting has two girls, but as I watched the video I saw the outline looked like boy's and a light bulb went off in my in my head. In September my two grandsons will be attending school. One is going to second grade and his younger brother starts nursery school. I am putting this on my future painting list. Thank you Michelle.

Am I the only one having an anxiety attack because the big girls back back isn't right? Where's the part of the strap that goes under her arm and connects to the lower part of the pack? I know I'm going to screw that up.
