For a first time player I think this is one of the best rules explanation for the game. I watched this yesterday afternoon, then read the rules booklet and played with my friends in the evening. It took them around 4 rounds to get it but when they got it - they really enjoyed it. So thanks a lot for this tutorial - from Mumbai.
Just bought this game after playing it with some friends once, I got bewitched by it. This rules video was great and comprehensive even ten years after being uploaded.
Awesome, looking forward to more from you guys! And love the concept! This is something that every designer/company should be doing on their own, glad to see you take up the mantle. And do a good job at it.
Thank you! This was very helpful, even if you are going through an older version of Citadels. I like these matter-of-fact videos. Thanks, even if I'm commenting 5 1/2 years after you made the video.
Nice explanation for the amazing card game "Citadels". I actually discovered that I misread the rules in one important detail and thus used to play it in a wrong way - we used to play reveal the character immediately when the thief took his money. Another detail must have been added in newer editions of the game, because in my edition, I definitely don't find a rule stating that you can't build the same district twice. Nevertheless, this gives a very good overview of one of my absolute favourites - a game that never gets old; every round is very different, and it has some amazing ingredients from different game "disciplines" e.g. Old School RPG (despite this one being limited).
A great run through, even years after you published this it is still clearly a valuable resource. Thank you for your contribution to boardgamers. PS. My citadels (only bought last week) did not come with the expansion built-in (I'm good with the base game for now). And cardboard tokens for gold, and a crown card instead of a token. More affordable production/sales costs I guess :-)
Whats great about these vids is they're always relevant and useful to those that need them. no matter how many years later. I truly wish you success in this endeavor. I think there could be a decently sized audience for this type of vid. I think its all about visibility, I fell onto it on BGG but most will never see. You should do a bunch of popular games i.e Exploding kittens(whatever party game is the new hotness), Arkham/Eldritrch Horror, Scythe, Codenames, Agricola, Twilight Struggle, The classics & Hotness BG's. Just getting eyes on it is the issue. Good job, Hope to see more.
Thank you so much for this compliment! We are definitely consious of the need to do games that people want to see and some of your suggestions (including Agricola and Codenames) are on our filming schedule for the next couple of months. We are always on the look out for the new hotness too :)
Thank very much for the great comment. One of the driving forces behind the show came from the fact that we really could have used something like it ourselves when buying new games. Really glad we could fit in with you getting Citadels, its a fantastic game that we have really enjoyed as a gaming group. Carcassonne next!
so.. many... rules... mind melting...AAAAAAH!!!!! I will never learn to play this game till i get to play it with someone who already knows it :P thats how I learned all the other games, sadly no one i know knows how to play this game lol but great job covering the rules, i just suck at this :P
First time seeing your channel, this will be one of my first subscribes on youtube thank you for the awesomely done, awesome content! lol Seriously, good work.
We try and use on-screen text prompts to hammer home the important parts of the rules and we now have the recap sections for this as well. We're definately bear that in mind when filming in future though.
Learning to play with someone else who already knows is a really good way to do it, providing they really know the rules of course. We're here to try and help bridge the gap for you if you don't have anyone though. If you do try and learn with someone else who doesn't know how to play, just take it slow and refer to the manual, or our video, as you go. You'll get there in the end.
Quick question, for chararacters like the merchant and architect, when it says do 'something' per action, does an action include building districts? eg. draw 2 cards per action, and you build 3 districts, so u get 6 cards for that + the 2 for picking ur 2 gold that turn?
Two game we would love to cover! In fact, Thunderstone is in the extended Skip the Rules library and we are all Vlaada fans. Look out for a possible Galaxy Trucker video in the near future.
Questions: 1) But what if the Assassins murders character who has not been chosen by any players since no one know another's character? Then his murder was nothing? And same with thief.. if he robs character whos not in the game? 2) Let's say I'm Warlord, so when I build a red building into my city, can I take one gold after building or do I have to wait for another hand to use that ability? And if I can use it in this hand, do I get to build my building like one gold less? Thank you! :)
+wraaowh these are both good questions: 1) If the assassin or Thief target a character who has not been chosen, this simply means that thier ability goes to waste for that turn. This adds to the aspect of dedcution inherent with playing those roles. If you choose the assasin or thief its a good idea to keep in mind the cards you are handing to the next person. 2) If you are building any building that matches your character colour you can gain the bonus coins at any time. So you are correct in saying that you would be able to build the building, then gain the gold for it in the same turn. While this does in essence lead to buildings being 1 gold cheaper, you have bare in mind that if you didnt have enough gold to build them in the first place that you cant simply reduce the price.
Yeah, you guys did an awesome job... I just find it hard to remember when there are many rules and sub rules, but if I had a single constructive criticism it would be to speak slower when going over details of complex rules, I found sometimes I couldn't keep up :P but again that could be just me.

Really glad you found it of use and, more importantly, that you enjoyed the game!

Also....the timing of this is astonishing, as I bought the game the day you released this video.

Great video. Quick question (8 years later!). Some of my purple district cards have text/abilities...how and where does this fit in? Cheers
Excellent! Hate reading the rules... This helped a lot!

nicely put this. No flaws here so far as I can tell. Liked! :)
