You don't talk about indie rock enough - love this!
Ys! I've been waiting for this for ages.
Haven't seen one negative comment about this kind of music.
@@neilmeadowcroft7569 Because it's good:)
I’m so pleased with this I’m not even upset he didn’t mention Sleater-Kinney.
@@kendouble9705 There's just so many that you're gonna leave some out if you only do 10.
0:44 - Wolf Alice
2:04 - Angel Olsen
3:24 - Big Thief
4:44 - Courtney Barnett
5:58 - Alvvays
7:21 - HAIM
8:44 - Boygenius
10:04 - Sharon Van Etten
11:26 - Jenny Lewis
13:04 - St. Vincent
I can think of a different top 10 female indie rock artists and haven't even listened to a large portion of this, so I'm excited to dig in and hear what Rick thinks.
I am proud to be Kenyan who listens to all of these :)
Ehgg
Well, there are chapters in the progress bar
very refreshing! I only know St Vincent, and she has been around for ages!
FINALLY A VID SHOWCASING GREAT MODERN ARTISTS
I'm hoping it's the start of a trend! So many great artists go cover.
When does modern start?
@@trippstreehouse Does it matter?
@@matthewdennis1739 ...yes? isn't that how categorizing works?
@@Hyperlink1337 I don't remember what I was thinking a week ago, but I think my point was that I don't think there's a definitive, consensus on what qualifies as modern. Any point we throw out there will be arbitrary and anyone outside of our conversation may not agree with that benchmark. As far as I know there is no specific guideline for what constitutes modern music.
My sixteen year old daughter introduced me to a number of these artists you mention here. Yes, today's youth can, still recognize great music.
Depends. Some for sure.
Have a young nephew who has that ability.
Interview Annie! She's so well spoken. I would love to hear what your conversation would be like.
I full heartedly second this, you two would get along
Yes I’d love to see that amazing artist and engineer
Yes! Annie Clark x Rick Beato interview would be amazing
Yes! Her new album is great, too.
Yes to this!
Warpaint is an underrated all female indie rock band. Their sound is so unique
One of my favorite bands
was on indie radio today
I discovered Warpaint 3 months ago. They will never leave my car... ever
one of my all time favourites. surprised they weren't on this list
Warpaint is so freakin' good! Those women are so unbelievably talented. I love everything they've done. They should be huge!
Wolf Alice instantly came to mind, one of my favourite bands. Glad you mentioned them right away! I've seen them live twice so far and they're so good
Yes. Her vocal range is unreal. Blue Weekend is so hypnotic.
Same!! Was waiting for this moment for a long time 😅
Discovered them through Trainspotting2
Adrienne Lenker of Big Thief follows in the Joni Mitchell tradition of tuning the guitar to the song, lots of unique tunings. Seen her live, totally worth it
Of man, I just checked out her song, Not a lot, Just forever, beautiful, thank you.
These are all immensely better than almost all the songs on the Spotify charts.
Amen!
The great thing about listening to an indie list is I'm almost DEFINATELY going to find songs i like or don't mind listening to, as opposed to finding most chart songs a hard turn off with the rarest of instances of an okay song.
That's why they aren't as popular. 😂
Breaths of fresh air.
My vote is you just drop that word 'almost'....it was a waste of 6 characters. 😉
I will never get tired of how excited and inspired Rick finds music. I don't have 1/100th of his knowledge but relate to the excitement.
Metric has been putting out great music for 20 years with Emily Haines beautiful voice, including this year.
Check out Metric - Days of Oblivion from the Fronterra 2 album (with nods to Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, and John Lennon)
Her solo work (w the Soft Skeleton) is also spectacular.
As someone who has criticized the coverage of the Spotify top 10 and asking you to cover some of the great songwriters working today...I gotta give you props for this video! Keep it coming, so many more in disparate genres.
Adrianne Lenker from Big Thief is definitely one of the greatest songwriters working today!
So glad you mentioned Alvvays, her voice is so dreamy. Japanese Breakfast has done a good job at breaking into mainstream. Also love music from Men I Trust and Beach House. My favorite branches of Indie Rock are Dream Pop and Surf rock. Best wishes!🙏🏼🫶🏼
Japanese Breakfast has some great Tunes. Surprisingly they are still relatively unknown
Men I Trust! 😍
Great to hear Courtney Barnett and HAIM here! Just love their music!
Check out Angie McMahon also an Aussie artist
Same love them both
Courtney's voice is Indie music.
Also good to check out some of the pioneering female indie rock artists who paved the way for this recent generation - Liz Phair, Belly, Veruca Salt, Hole, The Breeders, The Cranberries and a more recent classic example, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
...and PJ Harvey
Great video ! Love to see more indie rock lists! Some suggestions for the next time.
P.J.Harvey, La Luz, Horsegirl, Gossip, Bat for Lashes, The last Dinner Party, Meg Myers, Goat Girl, L.A. Witch , Death Valley Girls, Torres, Blondeshell to name a few.
The Sundays , 24 hours, is a gem. Beautiful Johnny Marrish guitar part. One of the best female vocal indie bands from the early/mid 90's.
The Sundays ❤️
here's where the story ends is one of the most nostalgic songs i can think of
That one and Goodbye. It’s on repeat over here.
Yess...yes..yes..🥰
3 amazing albums, a few singles, and they hung it up. Happy to say I got to see them live on their last US tour. Too few people know them.
A couple up-and-coming UK artists worth mentioning with fantastic debut albums:
- Wet Leg (won a Grammy)
- The Last Dinner Party
Both fantastic
The Last Dinner Party is so MUUUUCH GOOD
Saw Wet Leg open for Florence + The Machine in Seattle. They are GREAT live, too.
Surprised Wet Leg didn't make the list.
love last dinner party
Love this! Great to see Indie rock featured. More videos on Indie styles would be amazing.
Sharon Van Etten's newest album is UNREAL!
Wolf Alice’s Blue Weekend is my favorite album of the last 10 years.
Absolutely!
Agreed. I’m 70 and my daughter is 24 and we both adore this band
They are great but Rick is stretching to call them "female" since they are a 4 person band and only Ellie is female. So is Garbage a female band? Pretty sure Butch Vig would disagree. Fleetwood Mac ? Rush ?
@@nedhill1242well it says female artists and not female bands. So I think there is nothing wrong.
@@nedhill1242 Well yeah, maybe "singer" would have been better word here.
That Lo-Fi sound of Alvvays always gets me.
Moreover, their ability to churn out fantastic pop melodies track after track, album after album is beyond comprehension.
You mean they alvvays get you?
I saw them live this past summer and they were amazing. The sound quality was outstanding.
They're from here, Toronto.
Never expected to see Glen in these parts, gonna need a cooking playlist!
One of your best videos in a while. Thank you for introducing me to a few new great artists.
Also I would love if you did a deep tracks video series. Something similar to the "what makes this song great" series, but where you break down some of the artists lesser known songs. I feel these songs are often more technically impressive, even if they take a few listens to truely appreciate.
I liked everyone of these. Going down a rabbit hole this morning and getting all these. Do more like this Rick!! So good.
Beach House, great Dream Pop
Beach House may not be “Indie rock” but it’s damn good songwriting. Some call it dream pop. I just call it good music. 🤷🏻♂️ Victoria is my favorite female artist EVER.
@@thatsamazin- yea but I had to give it a “category” I’m with you though. If it sounds good it is good
I would love to see him try to figure out some of their chord progressions some day. To quote Space Ghost, "Your guitar would EXPLODE in your hands." (I think they would be more of a two-piece than a "female artist" so I guess they're not really for this list...)
@@thatsamazin- Beach House is shoegaze/dream pop but they are an indie band.
Beach house is indie rock
Great to hear Wolf Alice mentioned here! Love that band! As well as Courtney Barnett! I would also mention 'The Kills' as well as the band 'Daughter' and of course 'PJ Harvey' to add to the list! Great video Rick! :)
Good point. Where is PJ Harvey?
@@thebeareducationaltheatreo6709 she’s around she put out a record last year. It was pretty good
But Wolf Alice isn't really indie, more straight up 80s/90s retro but some indie and its a BAND with a female lead singer. That would make Garbage a " female" band using Rick's definition. Fleetwood Mac etc. So yes, I love them, but he's stretching to put them on this list in 2 ways.
PJ Harvey more art rock/post-punk than Indie, at least how Rick defines it here
Just saw The Kills in February, for my third time.
I’ve been a fan of indie rock since the early 2000s and there’s no question women have really been carrying the torch for the genre in recent years. Great picks, Rick! Phoebe Bridgers is fantastic, and I’ve really been enjoying Soccer Mommy lately as well. We saw Death Cab the other night and a band called Slow Pulp opened for them. Beautiful female vocals with kind of a 90s alt rock sound reminiscent of bands like Belly and Cranberries
Love this and all these artists! Def want to see more indie content. Interviews, breakdowns, etc. Indie music has been my main interest all my adult life.
Boygenius are kind of amazing, they manage to combine really classic elements but make it sound fresh (so it still appeals to 50-somethings like me)
Feist is an unbelievable artist who keeps getting better and more assured every album
Yeah, if you only know that counting song you are missing out on a lot
Love me some Feist!
I saw Annie on a YT video interview a few years ago, and in the intro she was just sitting on a couch noodling around on her guitar, and I swear it sounded like Hendrix had never died. Lady can play.
I’ve been waiting for a video like this. More coverage of female musicians, please!
This is my wife's entire Spotify playlist, so I'm super familiar with all of these. Great rundown. Just saw Alvvays in Phoenix last night.
You’re wife has awesome taste !
MOLLY. ❤❤❤
If female indie rock is a genre, it might be my favourite. Something about female voices and lyrical perspectives draws me in. A few other great ones that didn't make it on to your list:
Julia Jacklin
The Beths
Best Coast
Soccer Mommy
Cate Le Bon
Weyes Blood
Aldous Harding
PJ Harvey
Anna Von Hausswolff
Aimee Mann
Add Fazerdaze, Japanese Breakfast and Sunflower Bean to that list.
Hazel English, Men I Trust, Tamaryn, Eleni Drake, Slow Pulp, Beach House, Widow's Peak, Beverly, Viviane Girls
Cocteau Twins
Beach Bunny are okay, bit more poppy indie i guess.
The Beths are the absolute best!!!!
Great songs, great artists. I'm 61 and I'm proud to say that I bought (cd or vinyl) 7 out of 10 of these albums. A real boomer...
Rick
This is pretty much a summary of my last 5 years or so listening. Another enjoyable video. Great channel.
Rick, not sure if she squarely falls into "Indie rock" but you must be aware of Madison Cunningham? Unbelievably creative musicality, addictive guitar licks, odd meters, you name it, she can do it. The stuff Sting couldn't skip after 8 bars.
Love Madison Cunningham. Good call.
Indie isnt really a genre. To my mind, something is indie if it is done for art. You can hear it in the way they don't half-ass their work. It always sounds like it took some time to do it right, because they weren't willing to compromise. Compare it to more popular music. Every day I hear something new that makes me wonder "why make a pop song if you can't find a good singer?" or "are we really out of talented people to put in pop songs?" All the popular genres have this weird way of prioritizing the visual aspects of an audio medium... I think they must not care about talent, only about looks. If she'll make some dicks hard, I got all the autotune in the world and I'll make it work... yeah. Feels a bit like that. Indie has the opposite feel.
Madison Cunningham is one of the best newer songwriters in my opinion she’s simply great
she's indie-folk-rock-singer-songwriter I guess? 🤷 (I absolutely love her work, she's insanely talented)
I thought of her instantly. She's amazing!
Big thief is amazing!! You need to check Adrianne Lenker ‘s solo records if you love lush chords played in beautiful alternate tunings.
One of the best release this year is Bright Future.
@@joesmith4443true that!!!
Lenker is the best songwriter currently working IMHO, both her Big Thief and solo work. I was going to throw a fit if she wasn't on this list. 😁
My only “complaint” is the Sadness is a gift track on BF is basically a rewritten “Hello In There” by John Prine but maybe it’s an homage to him??
@@IncredibleGoliath Rick left out Fiona Apple. Very talented as well
Great video, Rick! Indie and Punk was my childhood in the 80s and 90s. Please do more of this in the future.
So cool to see you talk about Alvvays! I just saw them in Athens a couple weeks ago and they absolutely crushed it. Blue Rev is my favorite modern album since In Rainbows.
Rick you knocked it out of the park with this video. As a young guy whos really into indie rock this video was a great referesher
Great to see this, but what about Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy??
Women led indie rock is a really strong genre right now.
2 great picks
Was totally bummed not to see Snail Mail here. Lindsey is a helluva songwriter and a really good guitarist as well.
Snail mail in my opinion has deeper catalogue than soccer mommy
Hey Rick, thank you for your top 10 indie ladies! I’m a fan of Wolf Alice, St. Vincent, and boygenius!
Do more of this indie stuff Rick. Great video.
"No autotune," *smiles*
Sadly they all use it
@@joesmith4443 If it doesn't sound like it, it's okay.
@@Pandamasque haha, yea that’s the trick. The one that bothers me more is the modern slammed with compression masters (brickwalled) and the “perfect tempos”
@@joesmith4443 Agreed. Except when the band needs perfect time to sync with some live synth arps or something. Otherwise just find a drummer that makes you sound good and then trust him to keep time.
@@Pandamasqueyea or they play like ‘straight’ with no variation and lack of tempo changes. I think there’s a lack of originally especially in drumming these days because of the dumb grid. Jimmy Chamberlain called these imperfections and what makes music interesting ‘inconsistency’ when he was talking to Rick. Musicians today are so self conscious because of the fear of being recorded on a smartphone an “off day” performance. Live is different of course but in the studio I don’t like when all the drums and cymbals are miked up. You gotta allow for natural transients and learn how to place acoustically in a room IMHO
Courtney Barnett is brilliant. Great songwriter, lyricist, guitarist, performer.
Her colab with Kurt Vile is one of my favorite albums of the recent years.
Anything she is involved with is a great !
Love all your stuff Rick, especially the stuff that helps me find new music to listen to! I know they're out there but sometimes it's just so hard to navigate the waters of "pop" music to find the good stuff.
Love this Rick! Got some of my friends on here!
Boygenius is brilliant. Can't wait to hear what they do next. So much talent and extraordinary voices.
Good explanation of indie rock. I've tried to explain it to my friends who are stuck in the oldies (I'm 70), this may help.
Made my day Rick to hear/see you dig a lot of the artists that I listen to and attend their live shows. Alvvays are relatively new to me (maybe 18 months) but I just dig their 3 albums. Party Police is an absolute gem of a song that is a regular go to for me.
Great episode with wonderful songs.
Hah. I just commented on Rick’s last video that I was bummed he doesn’t highlight more lesser known bands. In my face I guess. More of this please Rick!
Well, he’s a seasoned music veteran with an academic background in jazz and classical, and his taste seem to gravitate more toward classic rock and 90s alternative, so I understand why he tends to focus in those areas. That makes it all the more pleasantly surprising when he goes on these little detours
I would love if he would check out some alternative music from other countries around the world. Great music is still being made everywhere and Rick is the perfect person to promote it.
What a great set of tunes!!! Right up my alley. Cheers, Rick!
Love it, thank you Rick!
More of indie please! I subscribed today!
Love this video. A great selection for people to get curious about and tumble down a rabbit hole.
THANK YOU so much Rick for highlighting some of the fantastic music being made these day that are buried beneath corporate and commercial streams.
Absolutely.
So good to see you digging into different genres Rick, there is so much good music out there. You just won’t find it on the Spotify charts. 😊 Love St Vincent and The Bouys from Australia are well worth checking out too.
Music Man, I love your insightful observations about what makes indie INDIE! Very educational…
Interesting artists! I wouldn't say I'm an "indie rock" guy, but I've always loved that kind of vibe you're describing, and I like that you're recommending these bands and singers, because I would've never find out about them if not for videos like these (I don't follow Spotify recommendations, I tend to follow and listen artists that I already know from before, so I don't have many "newer" artists on my listening experiences). I will definitely be checking some of these out, so thank you!
I hope you start doing more indie stuff in the future, there are so many gems in indie, coming from an indie nut myself
I've been waiting a long time for you to finally get around to discussing indie music, and look forward to seeing much more. This is also a great way to talk about modern guitar music (because you won't find a lot of guitar in modern pop music on major labels - as you know from the Spotify top tens). Indie is also short for independent, meaning independent record labels. A lot of these artists are on small labels, that's partly why the songs aren't overly produced, but talking about the production is nevertheless really interesting. You could talk about Steve Albini for instance. Really look forward to more of this content.
Lot of these bands are influenced by 2 guitar bands like VU and television. I’d like to see guitar related content about that style. Enough with Sting lol
Appreciate you spotlighting female artists, Rick!
Great list! I would also check out Warpaint, School of Seven Bells, Beach House, Chelsea Wolfe, Lykke Li, Phantogram, Zola Jesus, Savages, Juana Molina, Bat for Lashes and Glasser.
Great suggestions! I’m familiar with all those artists but Juana Molina.
Wow, great list!
Great selection of artists Rick! Also, check out some early Warpaint.
great list rick....another band i'm 100% sure you'd enjoy is The Mysterines. by far the best straight up rock band in the uk at the moment IMO
i've been waiting for this video from you for ages, thank you
Love to see my music preferences being validated by Mr Beato 😅
That's exactly what I thought
Modern rock can be great
Black Country New Road for example
lol!!
Great episode! Wolf Alice’s diverse and melodic catalog don’t get talked about enough, & Phoebe Bridgers and St Vincent are great too!
Wolf Alice is the perfect band
Excellent video. Back to the Top 10 [insert category here]. Excellent.
The Regrettes, Slothrust and Ex Hex are my go to along with The Surferjets
Thank you for sharing these " new to me " artists.
one of my most favorite vids in a while please more indie rock or indie music in general!
I’ve heard three of these. Will definitely be checking out some of the rest. Thank you! 🙏
Great picks and definitely some of my favorites! I would add Neko Case too🎸
I would love a whole video on Neko
One of my female friends introduced me to her solo stuff and it’s great! So different than what I was familiar with, which was her work in the band New Pornographers. Also an indie essential
I keep forgetting her name for some reason... and have look up "My Uncle's Navy", which i don't forget and then find her again.
I’ve been listening to these artists on BBC 6Music. They plays tons of independent music from woman from the 1920’s to the present. You’ll find true treasures on that station. Really happy you shared these artist to us!
BBC 6 Music is amazing. A must for any true indie rock fan! Yes great female artists…and they play laddish stuff too. You get the whole vibe. 😂
I agree 100% BBC Radio 6 (available globally) is one of the best stations for new and interesting music.
YES!!! I love the BBC sound App.
Im born and raised in Hollywood,CA. From 79 to the present. We use to have great radio stations and amazing DJs that had personality. By 2002 I was over programmed radio from clear channel and now iHeart. I ventured online and saw I could stream Radio1 back in 2006. In a few months later I found 6Music. If you listen to the Huey Show on 6Music. That’s what US radio sounded like. A melting pot of goodies. I love listening to Sounds of the 60s w/Tony Blackburn on radio2. We have station K-Earth 101 that had the same vibe and DJs like him growing up. Grant Scott’s Vinyl Collection on radio Scotland. Love the pops crackles when he spins the tunes.
I like that Rick Beato has been giving us the top 10 on Spotify. But this list on indie rock women is where he needs to go. More Guitar based bands/artists to showcase, if he wants to and has the time.
I just listened to Angel Olsen yesterday. That album is so well produced and played...
Iggy Pop’s selection is always good value on 6 Music. I listen to 6 a lot because it’s the only mainstream station that plays new and interesting stuff. We don’t have John Peel any more but 6 Music is keeping some of that spirit going. It does annoy me a bit sometimes though because they also play a lot of quite dull indie wank that is trying too hard to be quirky.
Love this! One of the best episodes x
Great video! You should make more videos like this, recommending relatively new musicians who aren't as present in the mainstream. There's a lot of good rock stuff coming out... and your channel is big, it helps a lot to give visibility to these musicians.
I would add Waxahatchee. I just saw her a couple if weeks ago, and as good as her last two albums are, the live versions are amazing.
I just saw her too. It was amazing!
Great, could fit into the expansive definition of indie that Rick has here
NICE ❤
I saw Wolf Alice open for somebody a few years ago. I want to say it was QOTSA. I had never heard of that band before, but after that show I was looking them up at home. I can dig all of the bands you featured here
Love Wolf Alice…. So happy to see you mention them.
Thank you, Rick. I loved this.
Need more of this! There's so much great singer-songwriter indie rock right now and throughout the years that Beato rarely mentions. Deserves more coverage!
He could do a whole series on Elliot Smith alone. That guy is one of the most underrated music geniuses out there. Sure, he has a big cult following, and his fans are devout… But so many people aren’t familiar with him and how technically amazing he was at just about every instrument
so true! I love Rick's vids and watch them all the time. been waiting for a while to hear him cover a list of songs/artists that I actually would listen to.
Loving the love of several artists I knew already (Alvvays, Courtney Barnett, Boy Genius, Big Thief, Haim...) and looking forward to checking out some new ones I'm meeting here!
I'd also throw female-fronted Ratboys into the mix, and Horsegirl (shoe-gazey/indie).
Rick I learn so much from your channel It's ridiculous the amount of gratitude I have for you man.
Ótimo conteúdo!! Thank you, Rick!
OK, I got really into female fronted indie rock in the early aughts: Rilo Kiley, Sleater Kinney, The New Pornographers, Aimee Mann, the Joy Formidable, and a local Bay Area band called Glitter Mini 9, along with some others I'm no remembering right now. It was quite a turn for my listening habits, which had previously trended toward prog and hard rock.
From like 98 through 2008 was the golden age of indie rock in my opinion. So many amazing bands and albums came out of that scene
Great video, Rick! You should add The Beths to your repertoire as well. Great indie rock band from New Zealand.
He has mentioned them once. Love The Beths.
I’ve been obsessed with The Beths for about the last year. “Silence Is Golden” totally kicks ass. “Expert In A Dying Field “ is an excellent song.
Nice, I've been hoping you would do a few videos showing off some of the great modern indie stuff that's out there. We all have our issues with pop, but it's nice to see what's under the surface...
Absolutely. It probably doesn't get as many views and comments but I'd rather praise the good than dwell on the bad.
And mostly all the music I listen to is indie/alternative/underground.
This is a great top 10 kind of video! Waiting for the next one.
Better video than the Spotify top 10's. Do more of these, Rick..
Great video Rick. People always ask where the good music went. It didnt go anywhere, people just arent paying for it anymore! Take a listen to Men I Trust and tell me its not good music
Love all of them, awesome compilation
Great video! Lots of cool music so well done should be more popular
I am so cool and feeling so proud of myself and Prof. Beato! I knew 8 of the 10 bands and recommendations!
9/10 here. Stoked for the comments though with several interesting deeper cuts.
My favs is Wolf Alice.@@robgriffin4801
Damn Rick, have you been digging through my record collection!
All great picks!
Dan
if anyone's interested, here are some i'd recommend
1. Chelsea Wolfe - Apokalypsis
2. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
3. Joan As Police Woman - first two albums
4. Jessica Pratt - all of it
5. Mitski - ...
MITSKI. ❤
Haim’s song was my favourite from this list. Will listen to more of their stuff for sure.
Awesome video Rick.
Great choice on Jenny Lewis! She is amazing! Courtney Barnett is awesome too. Nice to hear about some of these other artists I haven't really much ;-)
