First off, using MY electricity to complete work or renovations you are having done is wild! Unless they were going to knock it off the rent, they definitely wouldn't have used my power. Secondly, entering my home without my permission or reasonable notice (whatever the law in that state requires) is absolutely unacceptable! The defendants didn't deny it, so I'm going to assume it's true. The plaintiffs certainly jumped the gun in regards to getting a pet. The adoption agency likely wouldn't have approved it without the landlord's consent, but them knowingly attempting to get the dog before receiving approval from the landlord was just stupid and a bit entitled. They, for a fact, knew they needed permission. I 1000% believe they read every single word in their lease, especially to confirm their clause to get out the lease was in there. I also 100% believe the mother in law was already fuming by the time they reached the defendant's home. She had every right to be angry about them refusing to do the walk through or return their deposit. However, you can't just aggressively show up to someone's doorstep and think things are going to work out positively. Depending on what state you try that in, it could be a death wish. Even though I believe the defendants are jerks and kickstarted the drama, the plaintiffs acted in anger instead of logic. They should have just filed the claim, just as they ended up doing anyway.

That's not what the security deposit is for. It's there for repairs, and if there aren't repairs needed, the landlord sends it back. Only time it can really be used for last month's rent, is with agreement from the landlord.
