My 8th grade social studies teacher did a similar thing but with map making, to demonstrate how important it was to be all specific about making maps way back when. We had to draw the class room and then write out instructions on how to get from the doorway to her desk. She would either over exaggerate steps and have an very large stride or she would under exaggerate it and move as little as possible. It was supposed to be a “fun” warm up, but it was more frustrating and annoying than fun.
