For me personally, every game game we play changes us, shapes us, even if this effect seems minimal. Still, there are some games that shaped my core values and other games that helped me during dark times. Some of them did both things. These are the best games ever for me.
The first is Fallout 3, actually, paired with New Vegas. Bleak, gritty and grounded atmosphere really got me invested, while amazing characters and deep, meaningful themes made me think like never before. And Lonesome Road DLC simply left me speechless.
Second one is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Its complex message helped me survive through a tough time, rediscover my values and find my place in life. The game is simply a must, I never expected such depth from it.
The next one is Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. This game is a Masterpiece, it's brilliantly crafted and delivered. The atmosphere of loneliness and insanity is so good it's frightening. The immersion is so strong I actually felt Senua's struggles and pain as if I were her. And the story is so heartbreaking, but so uplifting at the same time. Honestly, I struggled to find a game that evoked similar feelings for almost a year.
Then some really bad stuff happened to me and I lost almost everything and everyone, nearly even losing myself. I was devastated, but then I found a gem. It's called The Banner Saga. The whole trilogy is some of the best experiences gaming has to offer. The looks are gorgeous, the story is rich and deep, the gameplay is highly challenging, the music is magnificent, the characters are compelling, the losses are brutal, the pain is immense. This game told me to never stop, to always move forward, even if all hope is lost. And I overcame everything because I learned this lesson. I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone. Try it out. It's really that good.
Thinking now, there is a clear pattern here. For some reason, the games that helped me get out of severe depression are those about deep pain and suffering.
Lonesome Road has Ulysses, extremely traumatized by the destruction of the only thing he could call home.
MGR has Raiden doubting his ideals and mentally snapping in a terrifying world ruled by PMCs.
Hellblade teared my heart apart because of what poor Senua had to endure. For some reason I related with her so much I felt that I became her, that I fought those nightmarish norsemen and gods that took everything from me.
And The Banner Saga Trilogy made me much more mature, jaded but more self-conscious, more ruthless, determined and decisive. It tought me to never give up, even if you lost every person that was close to you. It tought me to live with the consequences of my actions, not escaping or denying them, but accepting them and moving forward. There's always hope. And our fate lies in our hands.
The most important message from this games for me is that we must not pray to some external forces to help us or wait for better times. There won't be any better times if we don't make them ourselves. The Gods are long dead. Instead, we must rely only on ourselves, we must shape our life and destiny with our actions. There's always a future, always a choice. We must let go and move on, move forward, always. These games fundamentally changed me, and I advise everybody to give them a try.

Since you asked, Borderlands 1 had an effect on me. From the gritty environment, hopeless feel, and sad characters like all the clap traps. Yet nobody gave up, fighting against the darkness every day in such a horrible place. It spoke to my defiance, and to never let the horrible things that have happened eat my character. I remember always wanting it on the 360, something about it called to me. I memorized that opening trailer of Marcus monologing. But I wouldn't get it till years later. Games like it and metro, a dark tunnel with the light at the end, where despite all the reasons to, hope was never abandoned. But that's just me.

I started out on Halo Reach. It opened me up to the gaming world. But one game that got me was Mad Max. I don’t know how it became such a comfort game for me. I beat it 100% three times over since it came out. But I knew when I went back to it I wasn’t mentally doing well. Now I avoid it like the plague for some reason. The Dark Souls series took its place as my comfort games (besides the basics like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series). I’ve never really had many friends growing up and keeping connections is difficult. The souls series told me to keep going, even when I tried to stop the cycle… we aren’t branded with the dark sign. But we do have the curse to persist on.

i think games can only introduce you to some ideas and nothing more but what happens afterwards is interesting to say the least

Single Player games have not had that much of an effect on shaping my personality or psyche but multiplayer games most certainly have. To be sure its perfectly normal for things like the games you play to shape your personality or psyche as everything from playing solitaire to football can do that. Anyway the biggest impact on me came from Multiplayer games. I started playing online in the early days with games called M.U.Ds which are text only online games and worked my way up from there. I learned that there were people that were able to make top tier characters that would crush a normal character, they did this through means of making a friend group that focused on sharing secrets only with each other and also lying to outsiders to confuse normal people so I was never able to compete with them so because of that I had no choice but to keep making stealth characters if I wanted to survive so that has shaped my personality ever since.

Dark Forces definitely. It sparked a life long love of Star Wars that only Disney could dampen.

Fallout 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Pokémon
These were the 3 most influential games from my childhood, I played a lot more, but these are the ones that had an impact on me
Fallout 3 got me into the Fallout series, and I have been so thankful for that
I credit Arkham Asylum for really getting me into the world of Batman, which has taught me a lot over the years, mainly the strength of willpower and hope
And Pokémon, likely being the first real video game I played, has morphed into an obsession that will stick with me for the rest of my life
I'd also say all these games had a hand in my creative spirit, as these three encouraged creativity in their gameplay
But no game has been more influential to me, despite it being a lot more recent than the others
    Undertale
    Cliche, I know
But this game is the reason I am who I am today, my humor, my drawing ability, and of course my identity

Games that have helped me was Max Payne 3 and fallout 76 as of recently, Max Payne was a crutch for me during a time where this girl had used me and just took so much mentally out of me I wanted to be there for her do anything for her and realized she had used me to boost herself and playing that game realized that life is unpredictable and it's always best to live your life leaving your pain or I guess *Payne* in the past
Fallout 76 helped me with just in general relaxing after tons of things happened in my life with family work and life in general just helps especially while building camps just help me take a load off

Honestly? World of Warcraft and Skyrim. Those two have always been comforting and safe worlds that I can go back to whenever I’m feeling utterly garbage today. They taught me the joys of fantasy settings, as well as how fun roleplaying is, which has helped my mental health immensely in the last few years what with playing DnD and Baldur’s Gate 3. The sense of community and likeminded people that I found playing wow also really helped me. Some of the people I met playing years ago are still friends with me today, and I think that’s really special if you can become friends with someone over a completely online space like a video game. Thanks for making this video, it helped remind me that games can really do some good.

I grew up on Fable and Dungeon Siege, both of which fundamentally shaped my perception of what fantasy settings should feel like.
But funnily enough, my first time playing New Vegas helped me through a really dark patch in my teenage years where my home life was falling apart, I went through the first serious breakup of my life, and I had dropped out of school with full intention of offing myself before the next new year.
    Heartaches by the number.
((I would be very excited for you to cover Dungeon Siege one day))

Morrowind really awakend creativity and escapism in me. It was the firt time I felt like games can be more than mindless fun.
Jedi Knight 3 - gave me community and friends when I was bullied and depressed.
KotOR and Mass Effect - really cemented that games can be art and they really impacted me as a person.

My first rpg’s were X-men legends, ultimate alliance, and Fate. Fate really taught me the definition of what an rpg is and how it works, rpg’s are still one of my favorite genres of all time and it’s part of the many reasons why I got into Skyrim and fallout 3, fallout 3 really got me into post apocalyptic media and the fallout franchise in general.
