    love how 8 hours of learning this as school does nothing and one 10 min vid makes me understand instantly

      Sometimes teachers cannot quite explain it so the brain understands I understand how that feels, always ask tutors or PAs for help when needing a hand and consult 10min videos.

    Something not stressed enough...
    4(a-b) you can distribute the 4
    3-4(a-b) you can distribute the 4 because multiply before divide.
    5*4(a-b) you have to distribute 20 from the 5*4 not just the 4, because that multiplication is on the left and comes first.
    So...
    5*4(a-b) = 20(a-b) = 20a-20b
    not
    5*4(a-b) = 5*4a-4b =20a-4b
    Due to practice problems, like the ones used here, there is a common misconception that the 4 is part of the () themselves.
    It is not.
    Teachers do not stress that enough because they fail to include problems with operations outside the () as well as inside.

    • @mathonify
      @mathonify  Год назад

      I understand your point however we usually write algebraic expressions to avoid any confusion. I prefer to encourage writing expressions correctly. There is almost never a reason to write 5*4(a+b) or anything of that kind. Of course if you are teaching order of operations those examples are instructive but they aren’t relevant to algebraic expressions once you learn how they are written.

    • @MrGreensweightHist
      @MrGreensweightHist Год назад

      @@mathonify The reason that the examples are need is they clear up all these controversies you see on line about problems like 6÷2(1+2) and 8÷2(2+2)
      They are relevant because, even if extremely rare, failure to cover them results in a false impression of how math works that becomes ingrained in the mind of the student.
      And when I said "Not stressed enough" I meant in general, not you in particular.
      A student should be able to walk away knowing...
      6÷2(1+2)
      6÷2(3)
      3(3)
      9
      And not mistakenly thinking
      6÷2(1+2)
      6÷2(3)
      6÷6
      1
