  • This new DIY Thunderbolt 3 enclosure for a m.2 2280 form factor SSD is well made, and worth considering for a small fast portable storage device. Not as fast as they imply with the labeling, but still a solid device worth considering.

(they don't seem to have this in their Amazon store yet)
As far as the USB enclosure from Sabrent, I can't seem to find it anymore. Not sure if it has been discontinued. I'll keep checking and if I find it I'll update.

I trust your thoughts with this. I like the OWC, but I needed some one to do a real review before I purchase one. Thanks again.

I'm not sure if it was visible when the product was released, but on their product page it lists "supports up to 1553MB/s real-world performance"

could be. I just know the box claims can’t be substantiated, it’s not 50% faster than other TB3 options. Still a solid device.

I just bought the OWC enclosure, they do say on their site up to 1500 MBps so why they say 50 percent faster than other thunderbolt 3 devices on the box is just weird and wrong. I think they meant to say USB 3.0. My Mac Pro 5,1 can only get up to 1500 MB per second because of the limits of pcie 2.0, via my Titan ridge card. I think they limit the speed to have it be cooler and more consistent read write speeds than other enclosures and it’s cheaper. I’m probably gonna just keep it not sure, but when I upgrade down the road to a new computer then this might not be the best choice.

4GB file tests are not enough alone to judge. You need to do random / write test over time with very small small and large files. Try copying 300GB back and forth. etc. I'd prefer cooler consistent performance.

Possibly,. I was running two different transfer speed benchmarks (Black Magic and Aja) shows similar issues as it either heats up or the cache files fill up. I guess real world performance rally depends on the application, huge 8k apple ProRes files are certainly a lot different tan captures from even high resolution digital cameras like my Sony a7r4 or Fuji GFX 100.

Can you run this with the top off if you have something like a Seagate Firecuda 530 with heatsink? That SSD already has a heatsink on it and is too big to fit.

I can agree, OWC is not really speedy, I use a G-Drive T3 with 2.500 und an upgraded Samsung X5 with a Sandisc SSD, that runs 2600

That claims came from... China ;-))))
P.s.: there is no link in the description. Would be very helpful all 3 of them.

Well, I don't think China has anything to do with what a U.S. company decides to put on their packaging. But thanks for the heads up, not sure how I missed putting the links in there.
