    • @Eric-fb2wp
      @Eric-fb2wp 6 часов назад

      @@wolfgang4078you mean the 2 big name brand guitars became crazy expensive. Because there are now alot of great cheap budget priced guitar brands now that make great quality and great sounding guitars that rival the 2 big name brands as in Fender and Gibson. A few of these brands that are well liked and get great reviews most of the time are Harley benton,Firefly,IYV those are 3 well known great budget brands. I have a IYV LP-300 Emerald green Les Paul copy and it is sweet. The fit and finish is really good. The frets are sweet no fret sprout. Ive picked up some Epiphone les Pauls and Gibson Les Pauls at my local guitar center and my IYVs build quality is better. Sure the Pickups and electronics are better in the Gibson. But the IYV holds its own. Bonus part is that the IYV is so cheap that I could swap the pickups and electronics for brand name and still be way under the price of a epiphone. Only difference is il have a great feeling great quality with top notch electronics with extra cash in my pocket lol.

    Awesome review! I hate when amp reviews mask the sound with a bunch of pedals. This really gives us an idea of what the amp delivers.

    I bought both the 5watt and the 15Watt. $102 and $209 = $311 for both. They are an awesome way for a dad to have some great all-tube amps on a pitiful GAS budget. I’ve seen ppl swap the speakers very easily and get sounds that they liked better. I think they sound great as is.

      If you do anything to the 5W, I recommend the negative feedback mod. Just toss a switch across R22 to short the resistor. Easy peasy. Bit noisier, but the gain increases a bit and it adds some "presence." Can always put a 25-50k pot in series with the switch too, to dial in a certain quantity of negative feedback. Works much like the presence knob on other amps. I prefer it shorted out, sounds a bit more vintage tube-y. Of course, it's still a phenomenal amp in stock form too!

    • @robraaiii
      @robraaiii Год назад +3

      @@lllllllllllllllllllll1lll1 I’ve been enjoying the process of learning what tones can be dialed up from both amps. These are my 1st tube amps, so I’ve nothing to compare it to yet. I’m into the idea of adding a presence knob, but I know they can bite like an angry monkey, so I’m a little hesitant to reach inside without the necessary know-how to do so.
      Thanks for the tip 🤘🏻

    Bought this amp from monoprice about 7 years ago for $110 (US). Had all solid state amps at the time so wanted to try it. For the price (and even not the price) I really like it. Still play. Handy little amp that sounds good and built like a tank. But yeah, that stupid mirrored control backing....and they still do that. One other difference between this amp and the old one...the controls are on top on the old one I have. Behind the handle. Anyway, I liked it enough to buy the Stage right cab and amp (30 watt tube). For the money, just can't beat it. Except for the stupid mirror control face. I printed up my own and laid it over the top...flat black with white text. 1000% better!

    • @lllllllllllllllllllll1lll1
      @lllllllllllllllllllll1lll1 Год назад

      I agree with you there! I pulled the pots/switch/bulb/input jack when I did the negative feedback mod. Hit that control plate with a random orbital sander to give it a brushed (-esque) finish. Looks much better.

    • @leonarddaneman810

      Yep. You got to memorize all the knob functions . . . I had the 15W and UPS would always bust the speaker loose in shipping. I finally gave up and repaired the broken screw holes . . . you gotta have a hot glue gun to secure all the peeling Tolex too . . .
      My third try with the 15W had the A-Type speaker and hated it. The 80-70 had more chime . . . sold off the 15W for $180 . . . after upgrading all the tubes . . . total loss.
      Love the little 5W amp . . . just need to add a Reverb pedal.

    • @frankgeick3641
      @frankgeick3641 2 месяца назад

      The amp design is "Class A"; which is one of the first amp topologies. So in a sense it is "old". There are lots of advantages to class A, and one very big disadvantage: low output at high AC power requirements. Also, heat generation and resulting thermal reliability issues. If you can deal with the low power output, it's considered to be the best sounding circuit topology by many amp designers. I own the earlier 2016 Monoprice label version with 2 inputs ( high/low) which is a direct copy of the Tweed F1 Champ used by Eric Clapton and others.

    As I've posted elsewhere ... The bad news = horrible shrill tone when fed with single coil Tele or Strat to my old ears, but the build quality was overall pretty good (bought 2023). The Celestion "Super 8" speaker is the prime culprit for crappy tone as it severely lacks in bass response and thus the tone control is exceedingly treble shrill unless turned off/down fully counter clockwise (killing some treble, but not enuf). The good news = replaced the speaker for a Celestion 8/15 ($45) and retubed with JJ 6V6 & 12AX7 ($26), swapped the 100uf/450v filter cap with a 22uf/450v cap for $3 (the cap change duplicates most Fender small single ended amps) and holy moly, single coil tone heaven! The difference with these mods is nothing short of Amazing - no BS, no hype, no shilling - promise!

    It is very good that you have connected the guitar directly, if other devices are switched in between it is not possible to assess the pure amp, and that is what the test is about.

      1 watt will (usually) give you 90 dB, and then you'll get 1dB for every extra watt you have. That's just a rough guide, but yes, 5 watts (even 1) is loud enough to get everyone's attention.

    I have one of these and it sounds great! I like single coils through it best, but humbuckers sound good too. The Celestion speaker is decent, but it's not great. I upgraded to a Weber alnico and now I'm very pleased with the sound. Make sure you measure carefully twice if you are going to upgrade to a speaker with a larger magnet. The big magnet on the Weber barely clears the power tube, only about 1/4" to 3/8" of space, very tight but it worked out.

    It really emulates the Fender Champ well. Although! I think you may like a little 1watt amp I found. The Supro Delta king 8. You can get an open box price or even a demo for under $325. No reverb or Trem, but it is a blues and rock machine. I got the black with creme stripes. They have the blonde with black stripes and gold flakes. 8" speaker and it is absolutely inspiring! Think Led Zep, ZZ TOP, Chicago Blues, etc. It has a very great, and i do mean great sound with Telecasters. I literally put my Strat on the side to play my Telecaster! It LOVES the tele. It is just wow.

    I had a Fender Blues Deluxe Tweed reissue. It also had that mirrored finish control panel. I have bad eyes to begin with so trying to read the printing on a mirror in lowlights was quite the challenge. AND Fender put the writing so that you can read it when you are standing BEHIND the amp! 😮 ?

    My 10.5 year old daughter is a rocker...she's been listening to bands she's seen on my shirts lately like the misfits, the clash, nirvana, etc. And asking a bunch of questions. She's interested in guitar and I think I'm gonna get her this amp and the pink Harley Benton telecaster, because she's left handed and unfortunately there's no shorter scale left handed cool guitars. There's the mini strat but only comes in black in lefty. Squier is truly missing a whole demographic, even if they only released 50-100 lefties per model they release, that would at least help out and especially on the second hand market. The tele isn't short scale per se, but it's smaller body and thin neck will work well with her lanky arms and smaller hands!

    The 15watt is $190 shipped in the US right now and I am liking it better than my venerable 1995 Fender Deluxe 112 solid state. (Less noise and better low level dynamics).
    Might try a different driver in the box down the road but the stock speaker is decent.

    I got one of these about 6 months ago. Well built amp. I honestly don't know how this guy can sit right in front of it and play with it dimed. To my ears, this amp is pretty loud, even when I'm standing 10 feet away from it. I played mine for about 1/2 hour when I first unboxed it with both knobs cranked all the way up - to start to break in the speaker a little, and to make sure the tubes would at least survive the first 1/2 hour. Its a good amp, but I had to do some mods to mine. the electronics are all PCB, and mostly surface mount components, so its REALLY tricky to do any circuit mods - even if you're really good with a soldering iron and know what you're doing. But I found that mine had a bit too much high end and not nearly enough low end response (and its NOT the 8" speaker!). The amp sounds better on this video than it does in my living room. I find this amp to be VERY bright - annoyingly so. Mine sounds better now, but to detail the mods I did would take too much space here - and would really require a discussion at the schematic level. One thing I will note: the "1W/5W" switch on the front panel actually does NOT change the power or the output stage at all. What it does is reduce the gain of the first pre-amp stage on the "1W" setting. For the electronics geeks out there, I'll tell ya that the DC plate voltages designed into this thing are on the low end of the spectrum (around +300VDC for the 6V6 plates), so even the cheaper Chinese tubes should last a long time in this amp. All in all, for the money this amp is a steal.

      @@landonbailey very wise move! those amps DO sound really good plugged into a larger speaker, but I think the stock 8" Celestion sounds just fine too. I usually have mine with the push-button on the "1W" setting, and the volume is rarely past 3. at that setting it works pretty well with pedals and is still plenty loud enough for me.
      I own a real '58 tweed Princeton. while the two amps sound different, I honestly can't say that the vintage tweed Fender amp sounds any better than the Monoprice - just different.

      Mine is also pretty bright (pokey?). I'm nearing the end of my break-in period (20 hours), and it hasn't mellowed the way the 15 watt Stage right amp did. @@benbarckholtz8730 Not sure if my first reply got thru or not. YT comments has been acting weird with me lately. OK, here are my mods for this amp. on paper it doesn't look like much, but its tricky with this amp becasue of the surface mount pcb build. these changes will smooth out much of the spiky tonal quality of the amps frequency response.
      1) short C7. this capacitor is redundant. C6 already provides DC blocking, and C7 serves only to squash low frequencies into V1B.
      2) replace C20 (470pf) with 100pf. this is tricky. removing C20 is doable, but resoldering another surface mount cap there is VERY difficult. what I did was use a small radial lead disc cap and solered it directly to the volume pot leads. (no need for high voltage cap here - DC is already blocked - a 50V cap is good)
      3) R20/C12 must go. remove either of those components and that will do the trick. doing this turns the tone pot into a simple high-cut roll off (similar to old Fenders), and removes the hi-mid boost that comes in when the tone pot is dimed.
      Good Luck!

      @jeebusyaweirdo3733 Год назад +2

      Well, it’s really the voicing of the speaker at the same time. It definitely does a better job with the jensens that were designed to go in champs. A lot of classic loved tones were done on champs with an 8” speaker. I do however think it would fare better with a 10”

    • @jeebusyaweirdo3733
      @jeebusyaweirdo3733 Год назад +1

      I also want to add that it also depends on context. You usually see this amp style used in the studio opposed to live anyhow, but it makes sense in a studio context because you want a little more of a brighter and thinner tone when recording, it helps it sit in the mix better when it comes time to mix and master. Live is when you would want to consider a 1x10 or 1x12 to add in that extra depth that you would need to fill out your sound in a live context.
