Tying Dave Whitlock’s fox squirrel nymph is a thoughtful tribute to a legend of fly tying/fly fishing; thank you Davie.

Dave Whitlock is going to be missed. Amazing artist, fly tier and fly fisherman. I got the honor to meet Dave and talk to him at the Fly Fishing show here in the states.

I'm tying some of Dave's fly patterns this weekend, in memory of a fine man and fly tyer. I remember when this pattern came out. I tied a couple and caught fish right away. I learned a lot about tying from Dave's tying style as well. My first Arctic Grayling was caught on a yellow Whitlock's Woolly Worm. I had luck with the brown Whitlock's Woolly Worm as well. He will be missed! My own father is not expected to make the weekend, maybe he will meet him on a river there somewhere.

What a wonderful tribute to Dave Whitlock. I had the honor of sharing his table at the International Fly Tying Symposium banquet last year. A truly gracious and wonderful man.

Got to meet Dave at many fly Fishing shows going way back to the early 90's. Each time I bought one of his books he'd take time out to talk while he signed it and he always added a beautiful drawing. He gave so much to the sport and he will be sorely missed. A true gentleman. I found this video bc I was going to try to tie up some of his flies as a tribute so thank you for this - it was incredibly well done Mr. McPhail...- I've always enjoyed your channel - your work is much appreciated by all fly tiers.

RIP Dave, his dedication to the craft is inspirational. These nymphs need to get down fast in freestone streams where the fish are. The wire, copper or lead, is important to get this fly down quickly and can eliminate the need for awkward split shot.

Great video. I've watched most of your videos over the years and I still learn new tips. The way to check that the tail is tied is a good example. Thank you🤙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I tend to tie these instead of Guide's Choice Hare's Ears lately. I still like tying the GCHE but these are a little faster, look just as good, and work very very well. Thanks Davie, happy holidays from NY!

      Hi Keith,
English partridge is in my view the best as it has the most feathers and colour you will need to tye many flies..
      All the very best Davie..

Hopefully Google translate will help - Dave Whitlock passed away in November. Not Davie McPhail, but McPhail posted this as a tribute.
