Thank heavens and hallelujah: a PL8 video with real substance in it, as opposed to the many shallow overviews, done by others who seem to have minimal experience or understanding of the unique features of PhotoLab! I learned a lot from this, so thank you, and please do more like this.
Thanks for another great instructional video Chris. The new PL8 features are great (coming from PL6) even if non-Film-Pack-users are still missing luminosity masking. What I like about the tone picker is that if you click and hold it you can drag the cursor up and down to adjust.
Very nice, very thorough presentation - thanks. The loupe tool, Deep Prime XD2s, and hue masking capability are powerful additions in PL 8. I can hardly wait for black friday! I'll probably start a fee trial in a couple of weeks, which would give me familiarity with the new software. A quick question: do you use the spot weighted tool in DxO Smart Lighting? I've been finding it very useful in a number of cases, particularly in dappled light images captured in forest settings. I love your mountain image and what you did with it - you live in a nice part of the planet. Cheers, Alex
Thank you. Yes, I often use the spot weighted tool as means of protecting highlights in the image. It is quite a powerful tool once you start playing with it in different situations.
Very interesting video but I can't understand the logic of making adjustments before you set the colour profile? Until the colour profile tab is activated PhotoLab is using the default colour profile of Neutral Colour. As each colour profile introduces both colour and tonal adjustments, thus changing the histogram, I would have thought it logical to set this first?
Good point, thanks for raising it. This was an afterthought. I don’t always use Color profiles, it usually depends what the raw looks like. In this case it was logical to use the Canon profile as it added something to the image, but I don’t think that is always the case.
Do you know if the luminosity masking is included in PL8 without having to purchase the photo effects? I found it very frustrating it's not included in PL7 as I have zero interest in the photo effects. DXO Nik collection 7 has all the filters I need.
With Filmpack you not only get the luminosity mask but 4 Fine Contrast sliders .an overall Fine Contrast and the 3 tonal fine contrast highlights, midtones and shadows. The Fine contrast controls are extremely useful in PhotoLab.
@@chriswrightphotographs Fuji is about their simulations like Classic Chrome, Astia, Acros and more. Both LR and C1 have the posibility to change these in a easy way, but DxO not, only in a ekstra priced add on .
@@terjegronli142 I don't use Fuji, but from what I could find out the in camera simulation has zero effect on the RAW file and is only visible on the RAW thumbnail and jpeg (back of the camera view). The actual Film Sim data is encapsulated within the Fuji RAW file, but it needs a compatible color profile in the processing software to render it. DxO do not currently support this although there are plenty of fuji profiles available in FilmPack. Ricoh GR III cameras have a similar issue. Of course if you were to shoot in RAW + Jpeg, the exported jpeg would display the Film Sim characteristics.
Thanks for the video. when you film yourself editing I suggest you remove the other images from the lower part of the screen so we better see the edits. It is not useful for the viewer and make it much harder to appreciate what you do.
@@chriswrightphotographsOn Windows Ctrl-F9 open/closes the filmstrip, Command-F9 on the Mac? I'm trying to learn all the keyboard shortcuts, it speeds everything up in PL.

Thank you, that is great to hear. There will be many more to come!
Nicely done! Beautiful image.
Thank you!
Thank you for the walk-through of your work flow. It's quite helpful.
Thank you!

Thank you, and good tip about the tone picker!
thanks for uploading these videos, they have been really helpful for me in learning how to use the DXO PL!
Thanks for the positive feedback, I'm glad they are proving useful!
Lovely edit. You brought a lot of depth into the image
Thank you!

Sadly it is not included. You need FilmPack to activate those tools in PL. It is not ideal!
@@chriswrightphotographs Thanks Chris. I feel like this is the one area DXO let themselves down.

@@ianyorke2617 thank you
The Fuji film simulations is not there, so not useful if you use a Fujifilm.
What simulations are you missing? PL is primarily a RAW processor, so the presets are limited compared to FilmPack which is all about film simulation
