- One of the issues that has plagued Africa is that of kleptocrats who enrich themselves at the expense of their country’s development. From Mobutu in Zaire, to Omar Bongo in Gabon, this has proved to be an issue time and time again and today’s subject of this video, General Sani Abacha of Nigeria is no different.
According to the estimates cited by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Nigeria lost $400 billion to corruption between 1960 and 1999. Some of that can be traced back to the rule of the dictator General Sani Abacha, whom the Nigerian government, accused of looting more than $2.2 billion from state coffers when he ruled the country from 1993 until his death, apparently from a heart attack, in June 1998.
Corruption watchdog, Transparency International estimates he stole as much as $5bn of public money during that time.
Upon Abacha's death, his successor in office, General Abubakar, commissioned a probe into allegations of corruption levelled against Abacha. These investigations confirmed that Abacha and a handful of collaborators had diverted billions of US dollars in public funds into several local and overseas accounts and properties.
In this video we look at the life of General Sani Abacha and how he managed to swindle such large amounts of money from the country of Nigeria.

There are some errors on this video
1buhari overthrow Shehu Shagari. Not Sani Abacha,
2 Abacha is compared to Uganda Idi Amin Dada
God help Africa, this evil must not be repeated. Salute Nigeria! Love from Namibia🇳🇦🇳🇦🇳🇦
Thank you
This is brilliant and beautiful analysis 🇰🇪.

I love this channel! thank you for telling us the truth about africa I appreciate it 🙏🏾
please leave enough space on your Channel. you will soon have more than enough such content about Dictator Museveni of Uganda and his Goons! This Channel is a step in the right direction.
Babangida did not overthrow Shehu Shagari in 1983, it was general Buhari that was responsible for that coup.
The guy error on Nigeria history is too much
Babangida was one of the major coup plotters, buhari was a puppet thats why they removed him easily, even abacha has been a part of some the coups since the counter coup.
Did the multi-national companies pay back for all the irregular oil contracts they received from Abacha.
Probably not.
Merci de toujours nous informer
He did not construct any road. It was all lies. I am a Nigeria.
He did build roads and hospitals under his PTF programme.

Abacha did sir , go and verify
Sani Abacha did not overthrow Moshood Abiola as Abiola was never president. Sani Abacha asked Ernest Shonekan to resign. The election in which Abiola won that made in president was annulled by Babangida.
Abacha was a thug.
Compared to the other dictators Africa suffered from, he's not THAT bad.
He killed over 50k people
@@ajiloreephraim4472 I said "compared to other dictators Africa suffered from" 🙄
@@ajiloreephraim447250k wheres the proof?
Why do people focus on the late General Abacha, when Ibrahim Babangida has reported as having taken $7 billion. This is roughly 3 times more.
Corruption is why Africa is behind. People centered institutions are vital in order for the continent to move forward.
@G the corruption comes from the leadership. Corruption doesn’t happen unless people are involved
Abacha killed and stole, in equal measures. A fair minded man!
Perhaps "fair-minded," isn't quite the right word? Perhaps"consistent" is better?
Did you say 26-100km of road??? Or 25-100 THOUSAND Km??? Because, Texas builds 100km in a few days
Well if he at least improved economy I wouldn't call him extremly bad leader (neintier good tho) , I mean remember Mobutu Se Se Seko , dude literally admited that he did not build a single road during his 30 year regin , while taking with Rwanda President if I am not mistaken.
That's a fair point
Bad is bad , why compare. Different countries,at least compare with someone from the same country. Don’t try to sanitise evil .
@@irenemathambo4831 I'm not defending him , I'm saying he could be much worse.
@@Lucas_07-PL he was as bad as they come. Can’t be worse than that.Did you want him to eat people so you can call him bad???
In turn, he Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu Wa Za Banga embezzled a total of 9 billion US dollars which he had in secret bank accounts in Switzerland, France and Belgium : A wealth he never even enjoyed after his overthrow because all European countries(his former friends and allies) refused to grant him visas to Europe. This caused him to develop heart attack and high blood pressure that killed him. He deserved it because his corruption led to the death of many innocent Congolese children, women and men from treatable diseases as there were no proper hospitals and medicine and food.
Love your documentaries. Africa telling the African story. Great job.
There are certain history 'gems' on RUclips and this is one! Thank you Tatenda for an excellent channel. As a Zimbabwean I find these is tremendously informative videos.
Make una free Abacha abeg, whatever he stole back then has now become peanut compare to what democratically elected office holders are stealing today.
Inshort Abacha is amongst Nigeria's best presidents judging by his economic policies and rule of law.
Yeah
I've heard recent stories about human organ harvesting/trafficking cases in Nigeria, that can sometimes even involve high-ranking officials. This sounds terrifying, and I know it happens in a lot of countries, not just Nigeria, as regions worldwide go through economic difficulties and seek out new ways to make money. Do you think these huge financial thefts by politicians like Sani Abacha have had a direct impact on the organ harvesting problem in Nigeria specifically, by causing financial difficulty for residents? How long has the trade been going on there, and do you know if the current president is taking actions to fight against the problem? Thanks, and thank you for these informative videos.
Thats why he was poisioned.
'Reads the title'
*Bruh.*
Lol ikr
I love your accent, where are you from?
I'm taking a guess - Zimbabwe. Tatenda means 'Thank you' in chiShona.
I live in South Africa and I worry after watching other leaders can just control the army, I wonder if our army is capable of a coup
Your army is already under white supremacy, modern apartheid occult coup. Your black présidents are just cover up, that is why the whites and asians have better lives in SA than black SA.
Mugabe, Jacob zuma did the same
De klerk and his 30 ministers stole billions,, please do a post .
So did Mobutu and Nguema.
Shocking. What Is The Point Of Coming To Power?
I believe to steal
2.2billion ressons right there, sadly.
Correction.
The Elections in Nigeria with Abiola was annulled and an Interim Government was put in place. It was the Interim National Government that was ousted by Abacha.
Sani Abacha is an ITT(International Thief Thief) memeber
How do leaders pilfer their country's natural wealth?
IT'S THEIR JUST REWARD BY THEIR BANKSTER BOSSES FOR ALLOWING THE PILFERING OF THE COUNTRY'S RESOURCES.
One-party rule and wholesale industry-nationalization?
No. It's because no one born in Nigeria knows how to do it an European/Asian firms are paying the government for the rights to do this. The government just keeps it.
@@NoahBodze prove it.
Yet in Abuja there is infrastructure named after this thief. A criminal who died in disgrace.
Hmmmm you guys why are you not Mention the great looters???
Everybody has a bad side
It is the same old n" ongoing story of lack of democracy.
Today, in 2024, we have the Sani Abacha of Ethiopia in PM Abiy Ahmed. In addition to the sadistic way in Tigray, he is essentially selling the country’s infrastructure and industry such as The Railways, the Telecom, Airlines, factories of all kinds across the nation. Buying big guns at the cost of the nation and sell them to Sudan and Somalia opposition parties. Now he and his hooligan friends are being called as the “Dollar Tirasu!”, English meaning their pillows are literally Dollars 💵! They make big decisions with a new law and flip it back when it’s sweet to them. The nation is literally getting into the ditch by man-made problems.
Wait, 5 billion out of 400 billion? Who was the most corrupt leader in Nigeria, then?
The 400 billion is the total of ALL corrupt officials combined, not just the President.
It is major- gen Tunde who kicked shagari in 1983
Dissolver in Chief!
We need just men like Abacha to handle Africa
Fuck this. The greatest heist is still happening. And it's Ali Buba and the 40 theives
So many errors in this video.
1. It was not Babangida that overthrew Shagari, he was just one of the conspirators.
2. Abacha was never second-in-command to Babangida. Babangida's first deputy was Ebitu Ukiwe, who was later replaced by Augustus Aikhomu.
3. General Yar'adua was arrested (and later murdered) by Abacha in 1995 together with General Obasanjo, not in 1997.
4. General Oladipo Diya (Abacha's second-in-command) was arrested in 1997, not in 1995.
Shame!
Here’s a good rule? No person with army involvement is ever allowed to rule? Have to do something for gods sake...no wonder you’re all poverty stricken all the time?😳
I don't have time for this so called people all I have to say is that God Almighty will fight for the poor
He's doing a shit job so far

Its babangida, and please do your research well before spreading this misinformation.
Its a lie
I don't know you ,but this man sani abaca is ,and I mean it when I say is one of the best people Nigeria ever had, you liars. May his soul rest in peace ameen
