      from what I recall, PF was a great psychedelic band that really didn't sound that great on psychedelics. The Beatles, on the other hand were great. Better still, Brian Eno, especially on the Hero's album.

      Kaladin Stormblessed he didnt actually die from lsd but his abuse of it did make him a recluse in which he remained til the time of his death. I believe he even had a 3 day binge (which is v unusual for most psych enthusiasts) w a gf before he made his solo album ‘The Madcap Laughs(1970)’ but it wasnt til after that he locked himself up from the world til the age of 60 when he died as a recluse in Cambridge.

      I like this album but I don't understand why it's such a cultural phenomenan. Pretty much everybody and their grandmothers have Dark Side on their playlist, even the non-progressive rock music fans. Personally, I thought Wish you Were Here was a better album over all.

    • @NoN4m3161
      @NoN4m3161 7 лет назад +19

      It was innovative for its time. The bands use of the mini moog, other various instruments and instrumentation set the album and band apart from everyone else. People still claim that if the album was released today, it would still be as relevant as it was for its time and have the same impact.

      I'll be honest with you that I tried listening to some tracks from Pink floyd before my experimentation with drugs and it didn't really appeal to my ears. After sophmore and junior year though drugs opened my mind into this new state of consciousness about the world and since then listening to pink floyd made them be my favorite band. I guess some people already see the world and music in a unique way such as you do Daniel and then some others need some sort of way to open their mind to new things such as I have

    Overrated? Nah. Overplayed? I guess. It's that good it makes you listen over and over again until it gets old, but by then you've discovered Wish You Were Here, Meddle, Piper, Animals, etc. that it's no big deal.
    I discovered DSOTM like many fans do, around their early high school years. Of course I've heard of it and recognized the iconic album artwork, but there was nothing like listening to Pink Floyd for the first time. They're now my favorite band by a mile, and I only wish I could have seen them in concert.

It's probably the single strongest channel I've ever come across - theme wise. When I was young I disliked Pink Floyd, whenever it came on the radio I'd detest it. Now, what can I say, I love it. Musically it just clicks with me. I don't really know how the transition happened, but it did. Every single song has a "theme", mostly the things every single individual has experienced or has concerns about. The album starts with a genuine heartbeat, as if you were inside the album waiting for the music to start, as Speak to Me gradually transitions into Breathe, a gentle, relaxing song on not rushing into anything enjoying and feeling the life we have around us, the air, the nature, etc. That it's your choice the way you live your life because in the present you think you have time to live "long you live and high you fly", but as time passes you"ll realize no matter what you're just another human being and life isn't really as magical as we think it actually is "All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be". After the realization of this you get "scared" or try to escape the reality, and the second song On the Run is literally the action of escaping, the whole struggle of trying escape, and if you closely listen until the end of the song with headphones you can hear the running steps go back and forth, because you'll notice that there is no escape, there is no place you can go to to escape life and reality. And then the ringing clock, ringing as if your time was up, the third song Time, the lyrics poetically expressing what we are always told by older people, but we will only feel it with experience. Time is short, there are going to be days were you don't care about time, there's nothing to do, there is "time to kill today", but you shouldn't take that for granted because after a while even the if "the sun is the same in a relative way" you'll will eventually get older and be "one day closer to death". And as time keeps ticking and you're closer to death, the 5th song comes up, The Great Gig in the Sky. A beautiful depiction using no lyrics at all other than the questions Richard Wright (r.i.p) says to himself at the beginning, with powerful vocals expressing death. The first part of the vocals express the fear, the pain we might have in dying, but as we realize we shouldn't be afraid of dying the vocals become more tender, softer as if we were embracing death. I won't explain more but for those people who think The Dark Side of the Moon is overrated or don't understand why it's so popular, read carefully this paragraph that I just wrote and just think about how just with 5 songs I was able to communicate such deep, powerful, real thoughts. And I haven't even talked about the sound, not only the lyrics but the sound as well, the emotional, amazing guitar played by Gilmour in most songs including those badass solos in Money, Time and Any Colour you Like. The fact that every single time Mason hits the drums it's perfect, there's not a hit too little or too many, the drums are perfect, especially the way he magically plays the drums to transition the songs (especially the transition from Us and the Them to Any Colour you like). The keyboard/piano throughout the entire album by Rick Wright, the piano in The Great Gig in the Sky... beautiful. Waters, the lyrics in every single song is perfect, a true poet, and plays the bass also perfectly in every song. This is why it's one of the best albums of all time (in any genre, not only rock)

    • @danithedorito
      @danithedorito 5 лет назад

      personally i think the first part of the vocals in great gig in the sky doesn't express fear, but the beauty. nonetheless this is an awesome writeup. thanks for writing that.

      On the run was originally meant to express the fear of flying, but it can also be interpret as a commentary on how fast time passes during mid age (the transition from an infant to an old man, from breathe to time). I particularly enjoy how it depicts cacophony of daily life, the helicopter sound, and also the explosion that "pops" our bubble of reality.

    Released 1/3/1973??
    In Jan 1970 I went back to Uni in Brighton ( England ) early for the second term and Floyd were playing The Dome concert venue (check it out) , as there weren't many students around I managed to get a couple of tickets. That evening I was expecting past work but they were trying out some new tracks for a future album, it was 'Dark Side of the Moon'. So the album was in gestation for some time.

    I certainly agree with commentors that Pink Floyd is incredible even whilst sober. I will say however that I've listened to Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals and The Wall at separate times under the effects of psychedelic drugs, namely LSD and psilocybin mushrooms. Don't think I'd ever trip again but all of these albums affected me in various deep and profound ways under the influence. It was genuinely undescribable, and I hate to get quasi-spiritual but it connected me to the music more and those isolated experiences still have an impact on the way I listen to their music to this day.

I got really scared, and tried listning to anything like Bob Marley, Dave Matthews, but it just made me more scared. So I tried DSOTM, and could relate to the fear of the album, and it really helped to comfort me.

    That's one of the best LP's of all time because it's adventurous, inventive and full of surprises. Instead of using the then-traditional mixdowns tracks were recorded and mixed such way they became sonically thought provoking. 'Time' is often studied by recording engineers even today. 'Money' is using an unusual time signature. The sound is replicated today by many bands. And so on. The whole work is a great concept album.

    Just to say, even though I am 67, I love your reviews. This one in particular is very funny. I know you are joking. But, obviously, there are millions of people who love this record and have never touched acid. I first heard Pink Floyd in 1967 so have followed them ever since. For people my age, Saucer Full of Secrets was *the ultimate* "psychedelic" recording from mid 1968 to early 1969. But by 1973, the Love Generation, Flower Power etc was dead and *darker* times were in full flow. The dream was over. There was a true sense of loss for those of us who lived through the"60s". Vietnam was still a nightmare, student unrest, ugly racism ruled, feminism was almost un-known. That is why this LP is so persistent. It reflected *those times* and still pertains to these nasty conditions which still exist today. For these reasons, it's more "timeless" than say, Sgt Peppers, which is more about a *moment in time* than about "universal" themes. And on top of this, on DSOTM, there are a lot of great "accessible" tunes which have great melodies. There is beautiful singing, the playing is spot on without being fiddley, the technology is used in the right way and the record itself represents the pinnacle of analogue recording which hit the heights right around this time. It *sounds* great. Peace.

    I have always had a fondness for The Final Cut actually, whereas most people think it was crap. Also really like Wish You Were Here and Animals, with The Wall close behind. The Japanese "Pro-Use" of Dark Side Of The Moon is the definitive pressing, on a system revealing enough to show it in all it's glory.
