I am surprised by the amount of people who are shocked that women were married off at 12-14. That was completely normal at the time and was still normal until the 1700’s. I’m also annoyed about how some people assume that this type of marriage only happens in Asia. It’s so offensive. European (white) girls would be married as early as age 9. Main reason is because most people died young.

The times were different , age of maturity and other factors were there as well. It’s not religious , it was happening in Rome and ancient Judaism as well. Not only in Christiandom but Judaism has even younger traditions in Old Testament. The age of maturity at that time was different than the age of physical and psychological maturity. At the time girls were women at age 10 but now times are different and age of maturity has changed.

The proper answer is “we don’t know “ , and we don’t know that the reason is not tell us because “it was she was if normal age”. We don’t know what is not tell to us , but we do know is not relevant. The Bible does not tell us what happened to Jospeh, does not tell us what happen to Jesus during his childhood , nor during his teenage years. Only when it’s relevant (the prophecy about his death or he talking with the scholars at the temple ) is mentioned. Did Jesus have more friends or just Lazaros family? We don’t know because was not important for the message. If Mary was too old to have a child we will have (more likely ) known about the fact. So we know she was not too young or not too old to need a miracle to have a child.

    • @rbnmnt3341

Vanda Saba, I can agree with that but... Mary was chosen, found favor from God. Scripture says we didn't choose God but he chose us. Stop and think about this for a minute. We are also special because scripture says we are his children and his friends and a royal priesthood. So special we are that God sent his son to die, for me and you and all of humanity. Our part is to confess with our mouth, believe in our heart that he is Lord and that God raised him from the dead. Some, especially Catholics, get carried away with Mary adoration. Their Mary, is not the Mary of the bible.

12 to 14 was the time of getting married at the age of puberty in older times. It is not know that age is just the norm. it well could have been older to 16-17 but that was somewhat older.

I am very interested in the question, and it makes me feel slightly uneasy. Here is my trail of thought, but I would be really keen to hear the views of others: If Christians are comfortable with the idea that God allowed for a 12-14 year old to become impregnated with a child, then they cannot make the claim that there is something inherently immoral about doing this. If these issues are cultural rather than natural, then the only Christian view would be that (consented) paedophilia is acceptable (or is only acceptable under the constraints of moderns, Western society).
I am in no way condemning religion, or Christians in general, and am merely taking this argument in the direction that it leads me. I welcome other people's thoughts

    • @kwameyeboah3026
      @kwameyeboah3026 4 года назад +4

I generally believe time and space shapes world views...Paedophilia would not have been a relatable concept to them in that era because the child is "being prepared" for marriage at an early age and is not concern about education or future careers unlike it will be in the 21st century. Also, most of the grooms would have been the same age as them or a few years older with some exceptions though so their lives will be not be disrupted or the groom having an undue advantage over the bride unlike it will be in present-day situations. The Jews would rather have viewed it as teenage marriages, not Paedophilia due to their culture
Hope you understand my point with regards to the culture at that time...
NB: I do not condone Paedophilia and believe it should be illegal

2 questions - Matthew 13:55 refers to a later stage in Jesus' life, when he was a man. His closest followers would have been called brothers and sisters. Question No 2 - why did Jesus give his mother to John, at his crucifixion? In Jewish culture at that time, she would have been under the care of one of her other sons - if she had had them. By placing her in the care of John we know that, following Jesus' death, she would have had neither husband or son to look after her.

    • @lavenderhuman

in that time, life expectincy was much lower. Girls were married as soon as possible becaus of it. If they were married in their 20’s or 30’s (like most people today) they could not have had many children (wich was important because many of those children would not survive until adulthood).

I believe that all the people should read the stories in the Bible and the Quran, because these stories are not just "a bunch of stories" as some suggest, but actually they contain moral code, set of beliefs for people to follow. May Allah shed light on the hearts of those who make dirty allegations of Allah and the Prophets, particularly on social network sites.

Isn't it that the reference for Mary's "other children" or as scripture says it "brothers of Jesus" aren't exactly literal. It's because in the Hebrew text, their word for brother is also used for brother in law or cousin. In the New Testament, Jesus told us to call one another "brothers" in Matthew 23:8. The passage obviously does not mean to suggest that all Christians have the same physical mother.

  • @kittydreamz86

I'm hearing that girls were betrothed at 12 frequently, but not a lot of support for that fact. The only girl I've read described as specifically 12 (from the Talitha story) is called young girl, little girl, damsel, but even in Greek it's a totally different word than the one used for Mary, virgin, that is also used for all women of marriageable age. Salome (a jewish girl) is also called the same word for "little girl," korasion, and she is still living at home and not mentioned as betrothed.

  • @tybuzz67

Yeah when you go to Google search yes it has many results that says Mary was probably 12 to 14.
But I don't agree that Mary is 12 or 14. My opinion is that at least Mary was 16 years old.
    My reasons are:
    1. Physiology between girls 12 to 14 during Mary's time and now have no difference what's so ever. A lot of girls at that age are still lanky, boyish not fully developed yet. Granted there are girls who have a woman's body at an early age of 12 but not the majority of them. I used to work on a college with a High School level and every cases we have of pregnancy in High School are girls ages 16 and up and most of them in senior year. We do have a tiny percentage of 3rd year students who got pregnant but their ages are beyond 16. Year in and year out, I could see the vast difference with those girls who are 12-14 and girls who are 16-up. The former are so awkward physically and so childish but they get back from summer into their senior you could really see the difference how womanly they look. Again rare are girls who are already "women" looking in the first and year. Faculty sometimes bet who will be the best looking swan from the ugly ducklings from the seniors when summer is over.
    2. Jesus when he was twelve was still considered a child by Mary and Joseph. They were looking for him, BOTH OF THEM like they were looking for a child. Granted in early societies and nomadic societies today it is the age where the boy transitions to manhood -- this is the time when the 12 year olds learn the trade of livelihood BUT still considered not a man but is trained to learn TO BE A MAN. They are expected to help the father in the trade. Again they are still considered a child but is being readied for manhood responsibilities. The girls aren't as looked like that but do get trained to help the mothers in the home. Again the parents still considers them children. Because if Joseph and Mary considered at Jesus as young adults it would only take Joseph to look for him -- a father will have a talk with his son man to man.
    3. Related to this is David, who was still considered a child as he is still with his father but was already trained for manhood responsibilities in caring for the sheep. I think David was 14-15 years old when he fought Goliath.
But that is just my thoughts sir.
    Godbless you.

Both Matthew and Luke tell us that Mary gave birth to her firstborn son(Jesus) .No where do Matthew and Luke write that Mary did not give birth to no other children. In fact both tell us that Mary gave birth to 4 other sons and gave birth to daughters. As a former Roman Catholic who has been set free from the Vatican, I tell you the Popes are no more than Caesars and the Cardinals the modern Roman Senate. The Roman Empire did not totally disappear, it lives in the Roman Catholic Church.

I think it's a useless exercise to try to get all of the details out of the story. With every translation and iteration of the Bible comes changes with the grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure that just changes the meaning of each sentence just slightly. If you read it in order languages you'll notice that the it's all slightly different. I think that after the 1000th iteration, trying to extract details from a story told through a game of telephone is futal.

I have read the Bible many many times and years ago I noticed old women being referred to as " virgin" or "pure".....not only that these women were never far from their husbands .
A few weeks ago I was reading the Bible and there was another old virgin crying for the husband of her Youth . And I have come to understand that the Bible teaches that a woman who has been faithful in marriage never loses the title of virgin ....this is why marriage is holy . And is a sacrament of the Holy Roman church.
