Just wanted to say that even five years later, this video is super appreciated. I can’t believe this game has flown under my radar all this time. It looks incredible!
I was just about to type the same thing! Fantastic job Jon! this is the first explanation I have watched where I felt like I understood the game and its quite fluid and simple. Thanks!
Wow, what a playthrough! This is probably the best one so far. You made I so fun with your little thematic comments. Keep up the great work! I do think that the developer missed a trick in not making the reputation tokens just a six sided Victorian themed die.
I wasn’t interested in this game but when I saw your tutorial I thought it was very intriguing. You make any game intriguing and I have now added this to my wishlist! Great job as always!
Phenomenal runthrough of an awesome game! My copy just arrived in the mail this week, and I can hardly wait to get it to the table. Thank you SO much for extra effort you put into this video!
I appreciate your channel so much. When games have so much going on, I struggle to read from the rule book. A quick rules video is helpful, but a full playthrough like this really helps me understand and then teach these games. Thank you so much. I played this yesterday for the first time. I liked it, but it would have been a lot faster and easier if I had watched this video first. Next time I play will be even better now that I’ve seen this
As always, as close as can be with very different strategies. This wasn't on my radar at all, but my wife is a huge Downton Abbey fan and this seems like it could be a winner.
The best video I found on this game! It's been sitting on my shelf of shame for a while because I thought it was a more complex game than it really is, and I didn't think my 11 year old son who has grown up without a TV would really get the theme. Turns out he had a blast pairing guests for the various events.
Awesome as ever and I was surprised how close it was. Great to see the different strategies. I’ve played once and loved it and am teaching it with my unused to date copy this weekend. So thank you brilliant content as ever.
Jon, thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this video. It was absolutely fantastic. Although it was long, I did not really notice the time going by because I was very interested in what you were saying (e.g., the strategy considerations, etc.). You have a fantastic video "presence" (friendly, clear, and efficient) which makes your videos very enjoyable to watch. Keep up the great work.
GREAT playthrough. Long video, but absolutely worth watching the entire thing for the strategy discussion alone. Bonus that the ending was so close! I enjoyed it thanks a lot. I am ordering it next week :D
Good playthrough! This cleared up some small question for our playgroup. The decisions were interesting. I almost always go with Village Fair planning on my first turn. Our group likes the Jane Austen closed courtship variation. No one will try to hog up a certain group of buildings. Surprised that the family that did not hire any new servants did so well. Hiring more staff is something I do on my 2nd turn. If the Brushing Room or Underbutler tiles turn up; I try to get those right away.
I know that you did this video a while ago, but I hope Kayenta knows that their sponsorship was well used. I really liked how this looked, but now I'm really excited about it as you made it look really fun(and yeah, I got the Kickstarter for it). Thanks again!
This game looks fun. I'm not crazy about the theme or the title. I would love to see this re-themed somehow. Great video! Keep up the "reputable" work.
Hey Jon, hope you are doing allright! One of the things that come to mind when I watch how the game plays is that it seems to be rather satisfying. Moving up and around the 'reputation circle' (spend some gain some) as well as getting more prestigious guests to your hand and plan, invest and tableau build to, finally, invite them later on - it's a satisfying mix, or? (Also considering a little planning for servants and various objectives to score at the end of the game, though scoring seems to be a bit random based on drawn guests and objectives.) I would have never thought that the theme or the art of the game would make me feel inclined to get this - but it seems to have the right balance of finding ways to make money to afford stuff and it's tight enough (and a little unpredictable) to still burn the brain a little - without being too restrictive. (It's been a topic of conversation recently - when is a game too tight with resources to be a lot of fun to plan with, and when a little too loose. Obsession seems to be in the middle of the spectrum here?). Feedback is much appreciated. Thank you so much!
Sorry for the delay in replying to you here Tim. I found the cycle of the game satisfying, and it is certainly crunchier than it may at first appear. I was initially interested in the theme largely due to enjoying the show Downton Abbey, but without that I would likely have been coming at it from your perspective.
Thanks for that detailed run of the game. I just got my copy and I’m looking for advice. For my first play attempt, do you suggest that I try to play it like you did, but with two players, not three or should I try the solo variant? Which is the better way to learn? Thanks in advance.
I was always put off this game because of the boring looking art work on the box and the theme wasn’t appealing but your detailed play through has changed my mind and made me want to buy the game !
This game seems pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, I'm 50 minutes into the video and have yet to see what happens when you pass. Seems like it would be worth discussing that at the start of the video given how long it takes to get there organically.
The D20 is mostly used for the solitaire game, and I suppose it made sense to reuse it for the Charles Dickens variant instead of putting another die in the box.

I just got it for Xmas. Can’t wait to play using this play thru.
Funny coincidence, same here 😂
Man, you've been playing some seriously interesting games on your channel since the review-less change and I'm loving it. Keep up the awesome work!
Totally agree! Keep up the great work Jon! :)
Thanks Jon! Its always nice that you take the time and zoom in so that we can read and understand everything!
I'm glad you enjoyed that :)

I just ordered this game on Saturday as a V-Day present for my wife. I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for the playthrough!
Thank you so much for this clear and thorough play-through! Now I feel confident enough in all of the moving parts to tackle the solo mode.
Thank you for a fantastic play through with very clear explanations!
Phenomenal runthrough of an awesome game! My copy just arrived in the mail this week, and I can hardly wait to get it to the table. Thank you SO much for extra effort you put into this video!
No problem, I hope the playthrough ended up helping you out with playing it :)
Wow! What a fantastic playthrough! Many thanks for this great Video!
This video was amazing and cleared up all my frustrations in learning how to play - thank you, Jon!!
I'm so glad it helped!
I don't have the game but would love to play it. Thank you for your videos so that I can 'play' vicariously until I take the leap!

That's so great to hear!
I really enjoyed watching this from start to finish, great vid as always!
Awesome, that's so great to hear :)

Thank you so much for this excellent video. The game is now on my want to buy list.
Just bought this game. Great playthrough. Thanks.
I love watching your game play videos. Thanks again!

Awesome playthrough, Jon, as always. I was going through the rulebook, but was too tired and learnt the game here. Cheers 😉
Really helpful tutorial / playthrough, thank you!

It's always great to hear when a video really helps someone with a purchase decision, I hope you end up enjoying the game when you get to play it :)
Thanks!
Also nice nat 20
Thanks right back :)
Great play-thru!
Great playthrough! I just got the game and am excited to play it!
Great tutorial, Jon!
Lovely playthough that makes a busy game easier. In answer to posters below: KickStart was in 2020, and it is due to arrive in retail 2021
As usual a perfect video! Thanks for making such a perfect work!

Peaky Blinders Edition ...
LOL, Ms. Blowers! too funny!
I think it's pronounced so it rhymes with flowers,. Wouldn't mind meeting the one you know, though!

This play through was great minus the mispronunciation of Valet.
Probably one of the games I'm most excited to get. BTW, you sound a little hoarse, hope everything is ok.
There is so much randomness in this game, but gosh darn it, I think I want it :) Looks like a lot of fun
How you handle the random aspects is a big part of the fun. The reaction strategy is tremendous.
I don't know if this is new (2nd printing), but if you want to activate the Servants Hall you need to place a servant there.
Thank you 👍
Plantagent? Wonder if that's a misprint and they meant Plantagenet.
Yes, they did. How that one got through the many proof steps, I do not know, good catch; flagged for correction.
Have the rules changed. I read that each player gets Five objectives at start. Superb video. Thx
Thanks alot!

Unfortunately, it's been too long since I played this game to remember the rules enough to answer your question. Sorry about that!
Bought the game because of this video
Hope you enjoy it!
@@JonGetsGames it actually got lost in the mail, but will buy it (again) once I get refunded. Keep em comin
Oh no! Hopefully that gets turned around quickly for you.
Thank you for the great explanation. Where can i find the rules for this variation ?
I imagine you can find those rules on Boardgamegeek.com, there is a page specifically for Obsession.
Bravo 👏
Are there many differences compared to the 2.3 version that's been released?
I am unsure, sorry.
I was always put off this game because of the boring looking art work on the box and the theme wasn’t appealing but your detailed play through has changed my mind and made me want to buy the game !
Awesome, I hope you enjoy it!
Does the game include rolling dice? Or was the dice roll at the beginning just to determine the location?
I don't remember the specifics, but the main mechanics do not involve rolling dice.
Great play through! I believe it is pronounced Plan-taj-a-net not Plant-agent.
cant find it at cool stuff or miniature market, wondering when its coming out.
Looks like you can find information about acquiring a copy at their website here: www.kayentapublishing.com
Fantastic video, thanks! Now this is on BGA that might generate a few more views 🤓
oh cool! I didn't realize it was posted there.
Where can we find this game? Love the videos Jon!
You can still pre-order it here : www.kayentapublishing.com I do believe they have started shipping.
This game seems pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, I'm 50 minutes into the video and have yet to see what happens when you pass. Seems like it would be worth discussing that at the start of the video given how long it takes to get there organically.
Why not used a d4 instead of a d20?
The D20 is mostly used for the solitaire game, and I suppose it made sense to reuse it for the Charles Dickens variant instead of putting another die in the box.
Sorry I can't help myself, but valet is pronounced "val-LAY." :-)
Both are valid pronunciations, and the one I used is more in line with the time period of the game.
Fair enough!
Horace Watkins, the 19th century British pronunciation is Val-et.
Even with that knowledge, I still cringe every time I hear it!
You better not watch Kingsman then :)
I was interested, but now seeing it played...looks very boring and empty. Great tutorial and playthrough, though.
