BENDING Longtail Skeg aka Tuning a Longtail Mud Motor

  • Taking out the longtail mud motor and tuning it in. I was testing out the 8.5" prop on my jon boat and the prop kept jumping out of the water. One way to help fix this is by bending the skeg. I am no professional. Look at Swamp Runner's video listed below to do this or contact them about this if you feel uncomfortable doing this.
    If I looked back at the prop, it was jumping out of the wake on the port side (my left if I was facing forward) so I bent the skeg to fix that. If you are facing the rear of the boat with the longtail out over the water, most of the time the prop will be jumping out to the right. To correct this, you need to bend the tip of your skeg to the right (while you're looking at the front of the prop or looking at the longtail over the water from your transom)
    Most use a crescent wrench to bed the skeg. It takes some force, more than I thought, and I wouldn't think you'll break it. It meant to take a beating. Swamp Runner made a much better video on how to make your longtail mud motor run better - • SwampRunner Pro Staff ...

    Good video bro. Just remember, its easier to say "bend it toward the way that the prop tries to run"

    Great video on an adjustment that's often overlooked JT. Is this running the weedless prop? Changing to the weedless was one of the best things I've done to improve performance and handling. It's taken a beating that the standard props just wont take and reduced prop walk a lot. Thank you for the recommendation.

      Thank you River Rat! I normally run the weedless prop. It's my favorite prop. In this video, I was playing around with the 8.5" prop. I agree with you, I have taken some big hits with the weedless where I wouldn't think the standard prop would have help up

    I have a 670 on my 1436 I just ordered a 8.5 hurricane prop. I’m gonna say my weight distribution and you tell me if it’s to much weight over all as well. I know hurricane props are for light boats. So I have a untreated plywood floor in front. Light weight with on top a 55 pound battery, fuel tank with 4-5 gallons in it so 30 pounds safe to say. Then a crate with prop puller props fishing gear ext prob 7 pounds or so. Then me 170lbs in the back with the motor. It doesn’t swamp and I build the transom up for the weight so maybe 10 15 pounds of aluminum and steel back there total. Any advise or comparison is great. Thanks!

      As long as the boat sits flat, or has just a little bow rise, you should be good. If it's hard to handle, add more bow weight to see if it helps. I run the 8.5 hurricane with my 13hp on the 1436 as you see it in the videos. It sounds like the same weight as your rig minus the difference in the engine. If you think the boat will be too heavy for the 8.5 hurricane, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe if you had a 13hp engine like me, but I still get 20mph +. So I don't see why it would not work for you. You may have a little more weight, but almost double the power.

      The boat is a 1436 with a 13hp predator engine and a Swamp Runner medium kit. Normal speed is 18 mph with a 8.5" prop and two people. I've gotten it to 23mph with a 9" prop.

    Thanks man for the reply! I’ve actually lightened my 670 some…. I got a light weight muffler and got the motor and kit to about 170 pounds. Still heavy but how much weight was in the front of yours with deck troller battery ext? I’ve gotta get mine fine tuned just working on it as I can! When I don’t use it I figured out folding it around and siting the skeg on the ground lets the water come out and keeps some weight off to! I’m sure you knew that tho

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  Месяц назад

      I have videos on how much the floor and front deck weigh. Then I had a big deep cycle battery up front so guestimate at 60lbs there, plus the trolling motor, and then miscellaneous stuff that was probably about 20lbs. If it was a fishing trip, I would have a cooler with ice, a couple of rods, and a bow. Sometimes I would have a second person with me but I normally ran the weedless prop anyway. Speed was never a priority. Most of the distances I fish are quite short.

      @@JTgatoring yeah okay I’ll be sure to watch those videos ! But speed is some what a priority because I’m running long stretches of river. With a group but what’s your opinion on float pods ? I’m thinking on adding them but will I loose speed. If I do them correctly I shouldn’t right ?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  Месяц назад

      @@coltensawyer6761 Float pods will make you lose speed with a longtail. If anything, it would have to be one "float pod" that goes from side to side, aka a hunt deck. You want the trailing edge of the transom to be one straight line. When you add float pods, you break that line which negatively affects performance when it comes to a longtail. Look up "hull speed". Boat hulls hit a wall when they reach a certain speed depending on the design of the hull. After that wall, any additional power added is less effective. As a general rule, if the width of the boat is kept the same and the length is increased, the hull-speed/hull-efficiency increases also, but with increased length, there is also more drag due to increased surface area so more power will be needed. So what I guess I'm trying to explain is, you are adding more weight and more surface area and not changing your hp so you will likely see a decrease in speed unless the changes made greatly increase the efficiency of the hull.

      @@JTgatoring okay fair enough! I was thinking on trying them because they helped my buddy’s boat out Is why I ask ! How much bow rise do you want when running the boat ? Basically how much of the bow should not be contacting the water when planing out ? On are size boats. Few feet ? Thanks man your knowledge helps me !

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  25 дней назад

      @@coltensawyer6761 Through my eyes, when running on plane, the water line should be just behind the weld point on the jon boat bow where the bottom starts to make the bend to the bow. You want to ride pretty level, but if you were to favor one over the other, I would rather be transom-heavy than bow-heavy when it comes to performance. If you are bow heavy or just overloaded, the boat will start to plow which kills performance.
