- This is a guide on how to grow food for free or with very little money in an urban environment. I cover all the limiting factors that typically prevent people from gardening including space, raised beds and containers, water, compost, soil, mulch, seeds and go into how to compost, how to make a compost bin, how to harvest rainwater, how to do grey water, how to forage and much more. The idea of this video and guide is to help you get past all the limiting challenges of gardening in the city and get you to start growing some food. This guide is geared particularly at how to grow food for free or with very little money in an urban environment where space may be limited. One of the main keys to growing food for free in the city is to utilize wasted materials and resources. Creating a minimal environmental impact is a central part of everything in this guide and utilizing wasted materials and resources is one of the best ways to keep our environmental impact small.

Nice one and very inspiring
Rob you're a seriously inspiring guy... Never stop doing what you do...
Totally agree
Dude i'm starting this today in my back yard, your channel gave me so much motivation, I'm taking these technique in Africa to help out communities in need. It's ridiculous to starve on such a rich soil God has given to us.....knowledge is power.
That car bed is hilarious! My dog's plastic swimming pool got a hole in it so I made it into a raised bed for my radishes and beets!
There's gardening groups on facebook that treat those plastic pools as the gold standard for growing.
I use several kiddie pools in my garden. All my yellow squash is growing in it and doing very well
Kayla, I did the same with the pool my grandson outgrew. Planted strawberries, herbs and cucumbers in it. Surprised how much I could put in a small space.
Such a frugal and dare I say " down to earth" video. Love it. Save the earth, and landfills, by simple choices and mindsets. ❤️🌱🌾🌿
You are such a beautiful person giving away free seeds to those who cannot afford them. Love your videos! Thank you from Australia!
I'm 3 minutes in and had to stop to say, so simple and genuis. This stuff makes me so happy, especially in winter. Dreaming of spring adventures.
Rob Greenfield you are my hero. I am growing many vegtables and herbs on my terrace and I get all of my seeds from my shop bought veg, ie, peppers, tomatoes have grown. I am now trying avocados and I am looking for lemongrass and trying to start community garden here in a village in the South of Spain. Keep growing people, lets eat well, be independent and save the planet at the same time. :)
"Grow it in someone else's yard. Of course, ask them" 😂😂😂
also be careful about using old tires they can leech out chemicals
kittykat Goode I was thinking the exact same thing
Agreed. Can’t believe he suggested using old tires. Big no on that.
Same thing with pallet wood, they don't care what is has been treated with. Also pallets are totally reused by businesses, that's has changed www.thebalancesmb.com/what-happens-to-used-wood-pallets-2878167 I work for a grocery store, and taking the pallets or milk crates from behind a store is stealing, because the store reuses them over and over until they fall apart (I wish my store would get new ones, our are looking pretty bad).
The only thing I would plant in them would be flowers to attract bees and other pollinators
Would it work if you lined the tires with landscape fabric?
The plastic car is a child's bed. My son has one. We will be turning it into a garden when he grows
better not buy that crap in the first place
I believe it is a researcher with the University of Alberta who determined that food plants grown in soil from a municipal dump do not contain more toxins than produce bought at the grocery store.

Awesome Rob! Grow your own food!
It really is easy. Don't listen to people who tell you it is hard or expensive. It's only as hard or expensive as you want to make it. I grew 14 foot tomato plants using recycled pallets for a raised bed, free craigslist concrete mesh for trellises, free and homemade compost. My only expense was water, but some of it was free, harvested off my roof. I grew hundreds of dollars worth of tomatoes for a small fraction of what they cost in the store, and they were higher quality and more delicious than any store bought tomato. Tomatoes are just one of many thousands of varieties of edible plants you can grow. Even if you have to pay for materials and use city water you will ultimately save money and resources growing your own. Not to mention it just feels good to grow it yourself.
I hate pep that just burn pallets. Soo many uses, soo little time. I had a Troy Burial Ground pile of 1in to 2 in sticks 8 ft long.....the pilke was 4ftx8ctx20ft. My wife burned it because the insurance company threatened to cancel us.....they did anyway. I can't believe I started doing this only 10 years ago or so. Rob G is the dude though, drew tears when he said he gives away seeds. Off to toss wood chips from my drive on top of the fall leaves on the compost/garden out back.
Great video Rob. I recently discovered that my local library actually has a free seed bank that folks can give and take from.
Wisconsin does that too!
This is such a cool idea.
To find out if seeds are good put water in a bowl dump seeds in water. if the seeds float on top they are bad. if the seeds sink to bottom they are good. most seeds will be good for 3 or 4 years
Oh. I thought seeds can last forever.
I just planted pumpkin from seeds I saved 11 years ago
I've had seeds that floated but sprouted anyways
Sometimes seeds take a while to sink, and can take a little push under to actually sink.
Kitty Kat, the same concept for eggs
There are no excuses in starting a garden. Watching your video has motivated me even more to continue doing what I am doing even though, friends think I am a little obsessive with growing my on food. You have re-energized me again--keep up the the great work in spreading the word. Thanks!
I agree with composting AND would like to point out that we have had a problem with rats and racoons being attracted. Sometimes the free city soil contains invasive plant seeds like garlic mustard (which you can eat, but they do take over). Just to be aware of these possibilities . Overall, absolute praise for all you efforts putting all this info together to share. LOVE the work you do, awareness you bring and action you take to show what can be done. You are a real gem! You have a great sense of how to inspire people and present your ideas in a clear and actionable way. Many thanks for your creative mind in being socially enterprising.
Have to mention something. I had a lot of garlic mustard in my yard, when I moved in 20 years ago. Years had passed and someone told me I could eat them. I tried it. Liked and now they are few and would be easy to eradicate, but I leave a few cuz I'm not worried And I really like eating straight off the stalk so to speak. I suggest doing what frogs do...eat whatever bugs them. Haha. Funny but true. Let them invade, I'll keep eating.
AS a home gardener here in beautiful Barbados in culinary herbs..thyme..chives..marjoram..etc..Your video is very informative and as you rightly said can be done easy and simple diy..Have a good day!
You're compost veggies are great places to get seeds as well. Almost all of my plants come from seeds and starts from my veggie scraps. Keep the bottom stems from lettuces, cabbage, green onions, carrots etc. All potatoes will grow starts that you can put in water to grow roots. Then plant them. Almost all other veggies have seeds. I save all my seeds in the late winter and get them planted in old egg cartons or whatever else I can get cheap at the dollar store. There are seed swaps online that make for some awesome selections. You can trade with people all over the country.
rob you're a bloody legend mate. also @ 2:19 those murals on the abandoned apartments are sick
Just wandered onto your video and I really enjoyed it. I live in the country (in France) and grow vegetables in various types of containers. I use my well to water along with rain water, and grow organically...or as organically as possible. I was really impressed by the way and the quantity of food you "process". More power to you and thanks!
Rob, you are such and great guy! Keep shining and making the world a better place
Excellent synthesis Rob. Of course in countries with colder weather it may not be as simple though.
Thank you Rob! Inspiring and practical :D The only thing I would add is to be careful with the buckets, try to understand what they have been used before as they may have toxic residues. Grow food not lawns! ;)
I am a first year gardener, with mixed results. So learning as I go already looking to expand nest year. Thanks for the great tips on doing it cheap.
Wonderful! In Philadelphia where I live, the Fairmount Park recycling center gives away free compost and wood chips to anyone who lives in Philadelphia. I went and stocked up last week and I can’t tell you what a boon that has been for my urban gardening! What great ideas you have.
Rob we need more people like you brother, God bless you!!
🌸This is beautiful and inspiring. Hungry people can’t worry about many details at first therefore I commend your efforts there in Bankhead. I sure hope people are not only listening to you but taking action.🌸
Great suggestions. Also, to determine if seeds are viable put a few on a damp paper towel. Fold over so the seeds are well covered. Keep damp for about 5 days. When the towel is unfolded, good seeds will have started to sprout. Fresh food will always taste better than store bought.
This video will make any one want to have a Food Garden.... Very well done Young Sir!!!!
I just thought of something and I"m sure I"m not the first to think of it but instead of plastic bags, it may be more sustainable to use plastic containers, or any container, but like you said in another video, the glass jars don't handle the space as efficiently in confined space like a freezer, which is true, yes.
It is very sad that pallets aren't at least used in a different way. It's about finding a combination of cost effectiveness and sustainability, of course, and always thinking of the ideas, some of which seem crazy probably such as the one that will actually worked.
An idea people thought was crazy back in the day was surgeons washing hands. It was proven in an experiment to save many lives, in a controlled experiment in the mid-1800s but the medical community ignored it. Well, now we know, it's kinda important. =D
OMG I love the silver Celica

Thank you for sharing the various ways to make a raised bed garden and compost! It shows that you really CAN make a compost/garden no matter what budget or living space you've got. Very inspiring and full of great resources.
Super resourceful and creative, just wow man
I SO resonate with you! Already doing this in my own yard, hoping to start a Community garden in an empty lot.
It's a car bed for a child sans mattress. My son had one exactly like it!😊 Also, rainwater running down roofing tiles may contain some chemical contaminants. Foraging is great but it's so important to be knowledgeable so as not to get poisoned. Also to be certain those yards have not been sprayed. Of course, the weeds will die after treatment but it's the interim. People usually flag their yards if treated but things can happen. Anyway, I am new to your channel and I love it!
REALLY INSPIRING! THANKS!
Loved this - feeling very inspired to grow! I started my first herb the other day - Mint (as it's the easiest!) moving on to salads next!
Aislinn Lynch you will love it. get a salad container, a pack of dollar tree lettuce seeds, an inch of soil and plant the seeds and water/soak, cover with a dark clean towel. your lettuce will sprout in a few days. keep moist. then put in sunny window. you have just grown part of your salad.
Be careful with mint!!! It will take over 😲if it's not in a pot. Like a WEED. Congrats on your new gardening adventure! Wish you were local, I would hook you up with garlic, turmeric etc...
You are a real 100 percent pure human.
Love your energy
Very insightful! thanks for this information
Very inspiring!!
this is cool. inspired me to set up my barrel for rain water and loved the makeshift watering can.
dude you got it going on..thanks for ideas..tires as raise beds is a gd idea
This is really helpful! I got a lot of seeds from the food bank and I have been putting them in used plastic cups, containers I made from scrap cardboard, and some pots my mom had in her garden. I took some of her compost and mixed it with some leftover soil she had from a hanging plant, and now I have a bunch of seeds planted and possibly growing!
Proud of you Rob ! You are doing an awesome work !!!
Keep it up my brother.....🙏👍
