It really sickens me when i see these young westernised Myslim men pressuring other men to "not allow" their daughters and wives to leave the house or earn money etc. Its like they want so badly to have a society where women and girls are solely dependent on the wishes and permissions of their fathers and husbands, and have no authority or financial supremacy to make their lives bettwr. Actually I noticed a very weird behavior in guys where I live, most of them control their sisters or cousins and restrict their freedom, but once they get married, their daughters become an exception and encouraged to become successful.
I read a story about a woman who got stopped from continuing education in middle school by her brother. One day she heard her brother saying he was planning to get married to a successful educated woman he met. She said all frustration, anger, sadness she felt all her life exploded in that moment. all hell broke loose and she told her brother "you will not get a successful woman. if you get married, you'll have to marry a woman with MY level of education, or I swear to god I'll murder her, or you, or both and I won't care for the consequences"

As a Turkish young adult, political islam ruined my childhood, my teenage years and killed my hopes and dreams. And we are talking about a country that's supposedly secular and the people are mostly cultural muslims. She is so strong for going through all of that, but I wish she didn't have to.
I wanna add to the al sirat topic. That in itself is horrible, but I also grew up being told that the only people who didn't sin were the prophets, that it was inevitable for us to sin. My old neighbors were refugees from Iran. I am going to contact them and see if they’d want to speak on your podcast. I think more should know their story which ended better than a lot of peoples. Their story is insane and shows just how extreme and horrible extremism can be.
He spoke out in a blog basically saying “whether you follow the book or not, if you are a good person, that’s all that matters…” he was put into jail, wife was taken to a literal concentration camp and was used as a sexual slave and suffers from physical repercussions even years later from the abuse, their son was taken and put into military training (luckily was 3/4 so has few memories of the time). Their story is wild, their escapes were even wilder and sound like a movie. He was sentenced to death…sometimes they’d come get him, put a hood on him, click their guns like it was time and laugh and put him back and other horrible tortures…he pretended to be super happy in his 4x4 cell, had chats with invisible folk and a “great time”, I guess they didn’t believe in execution of someone who was mentally ill, put on his hood, drove him to middle of nowhere said such and dropped him. He got his son freed somehow, they WALKED to Turkey from Iran, slept outside the embassy and refused to leave until seen, after an extended period they got his wife back…and were granted refuge by the US.
They have some serious trauma and are the bravest people I’ve ever encountered. They are beyond kind and just making a simple statement on his blog caused pure insanity. They are extremely happy to have their freedom here, have both gone back to college, their son gets top grades, is a fantastic athlete and the sweetest kid, they are alwayssss joking, smiling, helping others, always bbq-ing, playing sports, gardening and just loving life now. By their attitudes? You’d think they grew up in Disney. They are truly so grateful and I am grateful we have them.

No matter what religion, addiction, ideology or personality disorder (since they all work the same way) that happens with, it's so harmful and damaging to children and often typically especially young women and girls. So glad Yasmine got away with her daughter. And she had the wisdom to figure out what kind of mother she wanted to be for her daughter. She had so much to work through and overcome. Hi tomorrow I will be 65 I was raised in a liberal Catholic family much to my grandmothers displeasure. I have been an agnostic theist for the past forty years. While I understand the formal religion can give someone comfort and help them feel secure I also believe it is regularly misused to push certain agenda and sadly those that do this are usually men often with the aid and abetment of a certain type of woman. I approach all religions with caution as they have caused so much death, destruction and misery over the past Millenia.

As an Indian woman, i often find it's crazy where women today (across the world) still change their last name after marriage. I m vocal about changing any part of your identity is a damage to one soul. We are NOT anyone's property. NO ONE should change them to become someone else's life. I've 2 boys, they fully understand we are all equal and their future partners should not change anything - no name changes to become part of someone's property. Then after my BA I lived in Lebanon for 3 years, which famously hosts 18 officially recognized sects, and saw how the application of those doctrines in everyday life, if carried to a more extreme level, did nothing but divide and antagonize people. Needless to say it cured me from any further interest in religion (for added context I LOVE Lebanon and had tons of "secular" and culturally Christian/Muslim friends there, but I also experienced a lot of exclusionism and "us vs. them" mentality, as well as people with very extreme views)

TBH ALL child genital mutilation needs to be brought to the forefront. Male circumcision is just as unnecessary and painful as FGM. The babies scream, cry, and go silent from shock. There are alarming amounts of babies just... bleeding out. There are still societies where people will casually sip cocktails and eat hors d'oeuvres while the infant is bawling in pain. Freakin Mayim Bialik was open about putting her son's foreskin in a piece of wall art, while having the audacity to talk about feminism. While she was willing to compromise on Seder by choosing vegan options.
As a society, we can't have it both ways. Nobody should be beyond criticism where child bodily autonomy is concerned. We need to live in a world where people hear about these practices and call out mutilators, without any care for their religious sensitivities.

They want those who are vulnerable, empathetic, wanting a community who are doing the right thing, susceptible to influence. The manipulation tactics are specifically tailored toward people who will represent the cult the best. Who wants to join a cult full of people who are clearly unsympathetic, unattractive, or don't offer rewards and salvation?
