Keep your hand in front of op rod handle while using the thumb of said hand to fiddle around in the receiver/action. Pull thumb out then rock hand up and away from op rod handle. Never get another Garand thumb again
I saw another RUclipsr try that same gas tube plug and he was not able to fire M2 (appropriate) rated ammo either, and he does not recommend the product. It reduces the pressure for the action too much with the correct ammo. Also, a stainless steel spring? Stainless steel is not spring steel and does not have the same properties as spring steel. I would put back the spring it came with (CMP makes sure these guns are operational before making them available) and put the original plug back in while you are using the appropriate ammo for the gun, such as this PPU. I get PPU for my 96/11 Schmidt Rubin, that was made in 1900, as well. It takes 7.5x55 Swiss.

@@crankygunreviews It was my dad's issued service rifle during WW2 and it was used by the honor guard at his funeral so that was fitting. Those guys were great. When I thanked them they said they wanted to be there because he was one of their brothers. Brothers in arms. I have shot an M1 rifle before when I was in the gun club way back when from a guy that had put an M1 together with spare parts. So for a slapped together M1 it shot great. The recoil is not bad at all because it weighs nine pounds. It is really accurate and joy to shoot.
@@crankygunreviews Try taking off the gas plug and running the original with the PPU loaded specifically for the M1. Don't sell it. You'll regret it, like me lol. I ordered another from the CMP but it will probably take a while to get.
to me the issue seemed more like a recoil spring issue, seemed like it was not strong enough to push the rounds out of the clip into battery... I hope the carbine works better than this 😬
Oh you’ll see tomorrow :)
I'd say that new stainless recoil spring just needs to be broken in. Love the M1 hopefully I can get myself one someday
Yeah, only problem is the ammo is not cheap, so I'm blowing $60-$80 every time I take it out to "break the spring in more"
@@crankygunreviews oh yea man it's not cheap at all, I've got a mauser 30-06 I can barely use bc of how expensive it is. Same for my enfield

@@rbm6184 I agree the recoil is very manageable- way better than my Ruger American in 308 or 450 BM
