    One of your best videos Julian. absolutely loved it.
    Nick's gallery looks great. Images and a cafe in one place, you can't ask for more. The fotoVUE books are such a fantastic idea. I've got the lot, and I've preordered the rest.
    More videos like this please Julian.

      Wow! Cheers Paul! ☺ Yeah, I've got most of the fotoVue books and I've used them many times. Now that I've been to Snowdonian, I'll be using this more often. If you get a chance, don't miss the gallery. I'll hopefully be able to produce more videos like this over 2019. Thanks again for your support!

    Hi Julian. What a fantastic video you've created here !! I'm a huge fan of Nick Livesey's work and love his FotoVue guidebook. W.A. Poucher's book is also in my collection and I bet there'll be a few more sales when folks watch this. It's great to see you in Snowdonia with Nick, especially up and around Crimpiau, an area that's very special to me. It's a photographer's paradise up there in North Wales and you certainly got some fantastic light on Moel Eilio. I've always enjoyed your "on my bookshelf" series but you've raised the bar to a whole new level with this edition, so a massive thank you for a tremendous watch Julian.

    Superb Video Julian, the mountain scenery was epic and the photos too. What a top fella Nick is - so talented but humble. His gallery & prints are beautifully presented - just awesome. Nick's knowledge and appreciation of local poetry shows his interest in that art form too which made the video all the more interesting. Talk about turn a negative into a positive. The way he made a dramatic lifestyle change in such a successful way after his relationship broke down. Would you say the morale of his story is 'Ditch the Bitch & go for it'? 😉 Hey and what a fantastic place that cafe is - a full English in a photography studio - nice 👍

    Had the book a couple of months now ... very inspiring ... You looked flippin cold ..In the book the section on clothing says carry a down fill jacket cos as soon as you stop walking and are hanging around waiting for the light you need to wrap up. Noticed Nick layered up and you didn't. So there is the first bit of valuable info straight from the pages of the book. Worth buying .

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      It's a great book isn't it! While I did look cold, and it was actually cold, it wasn't unbearable. I did have layers on. Had a base layer, a mid layer, a down jacket, and the orange waterproof you can see in the video. I've spent for too many mornings on Dartmoor or down at the coast not to have warm clothing! lol😀👍😀 The thing that really gets me is the fingers. Can never keep them warm....well, I've got very good gloves and they are brilliant, but they make using the camera tricky, so I often take them off, which I just as often regret.

    Great video Julian, highly entertaining, Nick's book is one of the best guides I've read to the area, nice tribute to Walter Poucher, his books also inspired me to take up hillwalking. I've done part or all of around half the walks featured and this year I hope to complete them, I always carry a camera, just a basic Fujifilm compact, I'm now at the stage where I want to improve my photography and maybe progress to a DSLR but haven't the foggiest on where to begin, the choices of camera options is a bit bewildering for a novice...

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Mark, really great to hear you enjoyed the video.👍😀 I can appreciate how difficult it must be to pick your next camera. There are so many choices to suit so many budgets! Perhaps something from Fuji might be a good start. They are small enough to take hillwalking, but don't lack for image quality and range of lenses. If you don't already have a DSLR, I would be tempted to go down the mirrorless route - all the major players, including Fuji, Sony, Canon, and Nikon have mirrorless cameras now. Also, consider going to The Photography Show in Birmingham next month. It's a great way to look at and touch all the cameras. You might find it an easier way to find something that suits. Plus, you might even pick up a "show bargain".

    • @Slademarkable
      @Slademarkable 6 лет назад +1

      @@jbairdexp Great, cheers for the advice, there's no point in rushing into things and Birmingham is just a short train journey away, so I'll have a look. My neighbour recently bought a Nikon DSLR and he's also a keen walker, so I'll try to arrange a photography based walk on the local hills with him, as well. I've seen some great looking deals via SLR Hut but am very dubious, if something seems too good to be true, it probably isn't...?

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mark, though I haven't used SLR Hut personally, if they are offering really cheap prices it normally means it's a grey import. While the price is cheap, you won't benefit from the manufacturers UK / EU warranty. Some of these grey importers will offer their own warranty, but this is unlikely to be as good / robust as the manufacturers warranty. Though I would always buy a UK model from an authourised seller like WEX, I do know of at least one person who buys grey imports and hasn't had any problems. The best way to save money though, IMHO, is to go something like the Photography Show and pick up camera from one of the retailers there as all but the very very latest models will have some sort of discount, cash back or some sort of other incentive.😀

    Great film Julian and very well presented. Nicks gallery looked amazing as it's something I have long wanted for myself. I used to walk the mountains of that region in winter myself when I was younger, so it was nice to see them again. I doubt I could get anywhere near the summits nowadays with my medium format kit! Is the f-stopper bag that you have designed for hiking fist and foremost? My Lowepro 450aw is an absolute dead weight when it's empty!

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks Simon, that's most kind of you to say. That walk we did only had a few steep bits, so you never know, you might be able to make it even with all your MF kit! Just don't take a drone, vlogging gear, and a FF camera and lenses like I did lol! The F-Stop bag is definately a camera bag, but it's a camera bag designed for the outdoors, so it's really rugged. However, probably like you Lowepro bag, it still has a bit of weight about it when empty. I love the bag though because it allows me to carry heavy loads in comfort (thanks to all the straps), but not sure if it would be any better than the Lowepro in terms of weight. 😀

Had no idea who it was at the time and have been checking RUclips out all week to see who was posting on Moel Eilio. Hope you enjoyed, remember to take your sledge next time for a quicker decent!!

      Hey Carl, I did spot another photographer...was that you on the west side of the fence, shooting west / south-west? Anyway, yes, had a totally amazing day. Loved ever minute of it. I like the idea of a sledge and fast descent! 😀👍😀

      @@jbairdexp yes that was me Julian. I shot down the valley towards Moel Hebog and the village of Beddgelert. Did take a couple of shots in the same direction as you, only including the fence and crossing ladder in my composition. Didn't quite get the Alpine glow I was hoping for, but the low sun did give a nice spotlight effect on Snowdon and surrounding mountains. The cloud seemed to lift off the summit just after sunset, it looked pretty claggy all day. Brutal ascent of Moel Eilio with all that camera gear, but next time I think I'll fix it to a sledge and tow it, artic expedition style!! Then descend in double time!! Glad you enjoyed my back yard! 😀
      Enjoyable vlog btw, keep up the good work!

    Agree re gloves. I cant get on with the finger tip gloves for photography. When i was younger i did a lot of cycling and use cycle gloves when filming but invariably take them off. I also carry my skiing sallopetes to stick on when I'm stationery . Difficult to balance everything out with what you can reasonably carry . Would really like to find just 1 lens to carry. Enjoyed your video and subscibed.

      Yeah, that's the challenge isn't it. What to take and what not to take. As for one lens, if I'm going to be in the mountains, I'll take just the 24-70 mm....at a push, I'll also take a 70-200, but unless I know that I need one of my other lenses for a specific shot, I like the 24-70. It doesn't fit all scenerios, but has a good all round focal length. Very happy to hear you have subscribed. Much appreciated! 👍👍👍

    Don't know how well you know Nick but i have heard him tell the story of how he ended up in Snowdonia before but what i would love to know is how he did it. Its no mean feat to just up sticks no job no house and make a success of things.

      Probably a story best told by Nick himself. He would tell it so much better than I could by typing it out here. Maybe he'll make a video about himself one day. He as a way of telling a good story. 😃

    Given that this fella (Nick) purports to be a mountain leader I don't get that he has his down jacket over his waterproof jacket (min 16.30 ish) surely the layer principle tells us that the outer layer should be the water/wind proof garment??

      That's probably a question you need to raise with Nick. :-) Hope you still enjoyed the video.

      Hello there, thanks for the comment. I do not purport to be anything, I AM a mountain leader with with 20 years experience and over 1000 days on the hill. In this scenario, where there is no threat of precipitation, I find that chucking on an insulated jacket over my wind/waterproof when I stop for a bit of photography is ideal. I could, however, have taken off my Paramo jacket in order to conform to your ideals but that would have meant losing all the heat I had already built up in my layering system for no logical reason other than someone said I should. That my insulated jacket has gone on top of my windproof doesn't make my windproof any less windproof. There is absolutely nothing to see here but thanks for your advice.
