This film is no joke. The world is full of persons who just need the right others to bring the best out of them, and, thankfully, the world is full of such persons too. To spin this moving, lighthearted movie that rises above the sentimental and commonplace was a triumph of the finest writing and acting. It is Oscar class work. May there be a Miss Fortune for all who are in need of one, or may you be the Miss Fortune yourself for someone in your life who needs you. Perhaps Fortune will smile on you both!
This was Richard Carlson’s first feature film! He was appearing in a play on Broadway with Ethel Barrymore (their second play together) when David O. Selznick offered him the part. Ethel Barrymore convinced him to take it. He wrote later that he would always be grateful to her for her encouragement. ❤️
I absolutely love this movie! I had joyful tears at the end. I wish we lived this way today. My best to all associated with the making and the uploading of this film. Thank you and God bless you!
There are two 1930's films I cannot BELIEVE I hadn't seen before and once I found them I've watched them again and again. One was the delicious comedy 'Midnight' and then there is this pure delight.
"Don't you see, Marmy? She Saved us! She saved us!" I cried and I cried. In this terrible, harsh world we now live in, how moved I was to see this moment of redemption. As I was watching this film, I never would have guessed how deeply it would touch me. I loved each and every member of this cast.
@@cynthiakaminski9836 I hope that you loved it as much as I did. This movie caused me to do something I don't think I ever have done before. I have watched it three times in the past three weeks.
I think the performances are stunning, particularly Janet Gaynor, Roland Young and Billie Burke. The actress you portrayed Miss Fortune was unknown to me. I was captivated by her.
@@gigihess4229 I realize the advantages we, as people living in the 21st century, have. And I realize that fascism and plagues have occurred throughout history, not just now. We, on the other hand, have climate change and a potentially doomed future to contend with. The rampant ignorance of the far right is harsh and terrible, too, come to mention it. But otherwise, Gigi, how did you like the film?
@@gigihess4229 I will tell you how harsh the world is: it's dying and we're hell-bent to kill it. There's nowhere on Earth you can retreat to that hasn't felt the bad hand of man upon it. This is unique in history and is happening right now.
I came back to see again this delightful story, this time I'd like to comment on the fine musical score that added much to the pleasure of this film. 👍
With a tear and a smile..... ideal to evoke emotions that have suffered this past 18 mths; emotions that have retracted per a per, to almost non existence, retreating behind a heavy and smothering cloak of anger and insecurity. A cloak that threatens to extinguish all traces of loving, caring, humanity and which seeks to abruptly detach us from out past and our heritage, making fools of us all. Thankyou for the brief moment to remember connections to the past and to forget that which troubles my soul for the future.
Carolle Enkelmann, you are sorrily articulate about the dark "cloak" that is descending upon the world. After World War I and in the midst of the Depression, these kinds of films were scooted out to lift the spirits of the audiences. Imagine, no one had any idea that a foot-soldier named Adolph Hitler would rain hell on their lives in just a few short years. We are in the final stage, it seems - the "End Times". God bless the memories of the past, be they celluloid confections like this or the traditions you mention that celebrate our heritage as a once great nation.

Yes, this is a wonderful film, finely acted. The cast is all excellent and really perfect.....even the penguins. Richard Carlson does a fine job in his first movie appearance as he is acting with a formidable cast of movie pros. Billie Burke is her divine silly self, but showing her true colors near the end of the film. The murals in the Office of Engineering appear to be done by the same person who painted the murals in Rockefeller Center. This movie deserves to be restored. But I must warn you there are more commercials during this film that any film I've ever seen on RUclips. They are merciless, only the charm of the film, and the fine cast. kept me watching. Delightful, such characters portrayed with skill, these fine actors of their time beat any current film. Not that I have seen any, I just won't even bother to try to view today's productions. Give me a classic 30's or 40's film with such quality sans the overt, in your face sex and murderous gore of present day tolerences and expectations of gratuitous scenes as such. (edited addition follows) Certainly there is little in productions of this era that depicts more than a limited reality of how difficult it was to represent the full spectrum of people and their life's ups and downs with the attitude many in the studios had towards people of color. Studio heads looking at the bottom line, figuring on who would be paying the admission to their theater production was much like today, a production had to attract an audience and sponcers period! This era was sadly very difficult for many actors whom languished as bit characters. Actors of color then and now struggle to break into film and stage. Sure there were in the early years some actors of color that were mildly successful only too often though the characters were in film only to play the butler, steward, house keepers, side kicks in western features and so on .
