I was about to say this has to be a V1 switch. You don't really see the cracking and or vent issues with V2 given the fairly big temperature differences.
That Switch has seen some really great days and some really not so great days. RIP Kate’s Switch I’ve had mine since launch day and the only major issues I’ve had with the system were one bout with joycon drift and my original dock no longer working with a wireless steelseries headset
had a Switch for 4 years. Played it nearly everyday. Took it all over the place I could the first couple years. No cracks or scratches at all. Kinda proud about that
Always loved the ONM podcast back in t’day, and these long-form discussion videos are basically miniature podcasts with complimentary Smash Bros. footage, so it was both refreshing and nostalgic having Kate bring her winsome brand of low-key chaos into the mix. Given that this basically IS the NL podcast, I hope we can look to more guest appearances in the future, including more Kate!
@@RosyAu As much as I enjoyed your verbal contributions, I have to admit it was those tasty, downright JUICY edits that kept me coming back for more. “EDIT IN THE GOAL, MY SON! BACK O’ THE NET! Still, if you guys hadn’t recorded the material in the first place, there would’ve been nothing to edit, and no edits to enjoy, so I’m obviously very glad you did that.
(If it’s not clear: I didn’t actually notice the edits. They were perfectly seamless. I just really enjoyed listening to you guys chewing the fat about... stuff. Magazines are pretty rigid media, so hearing your unscripted thoughts drift up from the ether and bounce off each other was genuinely entertaining)
When I got my Switch I ordered it through a bundle on GameStop it came with a case, game, and accessory that I've never used. So I was happy with that. As I would never take my Switch anywhere without a case that is defined with it in mind. I also ordered a screen protector as some of you reminder that in the early days that some of the docks would get your screen scratched, thus I applied it as I opened it. And a few years later my Switch is doing pretty good.
Have you seen how difficult it is to replace the shell? If the damage was just to the back plate, then fair enough it’s pretty easy to swap. But Kate has cracked air vents which will require the front housing to be replaced which is where the difficulty is. Speaking from personal experience.
This just makes me so grateful that my brother got me some Switch screen protectors for my birthday, which was soon after the Switch's launch. Because that wouldn't have crossed my mind otherwise, and while my screen protector has a huge scratch in it, the Switch's screen itself was protected. I still have my launch Switch and it's in pretty decent condition, though still not as good as I would have hoped from a Nintendo product. It gets really loud when I first start playing a game as if the poor little fan is working itself to death, but it quiets down after about five minutes. My launch joycons, however, are unusable due to drift. I've decided to keep them as they are and not tamper with them, but if my current set starts drifting, I will open them up and replace the sticks.
I have some of the same issues with my switch that Kate has with hers. I have a chipped area on the right side (from the back) on the shell, which I've bought a replacement for it but I'm too scared to switch the shells out. Some scratches on the screen, mostly the bezel, some on the display area. The main problem I have with mine is whenever the fan is on, it makes a really loud noise. Which I wanna try fixing if I can, but I don't know how to do that. I'm still able to play games on I just fine though. That fan just scares me.
This has to be a version 1 Switch. Version 2 Switch doesn't heat up as much. I have never had my regular Switch out of dock since I've had it so mint. I only use a Switch lite on the go which is also mint. I use Screen covers, a Switch hard shell body protector & hard shell case always.
Ever since launch, I’ve thought my Switch would fall victim to some of these issues. The only thing I’ve had happen is the Drift. Otherwise, my Switch still looks brand new.
My first Switch had 2 cracks where the kickstand is, where the cracks came from the top right corners of the kickstand area. It got so bad I had to replace the back of the Switch myself.
I am making this short and sweet. Like Kate, I have also experienced Joy-Con drift and issues with the back plate breaking and the little "toothpicks" over the heat sinks. I had an older switch that had cracked plastic. My current switch which I got after I used a third party charger on my first one has had no issues and I've had it for years.
I got my Switch on launch and have a hardshell case(an actual hardshell case, not one of those that call themselves hardshell but they're actually flimsy), and my Switch is JUST FINE. Protect your stuff well and it won't end up a broken mess.
Is that Kate Gray I hear? I still remember Kate from her short time on ONM back in the day. The episodes where she featured the ONM podcast along with Matthew Castle, Joe Skrebbels and Gav Murphy are some of my personal favourites.
My Switch has a huge scratch on the screen, small, hard to notice scratches made thanks to the Dock and a ton of scratches on the back, not only that but the cooler on the console and it overheats with games such as Smash, Animal Crossing, FighterZ, etc. When Docked, speaking of the dock, when the console is on the chargers for my Joycons and Pro Controller simply don't work.
I had a crack on my previous 4 year old Switch’s casing right exactly where the piece of it is missing at 8:28 And my Switch was usually mostly always docked when I played it. I also noticed a crack in the clear part on the home button of the Joycon, and after I had switched to the Pro Controller.
Mines lived in its case or dock since launch day - sadly some of the toothpick bits by the air inlet arrived broken and it’s made me sad but it was back in the day when I wouldn’t get a replacement very quickly.
Send it in for repairs. Had the same issue with the screw and crack issue, right down to the fan exhaust breaking. The back of my switch even started to pop off. Believe me not having a case for handheld is not the problem as mine had the same damages all while being mostly docked. I called and they replaced the entire shell for free. Even if they don't do that for you, I still reccomended Nintendo Support above all else. Nintendo Support is always happy to help. In my experience, as long as you are genuine and honest, they will treat you well. I've called them a total of 3 times and everytime they have been so much more than helpful. As consumers it's important to understand that the Switch was manufactured for its price. Cheap plastic is going to fall apart after hundreds and hundreds of hours of gaming, this is why a new Switch feels better there is simply nothing anybody can do with these two facts in mind. Express that understanding in a genuine way, and support will show their understanding. This goes for any service call. Simply putting the blame on Switch won't get you anywhere, and buying another one is not the only solution.
I had a similar crack in my Switch, purchased on launch day and I did use a case when travelling. Ended up replacing the back shell, did some mistakes in assembly but it works. At least one "tooth" in the fan/vent cover is damaged, but not gone. The screen should still be OK, with a screen protector installed. Next step is to attempt to fix joycon drift, two out of three pairs affected so far.
My switch has had the covering on the vent completely break off and I have a scuff on the bezzle that I cannot get rid off even though it just looks like a smudge
So far my ACNH Switch is near immaculate. Only thing is a few scratches on the Switch cartridge flap. Gotta be honest, Kate's pictures made a tear roll out my eye. 😥
My Switch has the same issues with cracking, and I don't think I've been rough with it at all? It really seems to be a manufacturing flaw, that I would fix, but I'm scared I'll screw it up, or be unable to pay for the repairs.
If your quickstand gets loose, there's a good chance that you can fix it by removing the Switch's back plate and tightening the screws that are above the quickstand slot. Sounds weird, but it worked for me, and I wasn't even expecting it, I was just swapping my backplate, and then noticed that the quickstand would attach way better afterwards.
