I understand your point here with the overcoming linked to 1 John 5, but aren’t the other six letters in Revelation 2-3 taking about rewards (which are only applicable to some believers)? Do you think this is the only one that suddenly uses “overcoming” not in the sense of rewards, but in entering eternal life?
Sorry for the late response, but yes there is a great deal of context about rewards and chastisement for the sin of these churches in Rev 2-3. However, that doesn't discount the idea that truths about salvation can be sprinkled in with truths about rewards or works. That is very common in the bible. It is akin to "You are saved, so act like it" (Eph 5:8). "Overcomer" could hypothetically be used differently, but it is unlikely. It is the same author (John) and he even goes so far as to rhetorically say "who is an overcomer except the one who believes?" (1 John 5:4-5). We also have to harmonize with other clearer passages on salvation that don't require defining terms like 'overcomer' (John 3:16, Rom 4:4-8, Rom 3:24-26, etc.) Hope that helps.
