The crush tells you cyclists in L.A. / SGV are staving for more events like this, like CicLAvia. Looking forward to your videos from Spain. Safe travels.

I agree. A lot of people I spoke to complained about the crowds and sketchy conditions of having so many cyclists crammed into essentially 1.5 lanes of freeway, but it really just shows how much demand there is for safe, car-free cycling infrastructure in LA.
I had a great time in spite of the crowds, but I went in with the expectation that it would be slow and cramped. I just loved seeing so many people out on bikes!

I can't tell you how heartwarming this is to see. This freeway (CA Route 110 aka Arroyo Seco Parkway) is really starting to show its age, with sharp corners, even sharper entries and exits, no shoulder and only a few places to pull over. Plus, as you can see here, it's in a heavily urbanized area that could benefit from reduced noise and air pollution. Looking back through history, every combination of bike path, rail, and road has been proposed for this route. Let's hope it can go on a "road diet" soon.
I'm so glad you two got a chance to see this rare event.

Fun fact: the 110 was originally America’s first Cycleway back in the 1890’s during America’s Bicycle craze

We also have a Car Free Day every Sunday from 6am to 11am in Jakarta Indonesia since 2002. CFD also applied to neighbouring areas and cities, but hours may vary accordingly.

I have lived in LA for 32 years and I was there today. There was a similar event (626 Golden Streets, I mean) about 7 years ago but it was cold and rainy that day and only a few people showed up. Anyway, what amazes me at these events (CicLAvia, a similar and more frequent event around town, also draws huge crowds when the weather is good) is how many people in LA turn out to have bikes. LA has a massive housing crisis, but it would appear it does not have a garage crisis. I would love a video of just walking up to people and asking them "where is that bike during the week?"

As an annual event, the 5 Boro Bike Tour in NYC draws some 30K riders to go 42 miles along a whole mess of freeways and major bridges. It’s a true bike carnival, mind blowing in size. Groups will strap odd things to their helmets to keep track of each other in the throngs. An amazingly complex mass event, staffed by dedicated volunteers that have seen just about everything in the nearly 50 years it has been put on. Dip in, go VIP or volunteer, participation is a pilgrimage and a rite of passage for cyclists around the world! Make it happen.

I bought a new RockCombo in 1989, but sold it quickly, as the concept was great, but the execution was poor. But I never gave up on the concept of “one bike for everything “. After several more failed attempts, I now have a Tanglefoot Hardtack- a modern day RockCombo, that’s much more capable and comfortable than the original.

I didn't hear about this until this morning when I was having some coffee and it was on the KTLA news page. I threw on some clothes and hauled butt to get down there! I wish I had known and I would have been there at 7am - so I didn't get to ride the whole route 😞 but I did get to ride on LA's first freeway for a while at least! 🙂
One of the things I noticed was that if every one of those bikes was a car, it would have been a massive traffic jam and we would have been going _slower_ ! So in my opinion this section of freeway (the Arroyo Parkway) has a higher throughput with bicycles than with cars 😉

Sorry I missed you and Laura on the route, Russ, but am glad you enjoyed yourselves and got to participate in this event before heading to Spain -- who knows if/when it'll ever happen again.
And, yeah, there were LOTS of cyclists and unfortunately some reckless ones who were slaloming through bike traffic. An ambulance was called for one cyclist, and another was injured and receiving medical attention on the side of the slow lane.

Both the Arroyo and Pasadena freeways are old and somewhat dangerous for cars to use due to their lack of emergency shoulders, short on and off ramps, and poor maintenance. Makes sense to use them for bikes since a few lives might be saved. As a teenager i used the 210 freeway when it was still dirt early in the AM before construction crews woke up. It made my school commute, from Duarte to Pasadena, safer. As it neared completion i could no longer use it. I used my venerable 3 speed Schwinn Racer.

Infrastructure is so important for safety and less hostile relations between cyclists and motorists.
As a cycle commuter and cycle delivery person (VeLove) I wonder if these types of events increase the level of hostility in the cyclists/motorists relationship.

Bikes allow so many people to use the road, imagine how much space this number of people would take up if they were all in cars.

As a regular cyclist in the LA area, one positive aspect I'm starting to notice is that motorists are becoming more courteous to me while on my bike. As more people ride their bikes at these type of events, the more they empathize with the cyclists they see on the road when driving. It's definitely a step in the right direction!

So cool this happened! What a great demonstration of how many commuters would fit in the same area if 'on bikes' compared to 'in cars'. When still moving 🙂
In 1946, 1956 and 1973 / 1974 in NL we had a few "car free Sunday's" were all car traffic was forbidden on Sundays. In 1973 this was for 10 Sundays in a row. I still vaguely remember (I was 8) how weird is was to Rollerskate / Bike on all streets without worry. It also made for some unreal pictures.
In later years there have been car-free days in several cities, but not on that country-wide scale
