- "Across the Vast, Eternal Sky" (Gjeilo) performed by The Central Washington University Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director), the Kairos String Quartet, and Ola Gjeilo (piano).
In May, 2013, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus, joining the choir in recording 4 of his pieces. This performance is from that session.
The other pieces were "Sanctus" for a cappella choir, and "Luminous Night of the Soul", accompanied by the composer at the piano and joined by the Kairos Quartet -- the resident faculty string quartet at CWU.
The final piece, "Ubi Caritas II: Through Infinite Ages", was recorded both in an unaccompanied rendition (how it is written and published) and in a version with Mr. Gjeilo improvising an accompaniment to the choir.
This was Ola's second time on CWU's campus. His first visit was in the spring of 2011 and yielded 5 videos of his music, a wide-ranging interview with the composer and other bonus material. It resulted in a DVD entitled "In the Moment", available for purchase at goo.gl/Xld0o).
As of 2013, the CWU Chamber Choir also has recorded videos of the music of Byrd, Gretchaninoff, Monteverdi, Muehleisen, Singh, Victoria, and Rautavaara on RUclips.

OMG! That is Ola Gjeilo at the piano! He is not just an inspired composer, he is a wonderful pianist. What a privilege to hear this music.
Thank you for pointing that out, I hadn't noticed! I'm going to be playing the piano part in a performance of this piece next spring, and it will be a useful resource to hear the composer's own interpretation of his piano part.
Yes! I thought that was him. How lucky for the students that he joined them. Several years ago, the choir I sing with did his "Sunrise Mass." What a wonderful experience it was to really live into that music. Loved it.

One of the most magical songs I have ever preformed. I was very lucky to prform this in the Michigan festival choir back in 2019 and it really is something to behold. This recording is amazing but if you ever get a chance to hear it live its something else.
I have the very good fortune to be working on this for performance with a large SATB choir and a brilliant string quintet on May 4 2018. We're also singing Luminous Night of the Soul. None of us can sing for weeping, it's so beautiful. What a gift to singers this music is.
Ahhh dear friends, this piece is so wonderful, so pictorial, so real, I can close my eyes and fly that flight, the sun shining on my face, eternity, plenitude, the grace of eternal life. Thank God for this work of art, bless the performers and the great composer Ola Gjeilo, for touching our hearts with such beauty... Blessings!!
Danke für Ihre wahren Worte
Lyrics:
Sunlight shines on my face;
This is my grace, to be Restored, born again, In flame.
When I was young I flew in the velvet night;
Shining by day, a firebird bathed in light!
Grey now my feathers, which once were red and gold;
My destiny to soar up to the sun
Sunlight shines on my face;
This is my grace, to be
Restored, born again,
In flame.
Sunlight shines on my face;
This is my grace, to be
Restored, born again,
In flame.
Do not despair that I am gone away;
I will appear again When the sunset
paints Flames across the vast, eternal sky.
- gorgeous!! Not only Ola's music but also the collaborative artistry occurring here - among musicians and videographers - is itself so inspiring! Kudos and thanks to Ola, Gary, the CWU Chamber Choir, the Kairos String Quartet, and to the wonderful video artists! You inspire the collaborative spirit and beauty therein!
I love the music by this composer. There are several contemporary classical composers I have heard in my elder years that I would like to somehow collect.
It’s so beautiful. I sing this in my concert choir and it’s so amazing honestly
I love it. It is one of the most beautiful song i ever heard
Ola is a star! Nothing less!!
I heard a performance of this in Nottingham last weekend . Absolutely beautiful.
Breathtakingly beautiful - a glimpse of heaven on earth
Soft gentle music to help relaxation and pacify thinking.
This is quite a stunning work, gorgeously performed. I love it.
Thank you, Ola..
BRAV0! 👏 Awesome job. Great sounding ensemble. From the choir to the pianist to the strings. Inspirational to me. Excited to be singing this piece with my local community choral society. My favorite piece this season. Beautiful piece of music. Thank you Mr Gjeilo.
What a wonderful piece of music ! I am "hooked" on this composer ! A work of art !
We're singing this for our high school's graduation, what a great song!
For some reason, this song makes me so nostalgic
My school is performing this song!! It's my favorite song in our repertoire. It just has such a brilliant color and sound to it. I love singing it

Most beautiful- goosebumps all the way!
This is such an amazing performance with top notch video production. Bravo to the composer, conductor, producer, and performers! You have inspired me to program this piece with my own choir.
Did I die and go to heaven?
I'm having this as my final music at my funeral
I sincerely hope you'll be able to hear it.

This is among my favorite songs ever! It's kind of a shame that I can't find a choral version of it on iTunes-Just sectional versions. Hopefully the real version will be available for the public to buy, though.

Does anyone know where I can find the vocals for tenor 1?
Anyone here because of the Sounds of Toronto?
Im super hyped after hearing this lol
No way.. it’s 4 am and I’m thinking about when I was in high school and my school choir performed this at sounds of Toronto ! I had such a great time there and the all the schools did so good
@@giovannarodriguesds7053 lmao the nostalgia is real
The women voices aren't blending as well with this particular group - there are one or two sopranos singing about 1 dynamic level louder than the rest at almost all times. Don't get me wrong I LOVE this, the voices are lovely, and I am a huge fan of CWU choir music and Ola Gjeilo!
What is this song about! What does it mean, born again flames? I thought the flames were elsewhere.

2:22...
The choir looks so bored and it honestly takes so much from the performance
i think if you close your eyes you might just have an entirely different experience...one of well, m-u-s-i-c.
+tlampful haha yeah, the music is so beautiful it makes up for it :)
They look like they're in that ethereal/mystical/deep place from the song that is hard to convey as "enthusiastic" because it strikes such a deep chord that is rarely shared... they don't know how to handle it.
They might want to cry but they can't because they're performing and think they'll be looked down upon.
Look away, Son
My school is singing this and I'm on the piano- hopefully I can do justice to Ola himself...
