And many of us have recently left major west coast cities because of rampant crime ( no enforcement allowed by police) and unabated open air drug use. The homeless situation is out of control as well. I’ve lived in California,Oregon, and Washington. Once beautiful and pristine states have now become dystopian nightmares. The exodus will continue until there is a major change in governmental policies and leadership.

@@flow2528NYC has always been up and down. When I was growing up in NYC in the 1960s, everyone was fleeing the city. In the 1970s it went bankrupt. Each and every time, NYC has turned itself around. People are fleeing it now because of the massive retirement of baby boomers. In the last year, once again, NYC is starting to turn around despite Covid and massive baby boomer retirements. I left NYC because I am retired at 67 years old and wanted to cash in on my enormous housing equity and live in a cheap place. If I was a billionaire, I never would have left

crime is a local problem. The worst cities in the US for violent crime per population size is Jacksonville, FL and Jackson, MS. Rest assure the police have more than enough power to do whatever in those states. Don’t confuse large population size with large crime. Look at crime victim per population. It is an eye opener

It would be nice if you realized that poverty and the high cost of living leads to homelessness, drug use, hopelessness, etc.

As boomers retire and my Gen X is looking for greener pastures these cities and others will continue to suffer. As the productive members of society leave all that is left are the users. The governments get worse and more and more corrupt. Why would anyone of value stay in such an environment? Have a great day everyone. 🍻

I live near Pittsburgh. Like most major cities, the cities’ gross mismanagement lead to mass exodus to other states or areas outside the cities. We have many growing areas in the areas/counties surrounding Pittsburgh/Allegheny County. Weather sucks mostly and you can’t change that, unless you like perpetual clouds/precipitation every 2-3 days. Very low cost of living in the old borough I live in, but there are other parts of the state that are very expensive with killer property taxes. My total tax bill is about 2k with a decent house/property lot.

Why does he think population shrinking comes with a decline in services?!
If the population is smaller then the need of services should also shrink.
The problem is the government never shrinks and continues to extort a smaller population to serve themselves.

Cities are poor because they spend more than they make by offering free services to everyone. Then taxes go up and people are sick of it.
America is waking up to these bad practices and they are moving.
    I blame bad politics.

Jerry: One thing that stuck out to me, was the “ Average Household Income” in the cities you listed. With these low average household incomes how can these families afford housing? Do agree that housing is a right, that everyone needs a roof over their heads? With the financial standards of only 30% of your income going towards housing costs which almost no one meets these days, what would it take for legislation to be passed mandating that housing cost is set at no more than 30% of after tax income?
Also who would want to live in Ohio now with the extreme MAGA party in control of the State & Congressional Reps like Jim Jordan?
