- Hey there, tomato heads!
It's tomato seed sowing time for many of us around the world, and while I've shown bits and pieces of my tried and true process, I have yet to do a video showing how I do it from Day 1....so here it is!!!
I have been using this method for several years and if you watch my other videos, you will see that my seedlings are always big and healthy come planting time! If you're interested in finding out how I do it and following along, here is my step-by-step process!
Last year I did a video on potting up the seedlings once they outgrow these initial cups.
You can find that uppotting video here: • Potting Up Our Tomato ...

I've been gardening for 12 years & this video was so helpful to me!!! Thanks ❤
I'm so glad to hear that!!!!
I have watched so many seed starting videos, but I still learned so much from you! I love the idea of planting halfway and adding soil as it grows. I live in 8b and have lots of ID and D tomato plants ready to go outside in a week or two. All of the dwarfs that I started from seed died, except 1 Tiny Tim and 1 Glacier. 😭 I just started some flowers and herbs today. Maybe I'll try another round of tomatoes with your tips and Fox Farm. Does Bootstrap ever do sales??
I'm so glad this was helpful! I always love sharing what I've learned with others so they can benefit too.
Unfortunately, I've never seen a sale at Bootstrap Farmer. I've never seen a coupon code and don't think I've seen sales. They are definitely an investment.
super glad to see the mykos in the back ground. Love that stuff
You and me both! I also just got the water soluble powder version so I can add it in liquid form to plants as needed.
Great video, you showed me a couple of things I have definitely been doing wrong, thank you 🙂
Thanks so much, Jerry! I'm so happy it can help with YOUR seed starting process!
Thank you for this video. I learned about the 3.5 Bootstrap Containers and inserts. I think I will kick the tires on that product as a result of your video presentation.
I know it is an investment, but it is one that you will thank yourself for. I kept some of their 10 x 20 trays and the 5" pots outside on my deck all winter long and they look good as new. The flimsy stuff just seems to crack so easily. And the fact that 18 plants can fit in 1 10 x 20 is a game changer!
I’ve never started my seeds close to the bottom of the pot and then fill in around each seedling as it grows (except for potatoes). That is really unique!
I’m telling you, it is a game changer! I wouldn’t say close to the bottom, but definitely halfway full. Closer to the bottom may have a tough time getting adequate light to it. But this method is hands down the best method I’ve ever tried, and your seedlings will have stems like tree trunks once they grow and are ready to plant out!
@@mrandmrstomatohead I’m thinking about trying it.
@@idahogardengirl942Maybe try it with some of them and do a comparison! I bet you’ll find it makes a difference! :)
Good video Lauren. Again, I like small details you include in your videos. Very good info. Thank you.
Thank you so much, John! I'm so happy you appreciate the information!
New subscriber here. I love tomatoes.
Hi there! Me too! Happy to have your subscription!!
Great info! I can't wait to give this method a try. You make it look so easy.
Yay! It really IS that easy! While many of us know to plant tomato seedlings deep when we plant outside, starting the burying while they are seedlings just makes them sooo much stronger!
Here is a video I recorded last year of my monster tomato seedlings.

Love all of this Lauren!
Thank you, my friend! Thanks for your support!
Agree 100% of this video have to try bootstrap farmer supplies
Absolutely! They are the best!
Hi love your videos just wondering Where did you
Get your lights from?
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you like my videos! Happy to offer helpful information whenever I can!
Which lights are you referring to?
The ones that are behind me as I’m showing my planting process are what I use for micro dwarfs most of the year and then seed starting for those not on my shelving system in my grow room are 45 watt tabletop grow lights by 3 different companies. They are really just the same light by a different company. So I will buy whichever one is cheaper at the moment. The 3 companies are Root Farm, Black Magic, and AeroGarden.
Right now, AeroGarden is the least expensive, at least on Amazon it is:
AeroGarden 45W LED Grow Light Panel - Grow Light for Plants, Includes Stand and Hanging Kit, Black a.co/d/79aYv0t
The ones on my shelving unit are 2 foot long LED grow lights we also found on Amazon after doing much research last year.
DYMOND BoostGro LED Grow Light Full Spectrum Linkable 5000K Daylight + 660nm Red Indoor Plant Lighting Fixture (2 FT, Black) a.co/d/a3nsiEp
Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Like #13. Great seed starting video!
Thank you so much!
You have a great set up. Very informative video. 🍅
Thank you so much! And thanks for watching! Hope you got something out of it!
Tysm!
You're so welcome!
You are precious
Why thank you! :)
I knew you would have a video on this , one less email. Thank you so much! Can I go from solo cup to 1 gallon grow bag. Does micro or dwarf change the potting style? If it stays in house does it matter when I start?
Im in Zone 6B Upstate New York… I usually wait until St Patrick’s Day to start my tomato seedlings. I found starting earlier my plants would be too big by Mother’s Day & I grow sooooo many not enough space.
This is why I’m staggering this season. Last year, the hundreds of plants I grew and started at the same time just become way too big with this amazing method we use. You can check out some of my videos from last season that show the size of these babies. Our largest “seedling” was waist-high…..way too large for a seedling. Don’t get me wrong, they were healthy and did great, but it is a LOT of soil to continually keep adding to the grow bag, and also a lot to handle when dragging in and outside for hardening off.
@@mrandmrstomatoheadPre-Covid we would sell 1000 average tomato plants at market. We have a 200 sq foot sunroom with shelving & it was very challenging. We wanted to have the biggest tomato plants at market & we did. But transporting that many not only was another challenge in itself, but the size of them ran a huge risk of damage. Eventually we started later, grew slower & managed with more reasonable sized plants both for sale & personal use. became much more Zen, less stress & better results.
Also before we learned all this, we had tomato fruit already growing on our seedlings which isn’t ideal. Even flowering isn’t ideal.
But love this video! We have the same passion for tomatoes & grow in the same Zone 6B! I subscribed. & your son did a great job with camera!
Do you struggle with fungus gnats with that soil? I love the look of those pots!
Yes I do. More so with peppers than tomatoes, but I do get them. Those yellow sticky traps work well, and I use the Zevo plug in insect traps too!
That's a grate idea can u tell the name and address for the company please .I just came across your chanel .I took use the solo cups but I use cup holders witch only hold 4 cups any size. Thanks for the information .
You’re so welcome!!! Glad to provide some helpful info for you! Bootstrap Farmer is the name of the company with the new 3.3” cups I’m using. I have the link to them in the show notes, but here is another link for you.
They ARE pricey, but their products last forever. I also love my Solo cups, but have to replace them every other year (sometimes every year.) Not a big deal since they are pretty inexpensive, but this new option will ensure I will never have to replace them. And being able to put 3 more plants in each 10 x 20 tray is fantastic!
