  • Excerpt from The South Bank Show’s 1979 episode on Rough Trade Records featuring The Raincoats in studio with engineer Adam Kidron, producer Mayo Thompson (of The Red Krayola), and Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis. “Fairytale in the Supermarket” was the A-side of The Raincoats’ first single released in April of that year and later included on CD reissues of the band’s eponymous first LP.
Music written and performed by The Raincoats:
    Ana da Silva (guitar, vocals)
    Gina Birch (bass, vocals)
    Vicky Aspinall (violin, vocals)
    Palmolive (drums)
Originally aired on ITV in the UK on a programme that also featured Stiff Little Fingers, Essential Logic, and The Normal. The version here is from Swedish TV and subtitled accordingly.

it is a shame that EVERY artist doesnt have video of them recording their very first single.

For those interested, the recording studio in this video is 'Spaceward Studio' in Cambridge. Stiff Little Fingers recorded there, as did the UK Subs, The Users and many others too. The opening shots show the view looking down Clarendon Street, there's a pub called The Clarendon Arms on the left (you can just make out the Greene King logo on an A-board high above the door) & then, in that turning which is actually Victoria Street, was Spaceward Studio, underneath that big house on the corner opposite the pub. The pub's no longer the friendly Irish pub it once was but it is still trading today. Spaceward Studios moved to the village of Stretham, just outside Cambridge, developed into a really high-end audio-visual facility & today do some sort of sonic work for British scientific & aerospace type companies. I was once in a punk band that recorded there.

I once had the pleasure of sheltering from the rain alongside The Raincoats. Ah, we were all so much younger then.

@@leopoldbluesky I think it was a short-ish shower. A small group of us (audience and Raincoats) sheltered under the bridge that goes over the Grand Uniion Canal, near Meanwhile Gardens where they played.

Just saw this posted here - this is me recording / engineering The Raincoats at our Spaceward Studios in Cambridge in '79, alongside Mayo Thompson and Geoff Travis. The write-up above is incorrect in mentioning Adam Kidron. You can hear the band saying "hello Mike".

Respectfully, that woman on drums grew up to be Sandy, Macarena and Hannah's mother...who'd have thought...
Paloma Romero was the drummer in the Raincoats on the first single and on the first album. She left the band right before the album was released. Kitty Daisy and Lewis' mum (Ingrid Weiss) became the new drummer and was the drummer on the album Odyshape and on the tour for that album.

@@islachira1603 Respectfully, I think you have that slightly wrong. Ingrid was drummer on parts of the Odyshape album, but other drummers on the album were Charles Hayward, Richard Dudanski and Robert Wyatt. I went to see them shortly after they released Odyshape and Charles Hayward was the drummer throughout (don't know about the other dates). And they were wonderful.

Oh FFS! This is heart-breaking! Could have been the most wonderful video, but ruined by the editing so the end result is like a masterclass in mansplaining.
