What type of theory does one need to know?
None, actually guessing notes doesn't exist pers se. You have to train your ear, however that requieres a lot of practice. That, and a lot of practice on an actual instrument too. Theory doesn't help much on its own.
Im telling from a personal point of view, i practice a lot and get nowhere, chances are you need talent too.
