Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship Europe winners

In 2012, Qualcomm Research established an innovation fellowship program in Europe modeled after the successful U.S. iteration. In 2022, 12 students from some of the top universities in Europe competed for four fellowships, each in the amount of $40,000. The four lucky fellowship awardees can use the money to aid their research in emerging technologies (machine learning, autonomous navigation, event-based sensing for vision, etc.) during the upcoming academic year.
Each student was assigned a Qualcomm researcher as a mentor, who also helped facilitate close communication, collaboration, and interaction with Qualcomm’s corporate research center. The fellowship winning students were also invited to the U.S. for a celebration with U.S. winners at Qualcomm headquarters in San Diego, CA.
To be considered for a Qualcomm Research innovation fellowship, students must apply, and the judging criterion is based off an innovation proposal that must include the following:
- Introduction and problem definition
- Innovation proposal and relation to the state of the art
- The one-year horizon of the project (even if the proposal is a multi-year project)
- The strength of the student for achieving the proposal milestones
In this video, we follow a handful of Qualcomm research innovation applicants as they present their projects and interact with other students from different universities across Europe. In the end, four students are awarded $40,000 for their projects: Stratis Markou (University of Cambridge), Dingfan Chen (CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security), Patrick Jattke (ETH Zurich), and Francisco Vargas (University of Cambridge).
