That’s a beautiful river. I was up there two years ago and wanted to go there but the area was closed. I can see why. Nice fishing. My daughter is Catalina Island leather.
Cutting the trail is really bad form. I hike the forks a lot and know that spot. Those hill sides are very susceptible to erosion after the fire so it’s very important to set a good example.
Hey Joshua. Depends on where you are. I live about 2.5 hrs away from the trail head. Usually leave 0500 and I’m on the trail around 7:30 and ready to just park and hike. Real fast pace down the mountain. Depending how fast you want to go. I made it in 25 min. 2 miles to the forks. 45 min -1:30 up. I usually do day trips. Long but worth it.
I can see you wading. is it possible to walk across the Kern there at the forks of the Kern? late in the season say late August early Sept? I would like to start in horseshoe meadows above lone pine in the eastern sierra nevada and hike to kernville. fish mulkey meadows, golden trout creek south fork of the Kern, the volcano creek stringers, drop down into the Kern to the forks of the Kern. I would like to cross the kern there and connect with the Rincon down to the johnsondale bridge and out to kernville. the only part I'm unsure of is that river crossing from the north side of the Kern to the south side of the Kern. do you think it's doable?
Hi David. Yes, very doable. Obviously checking water levels. Didn’t have a large snow pack so beginning of July, there were 2ft sections of ripples shore to shore.
Really good video, but if I could offer one critique: Country Road for fifteen straight minutes was a little much. I muted most of the video, and would have loved to have heard you guys fishing and the river running past instead of that tune.
Hi, I just see the video, and I thought the same....but I really want to go back to the forks, and I was very concerned about the after fire conditions, and that's 15 minutes really tell me exactly what I have to know, so after those 15 ending, I have to said thanks for showing us the trail conditions!!!!! Thanks man, great video!
Great vid, glad you guys had fun and caught fish! For future...would be nice to omit details on the specific location in the video & title. We want to keep this place nice for the future.
What trail is that and how far is it from there to the fishing spot? And is your car safe at a remote trailhead like that? What about wildlife you may encounter? You carry any protection?
Just look up on Google, forks of the kern river and you’ll find the trail and info. I cannot attest as to safety. My vehicle has been safe and is some distance from populated areas so you’ll be safe from thieves with no fuel to go that far. Now as far as vehicle safety from bears is if you leave food. Wildlife is pretty much everything from bears, mountain lions and rattlesnakes to birds and fish. Yep. Never leave home without protection.
Normally it’s lonely but it’s good to be prepared. There’s predators and there’s been stories in those mountains… look up Benjamin Ashley. He used the PCT as his main mode of getting around.
Thanks guys...perfect video I needed to see , I'm going on a first time Solo soon and it gave me an idea about the roads I'll be encountering.😎👍
Very cool btw, I am just getting into fly fishing and the closest river to me in the kern. Excited to learn
Best advice I ever got when I was learning was to leave the spin rod at home.
Good luck!!
How that fish went right up to the camera.. epic! Awesome vid.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, the fish gave a good show!
👏🏽👏🏽Looks so relaxing 😎
Looks like it was worth the hike. good time!
Sure was!
Yikes buddy......that water is HOT!

Pulling some nice trout in. Thanks for taking us along. Always been curious about this section. What fly were you using?
Large stonefly was the name of the game on the trip.
👍🏼
Hey brotha looks like a blast!
Is this a day hike? Or would be an overnighter?
Hey Joshua.

I really enjoyed the video! That second trout definitely wanted to be on camera! What wt rod were you using?
I normally use a 4wt out there!
Glad you enjoyed it!

And that sounds like an awesome trip you have planned out!!
@@smokinaces661 thank you! that was the only section I was wondering about. really appreciate your input.

Do you eat the fish?
Not always, but I do. Normally have several in the freezer so if I have some, back in the river they go.

@@smokinaces661 So what protection do you carry or should one carry? I remember having been on trails that got very lonely and it did feel scary.
It’s the law of the land man! Keep it on you!

Did any of them come up for dries?
Yes! For about an hour span they were coming up for dries. I was using 16 mayflies.
how long was the hike down?
Depending on the speed down, 25-45 min.
