The main riff to "Mama I'm Coming Home" by Ozzy Osbourne makes an excellent picking exercise in addition to being the foundation of a great song.
Played by the great Zakk Wylde, this acoustic guitar riff includes a lot of string crossing and quick hand shifts.
Be sure to tune your guitar down a 1/2 step in order to be able to play along with the lesson and the original recording.
In this Mama I'm Coming Home guitar lesson video you will need to pay close attention to the picking hand. The way to make this picking style as economical and smooth as possible is to always pick in the direction of the next string you are going to hit.
This type of picking may feel a bit awkward at first, but after practicing it a bit you will simply always pick in the direction of the next string you are going to hit without even thinking about it.
Another cool thing about this riff is just how great it sounds on it's own without any vocals. This always makes riffs like these a lot more fun to practice. :)
In the second video lesson I will cover Zakk Wylde's guitar solo for "Mama I'm Coming Home".
This solo is one of Zakk Wylde's most melodic. He uses simple repeated melodies phrased with subtle single string bends, oblique bends and slurs. This solo works perfectly for this song and is a great study on how to create a memorable solo without having to add a lot of flashy guitar licks.
The trickiest part of the solo is the very end. You have to perform a bend on the high E string straight into a pre-bend of the B string. Luckily, if you performed the first bend correctly, you should already be in position to perform the second bend. Pay close attention to this part of the video lesson and I will show you exactly what your hands need to be doing to perform that ending correctly.
    Enjoy! Carl..

Maybe this is a total noob question, but instead of tuning down a half step, why not just play everything one fret lower?

The entire song is played a half step down in Eb. You don't just play the solo, you play the entire song

Ozzy and the band went to the graveyard where he was buried and brought a guitar, an amp, a battery and some candles. They waited untill the moon was in the right position and placed the guitar on top of the grave and turned the amp on using the battery. Ozzy lit up the candles and the band started playing the song. After Ozzy completed the ritual, rhandy's ghost appeared on top of the amp, picked up the guitar, plugged the cable and started improvising this solo. Everyone that near that cemetery heard the first live performance of the song. Zakk Wylde watched what he was playing carefully and then proceeded to learn the solo so he could replicate it live. The band then hopped back into the studio and recorded the version you hear on the record.
      Edit: typo.
      I obviously made this up.
