  • What is cancel culture? Why is it such a big issue today? How can Christians uniquely respond with grace and truth? This video is a sermon I recently gave at Calvary Chapel, Albuquerque. I carefully define cancel culture, explain why it is such a big phenomenon today, and offer hope for Christians.

Dr. McDowel, I’m 57, I grew up hearing your dad on the radio, I’ve got his books, and I was introduced to you by pure coincidence on RUclips. This morning I prayed to God to guide me in mentoring a 19 year old pastor’s son who preached his first message last Sunday, a sweet kid, I then thought that I should suggest him resources to continue his growth, after that your feed appeared, I never knew of your ministry, I know you are the answer to my prayer. God bless you and your ministry, mightily 🙏🏾

Before rampant cc ..I had the boyfriend of my homosexual brother in law very nastily go behind my back to complain to my mother at my daughter's birthday party ..that "they" had been "not thanked!" (we were running out of time at the party venue ..I was crazy busy facilitating everything,... We were carefully making note of the gifts to organize to send thank you cards..but only saying general "thank you"s as each gift was opened to share).
After my mom told me he had scolded her..that she should tell me to not be so rude ..
I was flabbergasted. But out of polite family obligation ..I called to let him know I'd heard he had felt uncomfortable...
He was so very pretentious. Not humble at all. Not apologetic for hiS rudeness towards my mom .....he didn't thank me for my concern to call him ... He ended telling me I should not "shun" ...'anyone!' "
After that so puzzled me. Obviously I had not "shunned" them. I specifically included inviting them, and treated them no differently than anyone else.
Not to mention that I absolutely disagree with the concept of "not shunning anyone".
There are many people it is absolutely right and wise to "shun" ... criminals, pedophiles who seek to prey on my kids, liars ... Etc.
Ultimately it left me feeling very violated...and disgusted at his behavior.
Eventually I realized what was distasteful yo me was his prideful "entitlement" self focus.
That is the aspect of counter culture that is truly evil. The prideful "betterness" attitude that was first described in Satan when he rebelled against God's Authority.
That. Is what is spreading faster and faster in current culture.
Keep close to God. Keep in prayer for all these things.
    Please pray for me?
And for my now very prodigal daughter.
My husband left our marriage not long after that birthday party. He'd been having an affair..that I would not learn about until months after he left me. My daughter was close to the Lord ..untill she suddenly went towards the world and pleasing her worldly father instead of her Heavenly One.
Let's just all remember to keep each other in Prayer.
    🙏

Your concept of God is limited if you suggest this particular cult-like belief (and make no mistake, systems like religion ARE by definition cults) is the only way "God works through". If your litmus test is that he (Sean) supports your biased world-view, you are in fact limiting God and that would be the sin of pride.
I'm sure Sean is aware of this danger, and should take to heart to avoid his need for approval in social media to being honest, which I think he WANTS to be, but has a long way to go to get there.

@Jukka Salmelin I was going to ask if the video you linked was in any way relevant (maybe you just really wanted people here to watch it, although that seems kind of toxic to me), but then I realized something. God actually canceled a lot of people in the Old Testament. Like the time when he said the entire congregation had to stone someone because he picked up sticks on a Saturday. Or when he had a group of children mauled to death by lions for making fun of a bald person. Or when he struck someone with lightning for trying to stop the Ark of the Covenant from falling into the dirt. You could say that he's kind of the god of cancel culture, literally. It's also quite interesting which figures (particularly kings of Israel) he didn't cancel, though. Especially when you consider what kinds of acts he thinks are worthy of capital punishment (e.g. homosexuality, worshiping other gods, being disrespectful to parents) versus what aren't (e.g. rape).

And this is why I love Sean. Why does America hate Christianity so much? Because we do not go forward with love. We go forward with judgment, avarice, hatred, greed, and selfishness. The exact opposite of what Jesus calls us to do. I totally understand the hostility to Christians because it's deserved hostility. We've done such a horrible job that most people don't even want to have an open line of communication. We can hold our beliefs and stick to them, and we can also be gracious and kind. I believe in Jesus, but I am so tired with Christianity. I continually strive to be gracious and kind and I wish more Christians would take up the baton with this. If you say you follow Jesus then you need to PROVE it. This needs to be made an active part of our lifestyle.

@putjack, how exactly does one “love sin.” First of all, one needs to define what “sin” is. And then one needs to explain how loving sin results in the hate of people. I’m not clear on how that works. If one hates sin and loves people, then they are free to not sin and for everyone else that they consider to be sinners, they can mind their own business. That would be the best demonstration for the love of people.

    • @TenMinuteTrips
      @TenMinuteTrips 2 года назад

@@lynnef9330…If you’re struggling with loving people who you consider to be unloveable, then clearly you are not getting the message of Jesus’ alleged love. The “carnal struggle” as you call it, is a part of being human. Being “born again in the spirit” doesn’t suddenly make one magically immune from sexual urges and attractions. All it does is make one suffer guilty feelings about their attractions. Nobody has to act on their attractions but when shamed to believe that their attractions (and by extension, their sexual fantasies) are somehow “a sin,” you’re left with a church full of sexually frustrated people who occasionally act out. I would suggest that people who concern themselves with the carnal struggles of others, read John 8: 6-7 and then promptly mind their own business (with the exception of known cases of child abuse in which not only the law but also just good sense, requires one to report).

Unfortunately cancel culture is built into Christian faith. If someone does not believe and accept Jesus' teachings to be true, then when they die, God cancels them for not having the same ideas and beliefs as he commands and uses the fear of hell to gain obedience.

I appreciate this post. It was enlightening and engaging; however, I disagree with some of the points you make. There are many things I agree with you. Canceling people or being canceled isn't fun, and Jesus and his disciples were canceled sometimes. What I disagreed with is that sometimes no matter how polite or how much one listens, one cannot control how a person responds. Some people are angry because they are angry. We live in a fallen world. Sometimes saying the unpopular thing is the right thing to do, and other times, it’s not appropriate to do. It’s complicated, but I know that truth at times is truth, and it is like pouring salt on an open wound. The other person will respond how they want to. The gospel to some is
“an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. “ we just trust and pray that the Lord will help them understand through the process.

It’s had for many (including myself) to perceive and recognize grace, mercy and forgiveness when they reach boundaries! I think it’s because we have the idea that boundaries are symbols of rejection not realizing they are for protection to a physical, emotional and relational state of existence.
However, grace, mercy, forgiveness and even love has boundaries.

And also by "your" (speaking about most Christian dogma today by so called "traditional" perspectives) hate.
I want to be clear, I don't know if YOU personally love or hate others, I just know Christianity as a whole doesn't have a lot of "Christ" in it, and even Sean is forced to admit many, if not most, of folks he know know LESS about Christ than atheists, and far too many DO NOT act in accordance with "love your neighbor".
So you're kinda right - they will know you by your fruits, and Christianity as it stands today has much more idol worship and hate and magical thinking, than respect for Christian ethics.
This is why Sean is coming close to a grudging respect for "progressive" Christians who have Christ going for THEM, and "traditional" Christianity has a boatload of sin and corruption creating the need to find a scapegoat.

@@desnock don't judge a "religion" by it's abuse. Wanna know what Christians are supposed to be like, read the original sources: start with the gospels (Jesus' teaching) then the letters of Paul and the other apostles (new testament) admonishing the early churches for not following Jesus' teachings, and for a fuller understanding of God and why Jesus needed to die, read the old testament.
"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

@@craustin03 Well, of course you should judge a cult on its abuses. What an odd defense of evil!
You're not reading original sources when you read the Gospels, btw, scholars agree these were written long after Christ's life and so aren't first hand accounts.
      Paul never met Christ.
The reason for atheism is religion which hides its evil and pretends that people who oppose it are the problem.
Christ had words for folks like you: Pharisees, to whom He said to them when they said "but did we not do these things in your name" and HE (Jesus) said "get thee from me evildoers, I never knew you!".
If religion (in this case Christianity) is the den of evil, Christ says to discern by its fruits. Raped children, hate and avarice is only a short list of the kinds of evil so called "Christianity" has visited upon the world. So have other religions with bad dogma. There is very little Christ in your cults, and Christ seems to agree - it's in those Gospels you suggest people read, but apparently you haven't?
TO wit, what is the false equivalence of Christ and Paul? Paul was a sinner that never met Jesus, and you imbue him with authority? What would you do if someone said they met Jesus on the road somewhere and then promoted morality?
THINK, woman! God didn't suggest we think like fools, but to critically think, and read (more than just what confirms your bias) and most of all ADULT.

You did a great job of explaining how the cancel culture game is played by all sides. I just have to tell you that the rude and militant stance of so many evangelical Christians towards anyone outside their belief bubble has turned me off to Christianity. I used to love wearing crosses and studying the Bible, and going to church but the discourse of more and more born again folks has become so arrogant, closed minded, and vicious I don't feel like identifying as Christian anymore. That's unfortunate. However, please try to understand that Christianity is not like a group you identify with. In your comment, you forgot to mention the most important aspect, the central point, which is Christ.
I'm a Christian that had terrible experiences in different evangelical groups. It took me years to find real believers and a healthy church.
However, guess what never had changed? My faith in God and his Word.
Be honest with yourself. Why did you read the Bible? Did you find truth in it? Did you pray? How so that people being mean at you made you believe less in that was written?
I understand that not having loving people around us and not having sound teaching really can lead us to be cold hearted towards the spiritual things.
But I assure you, if you still believe in God, even if having very little faith, He can heal your feelings and your mind and give you peace and provide loving brothers and sisters. They do exist, though I'm very aware sometimes it's hard to find a good church. I have moved overseas because of that.
Please, don't be like still, waiting for something to happen. Seek God in prayer, read the Bible again, any text you remember that gives you hope, start looking for a church, visit all you can untill you find one that receive you well, just avoid those that don't believe the Bible. There's hope and grace in God but don't turn your back to Him because of people being mean.

I really do get the point about how inappropriate the woman's response was in not wanting to help the pregnant women but at the same time I don't know that I feel too badly about failing those women who are hurting when their response to hurting is to kill a baby. It's like if there's a guy who is a rapist because his mother abused him when he was a boy, is your first instinct to sympathize and want to help him? If the women wanted help to get through the pregnancy and give the baby up for adoption, I'd be right there for them. Just like with the hypothetical rapist, if he was seeking help for the childhood trauma before he raped someone, you'd be a lot more likely to be sympathetic than after he'd committed a crime. I feel sorry for the woman being in a bad position, but I don't want to be pressured into offering her support and assistance to kill an unborn child.

I like the general theme and examples ….. on the other hand, I have to say that main stream evangelical Christians are also really good at perpetuating their own cancel culture on other sincere followers of Christ by trying to redefine them as un Christian. Even though the person themself has had personal spiritual rebirth deciding to follow Christ and lives daily trying to followJesus Christ. ( for example members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) I know it will be said that you follow a different Jesus than we do, I disagree although there are different details and definitions the sincere connection and conviction to God is the same or in many instances more. So how is it ok to cancel this group, and try to remove the label of Christian they willingly choose. Just because evangelicals are part of a historical majority that gives no actual authority. I just think it’s important to take this into account when discussing cancel culture in general.

    • @andrewwoode

      Hi Stephen,
We as christians should be loving and gracious in our rebuke and corrections of others. This can can be an issue, I agree.
There are, however, false doctrines in the world. People may like Jesus as a person, but do not necessarily believe in salvation through Jesus. Or the divinity of Jesus. Or only one God. Or the soverignty of God.
Some believe in Jesus Christ, with wrong views on core christian beliefs. For example LDS - Latter Day Saints - or named mormonism have core believes that are not properly aligned the bible and Jesus Christ. With additional texts written after the bible that is viewed as more authoritive or equal to word, despite adding core beliefs contrary to it.
If one truly, sincerely, follows Jesus, they follow because he is the son of the one true God - who was and is and yet to come, with no other before him. Because believing Jesus died on the cross and rose again, we take up our own cross and walk as he did. Holding fast to the way, the truth, and the life.
If we believe in Jesus, yet do not believe in who he proves he is - or not believe in what he teaches - but instead follow doctrines contrary to both:
We are then not following Jesus. This affects the salvation of all the teachers and listeners of these groups.
It is biblically correct to not adher to false doctrines, or lead others away. As well as it is correct to critque these doctrines driven by people misleading or preying on others people. I do not have exact versus on hand, though Jesus and his apostles speak on this which I try and relate here.
One thing to say is this: If you were to read the bible
(note that some groups have changed/misappropriated the bible to match their beliefs in insincere versions; some good I believe are versions like the ESV, NLT, NASB NKJV,etc)
and you were not a mainline evangelical that believes in Jesus, would its teachings match the teachings you belief in?
Or would the bible match your group's beliefs at the core? A group sincere in following Jesus Christ? If so, then listen to the correction or rebuke fellow teachers are giving to stay true to the Word. If not, how so? Where did the contrary core beliefs originate? Is that origin more authoritative then the Word?
There are many examples of groups mixing biblical ideas - or people - and worldly passions or ideas. There are also people who show in grace (though others not so lovingly) the errors in a group's belief as it relates to Christ Jesus with biblical evidence backing these critques. This is not cancel culture. However, the way it is done can be an issue.
I would like to share a video that discusses several major groups and how they are different from mainline evangelism as you say, and why. I find it compelling. I hope you do as well:
Six Major Religious Groups Compared to Biblical Christianity - by Mike Winger and Allen Parr:

@@andrewwoode Thanks for the reply, and putting in he time, effort, and sincerity. I have watched the video. It is a good defense of positions that are not new but are misleading specifically regarding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The video is coming from a people who as nice as they seem both have direct financial interests in keeping their group happy, they get paid to preach a certain way, they did not come up with their theology by solo scriptura they went to school to learn that “correct” way of reading the Bible and they sell merchandise as well. They have no authority and their theology has over 1200 years of catholic theology mixed in it. Just because they say they reformed things who is to say that they reformed them correctly. Main stream Christianity still continues to have many debates and churches split from each other some ordaining or marrying homosexuals some not etc. There are institutional reasons that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are not accepted. Even though we agree on following Christ in so many ways. Yes we also differ but so do many other groups. What baffles me the most is how a group that has no authority somehow believes that they can define Christ in such rigid terms that were not even written down for hundreds of years and then exclude other Christians as not Christian. I guarantee that Jesus Christ’s own disciples and apostles did not define Jesus as a trinity or it would be in the Bible. So are they not Christians? If you are looking for sincerity and non bias maybe look to a group who does not pay their ministers. These men are highly educated sales people that mix sincere discipleship with their own interests. Just listen to how many times they laugh and sneer when they mention the other groups they deride. I don’t hear love. I honestly am ok with their trying to figure things out and with the good they do helping bring faith to many. That said, I resolutely reject the authority of any current mainstream Christian group as the ones that can claim to read and interpret the Bible correctly and call others non Christians, cults, or heretics. They may have a lot of things right but I can find fault with their theology as do many others hence there is no unity by just reading the Bible. But honestly I think people would be better off just reading it on their own then by just listening to another 500 year old theology that is fraught with its own issues.

If baking a cake somehow violates his religion, why did he become a baker?
You admit that he didn't consider it a violation of his religion to bake a Halloween cake, and that was something that WASN'T part of his normal produciton.
But he DID bake wedding cakes. Until the couple was gay.
    A wedding cake.
Nothing different about a wedding cake for Joe and Brain than a wedding cake for Meg and Luke. So the ONLY reason he refused to bake the cake was because he wanted to use his cake shop to be a bigot. if Joe or Brian had gone alone, and not mentioned their fiance's name, would the baker's religious rights have been violated when they delivered the cake and found out later? No. He would have baked the same cake either way. It's a WEDDING CAKE.
And then, when he got caught, he wanted to use Jesus's holy name as protection.
    Blasphemy.
So he got what he wanted, he wanted to let everyone know that he wouldn't bake wedding cakes for gay people, and now we know. But he ALSO wants us to not judge him for being a bigot?
    Sorry. Doesn't work that way.
Christians need to learn, that Christianity's promise that they can avoid all consequences for their actions, only applies in heaven. On Earth, we WILL look at their actions. And here, more importantly than "Are they Christian or non-Christian" we must judge "Are they a good person, or a bad person". The owners of Masterpiece cake shop could have chosen to be good Christians AND good people, but they decided not skip the good people part.

    • @Luiz__Silva
      @Luiz__Silva 2 года назад +3

      You got everything backwards.
First, it's not true that in order to become a baker one has to bake all kinds of cake. This is a matter of ethics and morals and applies to all sorts of professions. Christians have the Word of God as the truth in order to learn what is right and what is wrong. For instance, a Christian cop would catch a criminal because it is the right thing to do but if his superiors or even an evil law requires him to do evil it would violate his conscience and the truth.
You also got wrong the point about Halloween cakes. What he said is that the Baker would NOT bake those (or any thing that violates his faith for that matter) which makes for a pretty consistent case.
Yet your point of being "just a cake" is also invalid. Those were very special custom-cradted cakes. It was said the Baker had served gay people for years. The problem was with the message.
To be completely honest, you are proving the whole point of this video. What makes you so angry? A bake or whatever you think forcing people doing for you or someone else will not solve anyone's problems. You know who can help you and all those people taken over by rage? Christ can, if you would only trust him.
Now, I don't know where you are at as a person but I am pretty sure you would not want to apply the same standard you are trying to apply to the Baker to yourself. Being obliged to serve someone else at the cost of being sued and losing your job.
Also, you probably didn't listen to this message completely but there's no talk about not being judged or not getting the consequences of our own acts. I think you assumed such ideas because you presume the video was about some talking points against gays, leftists, and what not. You're wrong and that's good news.
You know about what this message was about? Grace. That's what you can find in Jesus Christ. Can you imagine being forgiven by all your sins? I'm not talking about not facing the consequences here in the earth like you said yourself. I'm talking about not facing the eternal consequences of each time you chose to rebel against your creator. And having peace of mind and heart. And have a loving family still on earth. There are many christians out there ready to help you and receive you. I'm very aware there are many false Christians as well so it can get a little confusing at first. But if you seek God, love truth, and out some effort one it, you can surely find true brothers and sisters and a healthy church where you can feel the love of God operating.

@@Luiz__Silva didn't say they had to bake all kinds of cake. But they DO bake wedding cakes. So there was no excuse for them refusing to bake one for this couple.
And they decided to use their religion as an excuse to discriminate against gay people. Really find that disgusting. Christians need to stand up and say that most Christians are BETTER than that.
Why would anyone want to buy from a business using their religion as an excuse for bigotry?
It's not cancel culture It's the consequences of their actions. They put their hate of gay people above their business and above trying to be good people. And in the process they smeered the good name of Chrisitans everywhere.
Not all Christians are bigots. And not all of them blame cancel culture for the consequences of their actions.

Can't say they're being persecuted for being Christian as millions of Christians manage to do a better job of being good people than them.

*BY THE FRUITS YE SHALL KNOW THEM*
Thanks to Saul aka Paul the Feroci0us W0LF in SHEEP'S clothing whom Jesus WARNED about, it's Christianity / Christians making a 🚩 *LIAR of Jesus of the Bible* till the end of times. The Bible testifies 🔥
      1)
✔️ Jesus: THE FATHER IS THE ONLY TRUE GOD.
✖️ Christians: NO. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (The Trinity) is the true God.
      2)
✔️Jesus: NO payment needed, NO Jesus died for us. Just repent sincerely and the Merciful God (THE ONLY TRUE GOD - THE FATHER) forgives.
✖️ Christians: NO. Salvation comes by the blood of Jesus and his dying on the cross
      3)
✔️ Jesus: Keep the Laws and the commandments if you want eternal life
✖️ Christians: NO. Eternal life comes by faith in the sacrifice of Jesus
      4)
✔️ Jesus: Do NOT neglect even the smallest laws
✖️ Christians: NO. Those laws are unimportant
      5)
✔️ Jesus: I was sent ONLY for the lost sheep of Israel
✖️ Christians: NO. Jesus came for us all, Jesus came for all of mankind
      ***********************************
Now I expect that you'll make a desperate run to point number 5 or any other than point number 1 because you pretty well know within yourself that the collapse of the false faith aka Christianity is gonna be far quicker if you went to point number 1. 😊
