It doesn't feel like the same card by making it a Pendulum, since it now requires you running a deck based around Pendulums, which the original has nothing to do with.
I look at it the same way I see the Five Headed Dragon retrain. The entire point and theme is to fuse 5 dragon monsters to make the ultimate one. The retrain should have stayed a fusion. It instead becomes a Link that doesn't even require dragon materials to bring itself ou

No Crush Card Virus, seriously!? I was genuinely expecting it to be #1. The card is the poster child of unnecessary erratas, they got rid of the ability to do damage for TWO turns, and let your opponent foolish burial 3 monsters. I'm playing a deck right now where I tried CCV, and my opponent nearly won from the monsters they sent to the GY from its effect.
I didn't see any mention, I wonder if they actually forgot about it for this list.

The stupidest thing is how they made the deck destruction beneficial to your opponent. And then to make it even worse, they made it optional on top of that, because we can't have those 1% of games where the opponent doesn't want 3 free Foolish Burials for some reason!
Seriously, as much as I understand it's broken to potentially deny your opponent a draw for 3 turns, this was not the way to do it. They should've done something like the old CCV effect, but make it so that each time you destroy a drawn card that way, your opponent draws a new card in return.

@@alphabrother6823 "Been away from YGO for a while so I wonder what could be even more broken than that" well I'm glad you brought it up, because I was wondering the exact same thing! lmao Just for shits and giggles I built an Invoked Shaddoll deck a few weeks ago and have been running test hands with pre-errata Future Fusion and it is wacky as hell. Shaddolls would be insane with it and the power ceiling only goes up as you get more and more meta with better decks like Tearelement and Albaz. Future Fusion to go into any Shaddoll effects from the main deck, or Fire Fist Swan and target 2 Wulf Lightsworn to immediately go into any Rank 4 Xyz, or you can send 1 Shaddoll and then Plaguespreader, Jet Synchron, Glow Up Bulb, or D-Hero Malicious in grave to start popping off with Synchros, if you open with Necro Fusion too the door gets busted open even further, a Hero player could probably win YCS with that and Miracle Fusion.. Like there is so much you can do with Future Fusion now, there is no way in hell that it could have come back without the errata. Five Headed Dragon was never the problem, it was just a good enabler lol pre-errata Future Fusion would basically solidify any Fusion based archetype as the tier-1 or even tier-0 meta for that format. Old Future Fusion and Monster Reborn on turn 1 is basically game-ending because of how much advantage you can rapidly generate. And my build isn't even optimized, I just threw together what I had lying around. Then I tried it with ABC and it was also ludicrous. Future Fusion and Gold or Silver Gadget is nuts in your opening hand, and even better if you play the Galaxy Soldier variant and get one of them too. ABC + Cyber Dragon Infinity + pretty much any other Rank 4 like Dweller or Bagooska. I couldn't imagine the havoc you could wreak with Cyber Dragons at this point too. It never even occurred to me to try lol would be insanity.

We're at a point in Yugioh where Change of Heart can come off the ban list and be experimented with, but the same can't be said for Brain Control which as you said is now unplayable compared to other options. I think it's especially uncool when the card becomes unplayable and just bad after the errata. Tbh I feel like it really depends on why a card is banned that matters. If a card is broken, it should just be retrained. If a card is abused in combos or with new mechanics in a way it wasn't intended to (like Grinder Golem), then an erratum is absolutely fine and feels like the best course of action. A special mention goes to cards that are only broken because they can be looped, because in that case giving a hard once per turn is absolutely the best option.
Konami just tends to screw up their erratas a lot. Dark Magician of Chaos and Firewall Dragon absolutely needed hard once per turns on their effects, but they went completely overboard and killed them completely with weird erratas on top.

Mahaama the Fairy Dragon was errata'd to have a trigger effect instead of a quick effect because the original card was able to circumvent the gameplay mechanic of only being able to activated 1 copy of the card off of its trigger. Because of this, you could potentially win a duel by allowing yourself to get hit by an attack and then choosing Mahaama's burn effect multiple times by activating multiple copies. I did this myself against an attacking Red Eyes Dark Dragoon, for example. There are videos on youtube showing people doing it.

Funny thing about Toon World is that in some the old GBA Yugioh games, it has the effect where you get the life points you paid back when it's destroyed even though that isn't mentioned on the card. Kind of surprised Exchange of The Spirit didn't make the list. OG Exchange was one of the reasons Makyura, who also could've made the list, had to be banned, because it could enable you to mill your opponents whole deck before their turn started. Current Exchange of The Spirit needing 15 cards in both graveyards to activate makes it almost useless, as somebody's probably already winning at that point.

It's worth noting that Treeborn Frog was a ruling change, not a card effect change (like the others in this list). The text was changed to better match the updated ruling.
All phase-specific Trigger Effects (without a specific activation timing) like Treeborn Frog's were changed to only be able to be used once per turn, which helps prevent loops. (Still soft once per turn though, so there are still loops you can do, especially with stuff like Samsara Lotus which has a similar effect.)

The ones that hit particularly hard was Raigeki, Harpie's Feather Duster, Imperial Order, Magical Scientist, Yata-Garasu, Sinister Serpent, Pre-mature Burial, Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, Mirage of Nightmare, Trap Dustshoot, Monster Reborn, Change of Heart, Witch of the Black Forest, Chaos Emperor Dragon.

There have been points where Konami has said you can’t write down notes. So that might have had something to do with it.

All non-corrective erratas are the worst erratas. Every single one. There is no bigger mistake a physical card game could make than to change the effect of a card after it has been printed, which both creates confusion as to which card is the "correct" one as well as removes the ability to play the original as it was printed no matter where the power level of the card may end up over time (see: Brain Control, while Change of Heart is now considered legal). Print new cards in easily acquirable forms; the old, banned cards weren't being used competitively anyway, and non-competitive players didn't care in the first place.
This is one of the biggest mistakes Konami ever made. It is erasing the legacy of the game.

But then they changed it so the boost only lasts until the end phase. My strategy relied on giving it destruction inmunity, with March of the Monarchs or Hardened Armed Dragon, and stacking the boosts every turn. Sometimes it makes me feel like they did it to target specifically me.

I always believe erratas that completely change the card effect is rubbish, because you can totally just restrict the card while releasing watered down versions of said card (to make money), and then when the meta evolved such that the older cards are no longer op anymore, take them out of the banlist. This has been the case for many cards (time seal, yata garasu, the new ultimate offering, subsitoad, triple tactic talents), many of which are successful, so I never understood why they wanted to errata others.

I feel like erratas are a good idea for cards that are not broken themselves but get abused, either through combos (Ring of Destruction was mostly fine but with Barrel behind the door it was an otk enabler back then), being used in ways it wasn't intended to (like Ring of Destruction back then was often used as a Self Destruct Button by forcing draws), new mechanics (Grinder Golem + Link Summoning) or infinite loops (Firewall Dragon, Dark Magician of Chaos).
The last ones are also the easiest to errata with a hard once per turn, while the second ones should get an erratum that makes their combos or unintended interactions impossible, like how Ring of Destruction was errata'd to no longer work with damage negation and can no longer lead to a draw. Only the truly broken cards should simply stay banned until they may be able to come off and maybe get a retrain for the time being, like Raigeki and its retrain Lightning Strike.
The main issue is just that Konami tends to screw up things a lot, which makes erratas in general not well liked. For example while giving Dark Magician of Chaos or Firewall Dragon a hard once per turn to stop their infinite loops was absolutely the right thing to do, they went completely overboard and just killed those cards.
Also sometimes they feel plain weird in their decision making. Treeborn Frog got a hard once per turn to prevent crazy interactions with the topologic monsters, but Samsara Lotus was actually banned instead.

It was pretty well played immediately in a cyberse extra link deck after coming back.
It just stopped being used generically.
I actually dislike ring of destructions' errata much more.
It was completely unnecessary at the time it came off (barrel behind the door+ring is bad) and I don't see why drawing is all that bad, especially given how situational it is.

    • @nicolaistuhlmuller8718
      @nicolaistuhlmuller8718 Год назад

@@IamGrimalkin the ring of destruction errata came a few years too late, but yes it did fix everything that lead to it being banned in the first place. Ring of Destruction + Barrel was actually pretty strong when the cyber dragons first came out, as those two plus a cyber end dragon summoned from cyber stein would lead to 8k burn damage, and well draws are the reason self destruct button is banned. While Ring of Destruction is not as easy to make a draw with, the fact that it's so generic and back then could make tons of draws out of nowhere as soon as someone gained serious advantage was just annoying.
The errata came about a decade too late, but they still show what good errata should look like: keep the main functionality of the card intact while making abuse and broken combos impossible. Back then Ring of Destruction was further abused in more ways, like using it on a weak opponent's monster to clear the board for a direct attack, or using it on your own monster after attacking in order to essentially attack twice.
Sure by the time the errata came none of that was even slightly relevant anymore, but still if they'd errata like this and react fast enough then erratas can be really good.

A thing missed about chaos emperor dragon is it's damaging effect is also different. The original card counted cards sent to both graveyards by it's effect, whereas the errata only counts cards sent to your opponent's graveyard.
To be honest I almost wonder if that alone would have been enough to balance it. I'm not that familiar with Yu-Gi-Oh's history but just plugging the numbers, that effect can burn for an absurd amount of damage depending on the game state. Obviously the field wipe is pretty absurdly strong on its own, but I think it could be argued that without the potential damage nuke it wouldn't leave the opponent in quite as much of a pickle. Hell, maybe it should be like ring of destruction and burn both players, it already nukes the field and hands of both players, making it damage both wouldn't be out of the question.

But if you are literally changing its effect to take it off of a banlist, just release a retrain!! YuGiOh is so clearly not opposed to retrains! So why they decided to nerf Chaos Emperor Dragon or Crush Card Virus and ruin their legacies is beyond me.
That’s the main reason I never got back into YuGiOh tbh. I don’t like the idea of paying for a card only for it to get nerfed later down the line. And I also HATE the fact that they’d be willing to nerf cards, but not errata, say, the Egyptian God cards to make them stronger, especially as the game evolves. It was a card that would insta-win the moment you triggered it's effect 99% of the time and now it's not even worth it due to the amount of investement it needs for the benefit it gives.

Especially if everything's unlimited (eg: not playing official rulesets), pre-errata Makyura is even more busted, getting something like three Sixth Sense off back to back with more draws on top and milling the opponent or burning them instantly, possibilities are endless.
In Painful's case, you also have the issue that the opponent chooses the card to go in the hand, so if they play things right, they can select the card you want in your hand the least and screw you over. Just because a lot of busted GY effects exist, doesn't mean that you are guaranteed to win because of them, not to mention plenty non-ignition effects will also miss timing. Again, extremely powerful card, just not number 1 by a fair amount considering how much counterplay it has.

I like the variety of worst erratas on this list. Instead of the same reason for each card there's examples of cards that would still be banned with the original effect, Would have been fine without the errata and a hubris of the errata would rein in the power enough to bring it back.

I could imagine killing Brain Control being about avoiding a situation where they have it, Mind Control, and CoH all at 1 and it's like having any one of them at 3.
Main alternatives would be banning Brain while leaving the others up (weird since it's worse than CoH), banning CoH (but it's the iconic one!), or banning Mind Control (which has a more, well, restrictive set of restrictions). The potential logic is there, if weird.

I’d throw in Crush Card Virus. Don’t think the original effect is as strong nowadays as back then. Also agree with CED errata, sad to see it’s effect neutered like that, even though I got sacked by it so many times back then 😅

Most of these cards got unnecessary erratas since they wouldn't be relevant even with the old text nowadays anyways.

How about a little buff to Goyo here to help lighten its load a bit?
    Current effect:
    1 EARTH Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters
_When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the GY: You can Special Summon that monster to your field in Defense Position._
    Proposed effect 1:
    1 EARTH Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters
_You can also Synchro Summon this card by using 1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner EARTH monsters as synchro materials. If this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the GY: You can Special Summon that monster to your field in Defense Position._

I genuinely thought number 1 was gonna be crush card virus. CCV was game breaking as a SJCS card, and heavily sought after when reprinted in Gold Series 1

As a mtg player, I appreciate how rare power level errata is there. The cards as printed are overpowered nonsense for eternity, and the classic broken formats can be revisted fairly intact.
That said, I know about the Elephant in the room, companion, and I say: lol

Honestly Toon World and Treeborn Frog don't belong on here, I feel. I wouldn't call removing a maintenance cost you have to keep track of how much you payed it a nerf, and getting a soft OPT is such a slap on the wrist compared to other cards that were butchered to hell.

Errata CED also cut the effect damage in half your opponent would recieve, since they will only recieve 300 LP damage from every card sent to the opponents GY and not both GY anymore.
Also couldnt old Night Assiliant return itself to the hand again, after getting sent to the GY? Since it just says any flip effect monster.
Since Konami reverted Armory Arm errata - they should do the same for Goyo Guardian, Treeborn Frog and Sinister Serpent.

I hate having to check for erratas when picking up past format cards. Erratas ruin cards and drive the prices of the correct versions up.

The Toon World change could simply be because they felt like keeping track of the life points spent could either slow down the duel too much or that it was just too much in general.

The Armory Arm thing isn't quite true. It's 2022 reprint didn't actually change its functionality back to the way it was. The ruling is the same, but the "in the graveyard" reminder text is removed.

I have to say that one of the silliest sets of erratas is Ryko. With the other erratas, illogical or otherwise, you can at least see WHY the errata happened. It's because it either is making a card go more in-line with its intended playstyle or is trying to correct for a broken card (whether or not it's necessary). Ryko's erratas are so excessive to the point it's like a dozen people at Konami all have a different concept of what he should be doing and they refuse to come to an agreement so they just randomly change his effect.
Also you missed Crush Card Virus. While understandable (it was errata'd around the time of the Waking the Dragons cards being printed and was necessary to nerf so it could be brought back for Doom Virus Dragon), the errata made the card so bad that there are videos of people getting screwed over by their own Crush Card.

    • @ShiningJudgment666
      @ShiningJudgment666 4 месяца назад

Ryko caused cards with optional floating 'when' effects to miss timing as its original effect resolved in sequence so cards with optional 'when' effects would miss timing due to Ryko destroying that card, the floating effect would activate but would miss timing as Ryko's self-mill would then activate.

If I’m not wrong there is a chaos emperor dragon retrain out there. Chaos Emperor, Dragon of Armageddon only sends cards from both players fields to the graveyards so its less oppressive, but also has other relevant utility.
