I’m an architect and I use pencils all the time (I’m from the generation that developed their ideas with a pencil and paper, not digitally); I have a habit of carrying a pencil with me everywhere and for me, this Perfect Pencil is indeed perfect! Clips into my shirt pocket and goes everywhere. In fact I’ve liked it so much, I’ve also picked up the rose gold and the sepia versions, both amazingly beautiful. Great review, covers everything about the pencil, both pros and cons!

Thanks much! I come from the same generation - and have this pencil clipped to my cardigan as I write this

Beautiful and ingenious design! but quite expensive for a pencil!

I bought the "perfect pencil" in The Hague, oh, 2004. Great pencil. Sharpener on my model is extremely good and is one of my best sharpeners. And yes, the pencil replacements are very expensive so I use the pencils sparingly. Have the ebony pencils too but I prefer the brown wooden version. The eraser is just OK. Excellent review as always.

I also prefer the brown ones. And the colourful guilloche ones are also really nice!

Great pencil. I have an older model, from the 1990s. It takes a smaller sized pencil, but not as small as a regular pencil. The new refills are too big. Would anyone know which Faber-Castell Pencil will fit the older model?

The reusable desktop pencil box is indeed nice at that price point. 🙂 Thanks for the thorough review. Seems to be the sort of luxury writing instrument that makes a nice gift, but it wouldn't make my everyday carry list. Not w/ having to have a proper eraser and sharpener handy as well. I'll stick w/ my Blackwing 602s. 😉

It definitely is a special item that wont be for everyone and for every situation, I guess.

    Thanks! What a cool idea.
Though, I wish there was a middle-ground between the $15 version and the $250 version.

I think there comes a point when pens/pencils lapse into silliness...I think this is one.

Not sure I agree with the generic framing of this comment, but yes: this is not a product for everyone (and I suppose that it also does not mean to be that).

You're talking about silliness in a channel where a grown man reviews pencils.

I would also add that if you don't like the pencils Faber-Castell makes for these, you can just use regular pencils as well. They will fit perfectly if they are about 8mm in diameter (just like the ones these come with). A Palomino Blackwing with a silver colored end looks really great with this cap, for example!

Ah, I did not know that the Blackwings fit in there. Will go and try it out. Thanks for the tip!

An added bonus is that cedar wood is a good moth repellant.

The problem I'd find is using it with any sort of abandon. It would be my special crossword pencil.

I think the original edition was better. The eraser was under the cap where the sharpener is now and the cap had a sliding ring to grip the cap to the pencil. It could be replaced by unscrewing the old one and adding a new one just like the new design, but I think they are different diameters.

After reading my original comment, I was talking about the eraser in the second half of the comment. Oops 😬

Thanks for the thorough review, Michael. How sad its called "perfect", but the sharpener and eraser are not up to the mark. GV makes high quality products indeed, but this one does not appeal to me. I do not intend to keep something just for asthetic reasons. It should be extremely functional at this price point. BTW, I use the regular pencils from them and they are indeed good.

In the coloring community, when pencils are difficult to sharpen or the lead tends to break easily, it is common practice to hold the pencil still and turn the sharpener instead when using small hand-held sharpeners. Please give it a try and let us know if it is a better experience. 😊

Cool, review the $12,800 version (with diamonds and made of white gold) but this'll be a great investment. I would buy it for those special moments but I will only use it to dot the i's :-D
    God bless, Rev. 21:4

Why doesn't Graf von Faber-Castell use a better sharpener on the platinum version? I mean, the one provided is horrible--especially at this price point. Honestly, I would never think of using it on these beautiful pencils. I always carry a Blackwing sharpener with me instead. It would be ideal if I could trust the built-in sharpener and not need to carry a separate one. GvonFC's decision to use this crappy sharpener for a high-end product just baffles me.

When you are rich and don't have something to spend money on than you buy this Pencil. I wanna say that someone who is going to waste money on this type of Pencil are the biggest idiots according to my opinion 🙄
