Welcome to the first episode of our Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT project bike build. Literally thousands of miles of testing have gone into this project, hours and hours of filming and a full night buried in a workshop. So we'd love to hear your feedback. What do you want to see us do next? Do you have any questions about the bike and out process? Drop a comment down below and let us know. As always, thanks for watching. Llel P
Great video and thanks. I was looking for this kind of video for this bike. I was thinking what is the best offer on the market (including all these features)... And realized with some upgrades this could be perfect bike for on&off road trips. My only concern is... Would it be better to wait for Yamaha T7(I think it would be much more expensive than vstrom)? What is conclusion, can we do an off road with this bike (off coarse not serious as with AT)? I’m tall 1.88 cm, what do you think? Do I have to replace standard with higher seat? Thanks in advance.
Not sure what you mean by 'its just not an adventure bike at all'... lets see.... Can it go off pavement and into gravel/dirt/grass? Yup. Can it climb rocky hills? Yup. Can it go through mud and water? Yup. Can it haul a pretty hefty amount of gear for a trip? Yup. Can you explore with it? Yup.... I'd say that's an adventure bike alright. And lack of personality? I never understand what people mean by this.... how can it have a 'personality' or lack there of? Like.... if you mean how it handles when offroad, then just say it doesn't handle well off road, although it handles amazingly. if you mean that when it is offroad you can't tell that you are, then wtf are you complaining about? you don't want to feel like you're gonna die going around a dirt/wet corner... The bike has loads of power, sounds pretty damn good even with a stock exhaust, has a really good hauling capacity, is highly maneuverable, has a pretty large availability of aftermarket parts for people who want to make the bike "their own", its freaking reliable as HELL.... it doesn't break easily when you slam it down either... I'd say its damn near one of the better bikes out there... Its cheap, meaning if you do manage to break something on it, you can fix it cheaply and easily. You don't have that horrible 'fear' of 'omg i'm gonna lose all my money cause i scratched the paint!' with it either. its lighter than most of the super expensive adventure bikes, and handles better than them as well. A bike that does nearly everything, quite wondrously well, is definitely a bike worth having verses a bike that does only offroading super well, or climbing super well, or cornering super well.... an all rounded bike is what you want... not a bike that can only do 'one thing'.... that's the point of an adventure bike....
Superb comment mate! I'm contemplating getting myself a V STROM 650 XT as a long term ADV motorcycle. Will just wait for the 790 ADV India Launch this year before I make the plunge.
yes but it's not flashy, it's not the latest thing, it doesn't have the latest tech, fancy lcds and a gazillion riding modes that you have to hack through to get the feel that you want, it doesn't make you feel important for spending more that what a decent small car costs.... but yeah, I'll enjoy my '19 650 XT to it's full extent and be happy that such a bike still exists today.
While everyone has their own personal preferences, the V-Strom happens to be my favourite bike. I think its grand that you selected it as your project bike! All of the upgrades seem to be spot on, too. Although, I'm not as keen in the choice of tyre. Especially when doing long treks on asphalt, pavement, or concrete. It wears you down. (I understand that your goal is all-round versatility, though)
I have a 2013 Suzuki V-Strom 650 Adventure and I want to make it more of a 50/50 off and on road back too. I have a lot accessories on it when I got it but there are a few more things I want to get and this video helped me out. Even though I live in Canada I should be able to able to get parts I need for it. New subscriber. Great video and looking forward to more.
I just bought a "second hand" 2000km vstrom 650xt. I added suzuki bars, central stand and Barkbusters handguards. This project is exactly what I was looking for. You are now officially my favourite RUclips channel. I can't wait to see the other videos.
I think what he meant to say was; This bike is the best priced ADVENTURE bike out there and it is superbly appointed for that price, so much so that we can afford put all this extra bling on it and still be under what other not so nicely appointed bikes cost... You'd still have to do all the same things to any of the other adventure bikes out there which would almost get you two of the V-strom by the time you're done outfitting them as well.
Just bought mine 8 weeks ago. Do about 1000km per week. Ride to work and have options of 100% sealed roads or 90% gravel. 60 yo without little off road experience. Ride a bit on shallow sand. That is the only thing that really bothers me. Plastic engine gaurds ok because i never ride on anything too rough- at the moment. Live in Aus so LOTS of gravel. Will upgrade tyres when these are worn. Bought it for the traction control and it handles two up well. Lovin your foot pegs. It does say Adventure but it also says Sports Tourer. Balance is pretty good for me. But no Simpson Desert! Cheers.
Looking good so far for a budget upgrade, at least its a good improvement on stock and without spending loads on suspension that leaves luggage, seats and possibly lighting. That said for a tight budget you could change the springs out and/or fit a valve kit, it would be interesting to see where you go with this.Maybe you could do a used bike budget build too? Oh and maybe a video on correct suspension set up.
So what have you added so far. I got mine recently and haven't; decided how in-depth to go with protection. I saw a reference for an Ibex? skid plate/guard that looked the best.
Great mods. Only thing I'd do different is the tire selection. I run Shinko 804/805's on my '06 Vstrom 1000, and they ROCK. On road. Off road. Dry. Wet. And they're MUCH less expensive! Tire wear? I get almost 9k miles on the rear (I ride aggressively on the street), and at the rear tire change the front still has more than 50% tread left. Wish Suzuki made those foot pegs for my Strom!
Not sure about the UK but in the USA there are left over Africa twins from 2017,18,19. 17’s are going for $8,000 ,18,$9,500 and 19 for $10,500 so you could get a way better bike out here for the budget of the bike and your project. I’d love to see you guys do a video on best left over bikes.. what bikes could you live with for discounted prices..
I would love to see you address the week front & rear suspension . Who offers aftermarket fully adjustable front rear with hi & Lo speed adjustments on the back . Bars & crash plate was quite nice ,& I really liked the bars with there hand guards .
Lovely! I think you HAVE to do suspension. If you want to go offroad, you need to have your suspension done or get hyper pro which is widely known. I heard you can reduce the dive on the front when braking and should have a better bike for offroad as well.
Stumbled across this vid and instantly clicked subscribe. Love the video work! Keen to see what else you do to it! Just picked up an 06 strom myself so getting ideas for mods for the old girl 😀
Would love to see the progress on this. Some have mentioned better suspensions and hopefully the ones you choose to fit won't cost a bomb. I personally would like to see if the v strom can be made lighter so it'll handle easier and fly faster too, notably to keep up with the bigger bikes on long straights. Cheers.
Well done! I appreciate your opinion and brake down of what the bike needs and how it feels. It's nice to hear from someone with your exp. I love my V Strom, it's an older one but, might I add to the "unbelievably easy to ride" it's also unbelievably reliable! I have done some of these upgrades to mine. Those foot pegs are awesome, going to look in to those. Thanks for the great video, looking forward to the next one!!!
Is there another episode coming? Or did you just loos interest in the project. I am asking because I really want to se stage 2 and the trip to the alps.
Any news on the next episode? This is an awesome bike, have one myself. Looking forward to how you all like the mods for long distance adventure travel. Cheers!
A great episode indeed. Please request you to work on the multistrada 950. While the 1260 gets an enduro the 950 doesn’t whist it being one bang for bike motorcycle. Request you to please consider.
This is an informative video of what you did to transform the 650 vstrom into proper ADV bike. I'm surprised you didn't do anything about the suspension travel especially up front. I'm hoping you have a video to show off how well it is off road now.
Hey, it won't be too long. Our original bike was stolen so we've had to start again. We have all the parts again and are rebuilding the bike next week. 😊
Great stuff guys. Looking forward to the next episode. This is exactly what I was looking for. This beauty just got launched in my country and I've been waiting to own one for a long time now. Hoping for some budget friendly suspension mods and Led setup.
just curious, why didnt you guys just tilt the stock handlebars/controls? it took me like 2~3 hours of changing it till it got fairly comfortable sitting and standing, but it's kind of a compromise situation (i kind of burned all my budget when i got my v-strom) but it was doable for the 3 years i rode that bike
With the skid plates, how easy is an oil change? Does the whole plate come off or is there an access port to reach filter? Really appreciate including links to the products you featured. All to often this is not available. What luggage and racks will you use for the trip?
Do seat, lights , horn and bash plate. As if I would ever want to ride a Vstrom between trees. Gravel roads are the extent of sensible touring on a Vstrom. A WR250r makes the most sense for touring and off roading. The Vstrom is great at what it was built for.
Hey guys found this project and my only regret is that it's such a small episode with almost no images from the mods you made. You refer all the modes but it's hard to perceive the final looks (at least for me). Also, my biggest question is, what can we do about suspensions without changing to much the sweet riding on road? The stock suspensions are clearly week for off-roading and they reach the end of its course real easy...Final question, when will next episode be out?Thank you guys...Subscribed your magazine by the way...thumbs up.
We will cover them more again episode two, don't worry 😁😁 We have a plan for the suspension too. Unfortunately our bike was stolen. We are planning to redo a new bike and finish the project but it will be a few weeks until we can.
OMG !!! That's tuff luck ...but facing the mods you made I can understand the robbers, I'd steel the bike too ;-). I own a V-strom 650XT (2017), yellow too. I'm eagerly waiting for those suspension suggestions too, but when you do please explain what the advantages are and disadvantages (if any) by doing those changes, because 90% of my riding is on tarmac...although it could be less if I felt I had a bike for that. Thx once again, Cheers.
I just purchased a 2018 Suzuki Vstrom 650 XT. I've had it about two weeks, so I'm looking forward to your future episodes. The following are my choices: 1) Motoz Tractionator GPS tires. These were awesome tires on my KLR, so I'm going to give them a try on the Vstrom. 2) T-Rex Racing Engine Guard 3) T-Rex Racing Skid Plate (You don't have to remove to change oil and filter) 4) Pivot Pegz Mark 3 foot pegs 5) Rox Offset Risers 6) ProGrip 714 Rally Dual Sport MX Grips 7) BRE (Back Road Equipment) Slider Tail Rack. This is an awesome tail rack that gives you lots of top box options. Easy On / Easy Off.
Great video! Very informative and well made. When is the next video in this series coming? I have the same bike, and always appreciate the selection of aftermarket parts. Thanks!
Can you throw some light on how the bike was stolen, I was mulling a purchase, and since India isn't too safe and thefts are in plenty, this would be of great help.
@@BrakeMagazine Thanks a lot, this happens most of the times.. I am using a Oxford alarm disc lock now a days.. Alas! Got 2 bikes stolen already, one was using the same method! Other I guess was loaded onto something to carry it.
It's all well and good and I can see you're trying to 'Rally Raid' the 650XT... However, in the real world, most of us who choose this bike are not going to riding hard off road on it. A few grassy and gravel trails at best. If we were going to be going seriously off road, we'd use a used Tenere 700 or a CRF 300 Rally.
Hey! I'm pretty much looking forward for the next episode!! Keep'em coming! 😁 Nice vid, I enjoyed it alot.. Curious to see how the mods really turn out.. and it's true, sometimes we really don't need to have a fancy mods to make our own ride comfy Subscribed! 😁
nice bike, nice piece. My 2007 DL 650 has had some of those mods. I prefer the PIVOT PEGS to anything I have ever used. The DL 1000 uses rubber mounted bars, so I am using the upper triple clamp. Production values, please mind your wandering eyes. It appears you were distracted by reading cue cards that were too far from the camera. You looked stage right and over the camera a bit too much. Some of your edits of seated talking were easily noticed. I'd encourage you to retake that section as a whole, not splice in a 2nd take, not without a change in angle or view. Keep it up, bring us more. I want to see the bike after the trip to the Alps, ridden hard and put up wet.
i actually own one , exactly the same in yellow.....it s by far the best bike i ever had.....i m in love with it..... for reAL;;;; GO TRY ONE it s an awesome bike
Don't want to sound like a dick, but SW-Motech parts are just as good and cheaper than the ones mounted now. For those still in search ;-) Cool project - when can we expect part 2? I'm in the process of buying a Suzuki V-strom 1000 ABS and plan to build it up like this, too.
Nice video and looking forward to the rest of the series. but it sounds like you’ve spent too much time with your german friend calling this is a budget build. Ive never had a go at a strom. Everyone who has swears by them. Whenever i see the new model it looks heavy and wide. But maybe it’s not?
great idea, awesome footpegs but camera man is very annoying. I agree standing position was very bad on this bike, hope these changes will improve it. Beside that great machine.

Awesome Stuff.

Extremely well said brother. It's absolute VFM in its segment.
To right for an extra £2500 you might as well buy a ktm or used gs?
The V-Strom 650 is a very underrated bike that deserves much more sales.

When's the next episode coming? Really enjoyed the first one and have been modding my own '18 650XT in similar fashion. Cheers!

Thank you guys for doing this! Just bought a new V-Strom and was looking for a project like this. Great first part! Can't wait for the next one:)
So did I.
Wooo. No problem!
Looking forward to the next episode... I have an old GS and am considering a new one of these 👍👍
That blue jacket looks sick. I'll take it, thanks.

Going through pretty much the same journey for my Kawasaki Versys 650. Can totally relate!

When will Ep. 2 post?

From the list you provide my first reaction is to get an Africa Twin Honda !

Any news on the next episode? This is an awesome bike, have one myself. Looking forward to how you all like the mods for long distance adventure travel. Cheers!
I did Europe Tour in 2018 on old Dl650A 2010 . #60days20000km with passenger . was good enough with no drama, just chain lube, oil and filters.
Wonderful motorcycle 🏍😍👌
Is it possible for the beginner to

Tariq Abbadi Yes, definitely 👍🏼
This is a really good idea - nice presentation, great stills, good ride footage - very nice! Much thanks!

It's coming soon.
At this stage I'd say brexit will be complete before part 2 of the video 😅
Ha, 5 months later and counting......no brexit no part 2.
If they get the deal through its just the start of Brexit, 25 years of trade negotiations to follow and we still won't have V-Strom 650 XT ep2
Y have u not continued this series
I agreed with all the mods you done so far. Me too waiting for Esp 2. Looking forward to see what luggage system and suspension setup you put in.

When pt2 coming ?
Is there going to be a follow up on this I wonder or will it be put back for some other time with the dakar stuff going on.

Which mid-segment ADV would you recommend instead of the V-strom 650 which would not need too many mods? Of course, at a similar price point.
240 pounds for foot pegs is insane
just curious, why didnt you guys just tilt the stock handlebars/controls? it took me like 2~3 hours of changing it till it got fairly comfortable sitting and standing, but it's kind of a compromise situation (i kind of burned all my budget when i got my v-strom) but it was doable for the 3 years i rode that bike

Still waiting. I saw a reply from 3 months ago that it was 4 weeks away so can only assume the project got canned.
With the skid plates, how easy is an oil change? Does the whole plate come off or is there an access port to reach filter? Really appreciate including links to the products you featured. All to often this is not available.
What luggage and racks will you use for the trip?
The sump guard has to come off for an oil change but it's not super complicated to do 😊
Luggage, you'll have to wait and see 😏
Update video- Time lapse oil change, all gear in place to start....... Lets see just how not complicated it is. Cheers!
Maybe 😏
Take a look at the T-Rex Racing Skid Plate. The skid plate does NOT have to be removed to change oil and oil filter.

I'm eagerly waiting for those suspension suggestions too, but when you do please explain what the advantages are and disadvantages (if any) by doing those changes, because 90% of my riding is on tarmac...although it could be less if I felt I had a bike for that.
Thx once again,
Cheers.
I just purchased a 2018 Suzuki Vstrom 650 XT. I've had it about two weeks, so I'm looking forward to your future episodes. The following are my choices:
1) Motoz Tractionator GPS tires. These were awesome tires on my KLR, so I'm going to give them a try on the Vstrom.
2) T-Rex Racing Engine Guard
3) T-Rex Racing Skid Plate (You don't have to remove to change oil and filter)
4) Pivot Pegz Mark 3 foot pegs
5) Rox Offset Risers
6) ProGrip 714 Rally Dual Sport MX Grips
7) BRE (Back Road Equipment) Slider Tail Rack. This is an awesome tail rack that gives you lots of top box options. Easy On / Easy Off.
Aaaaamazing guys!!! :D Great project and I bet... great fun too! :)
It's been really fun so far!
What’s the part number of the foot pegs please
will this set up work on a sv 650?
cant wait for the next one!!! Just got yourself a new subscribed :D
Thanks Jean 😁
Nice 🙂👊🏼
Spend 10K on a brand new V-Strom + upgrades or buy a second hand GS?
Hi, what is the name of song/interpret? Thanks. Update: Digital age, Shazam found it :) Squiid - Atmospherica
4 months later - when is Ep. 2?
I'm only asking because I loved the video and really want to see more! :D
It's coming. Our original bike was stolen so we're rebuilding a new one 😊 it'll be about four weeks.
I'm sad to hear that happened, but I'm looking forward to the video! 😁😁
Still patiently waiting
Where can I contact whoever edits the videos?
I intend to hire him
yourang@brake-magazine.com. I edit and film all the videos.
@@BrakeMagazine Muchas gracias!!!!!
The VStrom 650 is the Subaru Forester of motorcycles.
No Ep2 then?
Great video! Very informative and well made.
When is the next video in this series coming? I have the same bike, and always appreciate the selection of aftermarket parts.
Thanks!
Good video!
Thanks 😊
Any updates on the second episode. Its been two months already
It has. Our original test bike was stolen so we are having to start the build again.
It will be soon. 😊
Can you throw some light on how the bike was stolen, I was mulling a purchase, and since India isn't too safe and thefts are in plenty, this would be of great help.
They broke the steering lock and pushed it down the road using another bike.
@@BrakeMagazine Thanks a lot, this happens most of the times.. I am using a Oxford alarm disc lock now a days.. Alas! Got 2 bikes stolen already, one was using the same method! Other I guess was loaded onto something to carry it.
Do a review on the new triumph tiger 800 Xca please !!
Yes, okay :D
@@BrakeMagazine really would like to know your take on that bike !! I've seen a lot of people saying you can't actually take it offroad !! Thanks:)
Oh really? We'll get one and review it :)
What happened to ep 2?
Hey! I'm pretty much looking forward for the next episode!!
Keep'em coming! 😁
Nice vid, I enjoyed it alot..
Curious to see how the mods really turn out.. and it's true, sometimes we really don't need to have a fancy mods to make our own ride comfy
Subscribed! 😁
Thanks for the sub Jacob 😁
nice bike, nice piece.
Thanks for the feedback. 😊
i actually own one , exactly the same in yellow.....it s by far the best bike i ever had.....i m in love with it..... for reAL;;;; GO TRY ONE it s an awesome bike
I traded my V-Strom one of the worst mistakes I made. Such a useable bike to do whatever you wanted to do, great bike for the price.
E.T.A of Ep.2..:)
Where is episode 2?
Don't want to sound like a dick, but SW-Motech parts are just as good and cheaper than the ones mounted now. For those still in search ;-)
Cool project - when can we expect part 2? I'm in the process of buying a Suzuki V-strom 1000 ABS and plan to build it up like this, too.
What's the music on the video?

Nice video and looking forward to the rest of the series. but it sounds like you’ve spent too much time with your german friend calling this is a budget build.
Ive never had a go at a strom. Everyone who has swears by them. Whenever i see the new model it looks heavy and wide. But maybe it’s not?
great idea, awesome footpegs but camera man is very annoying. I agree standing position was very bad on this bike, hope these changes will improve it. Beside that great machine.
