Great video. I recently picked up a (discontinued) Eterna Les Historiques 1935 and love it. There's some decent variety to their dial and hand designs and they're relatively inexpensive.
Funny enough, I might be different from most but find the 'small' version of the Baume&Mercier Hampton really well executed, I like these applied indexes Vs all the others which are just printed.
I have 2 mid-century rectangular watches, one by Elgin, the other Waltham. I consider them definitely dressier than my other watches, despite their modest origins. All of these in your video are truly handsome watches. Thank you!
I appreciate to have an online resource where someone so knowledgeable just talks openly and passionately about vintage watches…. Now I don’t know when will that be, my friend, but I’ll buy a watch from you, hopefully an Omega Seamaster Deville with the blue dial… Until then, I’ll keep lusting over the new arrivals… Thanks!!
@@TimelessHistoryChannel it’s good to have you back here. I’m always taking a look at new arrivals to the store… I hope whatever you had going on got resolved. Much success to you!!
The Longines is beautiful. That’s the winner on the modern. Of the three vintage, the Rolex takes the literal crown. I love Omega, but those lugs on the Rolex are fantastic.
Hi Omega Enthusiast, stumbled on this video, and really enjoyed it, loved your selection. That Omega near the end with the brown leather strap and subdial was amazing. Loved that the watch face was tilted towards the wearer. Do you have the name & model-number for that Omega? (keep up the great work)
Thank you so much for the comment. I recently uploaded two episodes on these 1930s and 40s Omega rectangular watches. Here is episode 2: ruclips.net/video/i4X_esm_Qjk/видео.html I will have more info on the piece you're asking about in episode 3. So stay tuned for that. 🙂
The JLC is the most iconic, and also the watch I would like to buy next (if, and when I can afford one!). I remember seeing one of these worn by the actor John Mills in a WW2 film about miniature submarine warfare where he was flipping over the watch while timing when his demo to the senior navy man ( played by James Roberts Justice) who told him to ‘stop messing with that wristwatch’ just before the explosive demonstration took place in film.😊
Thank you for the comment. I didn’t bother to include a JLC reverso or Cartier tank as they are too popular already and way over many people’s budget. I do own a nice 1935 Reverso. Love it!
Do you know Frederique Constant Carree? Some are automatic ("and even open-hearted") and apparently more affordable than the Baume & Mercier (although the B&M is the most beautiful of all in my opinion). Well, there are so many watches that it wouldn't be possible to include them all here. Congratulations on the choices.
Thank you for a very interesting topical review focused on rectangular watches. I personally do not understand how they generally designed these odd round things. In my opinion, any watch should be shaped square, rectangualr, or tonneau like. For the shape addicts like me, would like to do some more remarks. The rectangular shape of the watch is more complicated technically, due to its design. In low budget it usually predicts a small automatic caliber inside which is less durable in wearing practice! With square shape - the story is less complicated, the caliber is bigger. Unfortunately, the line XXL (39mm +) are less popular with these manufactures mantioned (but Oris Limited editions and Dolce Vita Chronograph XXL used to be an exception) , still some of the luxury brands like Cartier, Jager, Ulysse, Franck Muller, Roger Dubuis, Daniel Roth, Parmigiani, IWC, Breitling, Glashutte, Richard Mille produce bigger tonneau watches. Here is the choice of "not round items" from my private experience of wearing, and I do strongly reccomend this exotic list to tonneau edicted fans to be considered: Patek Pagoda edition, Cronoswiss Imperator, Rolex Prince, Cartier Santos XXL, Omega Byzantium Square (34mm), Girrard Perregaux Vintage 1945 XXL, Perellet Double rotor, Glasshutte Sixties, Tag Heur Monaco, Hermes Cape Cod, Zenith Port Royal. More exotic and more affordable low budget watchet in my opinion: Maurice Lacrouix Pontos, Nomos Square, Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente, Hysek Killada, Van der Bauwede Magnum, Dubey & Schaldenbranbrand Coupe City, W.Gabuis Transmatic, Cvstos Challendger, Edox Class Royal, Bell&Ross Desert Type, Formex Chronograph, Jean Richard TV Screen, Wyler Code Geneve, Epos Doctor's Watch. To be more precise, rectangular watch shape is called professionally "CARREE". So, be straight. GO CARREE).
I have a 6 1/2" wrist and modern form watches - men's - are invariably ungainly. Sinn has a reasonably-priced, rectangular model (243 Ti S) - nominally ladies' - with some good specifications. (As an aside, thanks for featuring vintage models suitable for the man of small-wrist. We're a huge demographic long shunned by manufacturers and trend-setters). I'm sure I could get away with a sober-colored Rolex Date-Just 31mm without coming across as effiminate, but that's a different price level.
Thanks! The Reverso is definitely my favourite as well. But similar to the Cartier Tank, I won't need to mention it as everyone probably already know about it. haha. I do own a vintage Reverso from 1935. Love it!
You have forgotten the king of rectangular watches Cartier tank 2)patek Phillipe 3) Moritz Grossman 4) Seiko 5) citizen 6) Rado all the above mentioned watches are great please add them to your collection thanks
@@tfpp1 Yeah, because once you include quartz watches, there are many choices. The thing about today's watchmakers is many will no longer strip down a quartz movement to fix. Instead, they buy a new replacement for $5-$25 in most cases and spend 5-10 swapping. Some watchmakers will not bother swapping the original stamped bridge over, so now you have a quartz watch with a replacement movement. But at the end of the day, always pay for something you love and within your budget.
Actually looking for a rectangular one. The Cartier with that nipple on the crown always bugged me. Out of this selection Longines and Oris stand out for me.
Thank you for the comment. I didn't bother to include any Cartier or JLC because these two brands are much too popular with their Tanks and Reverso models.
JFK is a limited edition watch that you can't buy anymore. So it would not make sense for me to use it in this video. And it is good to explore other brand names as well. We all know Omega makes great watches. :-)
Rectangular watches have come and gone out fashion so many times. I remember the Rados being a hit in the 90s. Now it's a hit again because of the smart watches. I don't consider them to be a worthy investment.
Great point! I have seen some in person. The appearance is one thing, but what's inside is just as important. The primary purpose of wearing a watch is to tell time, so the mechanism better be good inside. That said, that is why I have not created another modern watch review video before for the same reason as your comment. However, do expect a new video as I review a modern Nivada Grenchen watch. The company is kind enough to send me one of their watches to do a review on. I promise it won't disappear you this time. 😉
As a female viewer who likes watches my favorite is Oris because will be fitting on my small wrist, the second is the Dolce vita. Thank you

The most pleasing one for under 2500 has got to be the Dolce Vita with the silver dial, blue hands, and Arabic numerals. I'll acquire one soon.
I like the classic vintage looks of these watches.

I've got the Hamilton boulton, manual wind, it keeps great time, I really like it too!
Nice!
The dolce from Longines would be my pick. Nice video. Keep it up
Well presented, thanks for sharing.
Well done 👍.
Rotary makes an affordable Reverso Duo face watch. I'm thinking of saving up for one.
Oh Yeah, those are really nice too! The Revelation I believe that's what they are called.
Longines with the sector dial is the best looking.

I do! I actually had one in full set many years ago. It's a beautiful and classy looking timepiece. And cost much less than other brand name pieces.
The “My Way” from Bulova is an automatic watch, MSRP $550
I would suggest the Michel Herbelin Art deco manual wind while still available since it is limited edition
The dolce vita is very clean
I like the B and M the best.

There's also the Rotary Cambridge for around $250, and the Seiko PSU880 (I think that's the number) for like, $150.

For my money it's the Longine, and it's a different watch on every strap.

Dole Vita..then Omega
The Vario from Singapore at 645$ US?
Their flip watch is not mechanical though. It’s a quartz.
