Great presentation Jan. I wasnt very exciteted about this Benidorm Festm1.
Very luke warm and uninspiring.
I hope tonite they hit Topnotch. Bamos ala nocthe!!
My fav at BF 1 was Angy. Though they have to fix her vocals indeed.
Staging looked cool. Creepy in a less obivous way than from Bambie T.
Hi, Jan, appreciate your work, just a few comments that can help you understand results.
RTVE claims there was a sound mixing issue: sound came good out of the set but signal got distorted when sent to TV and they claim to have corrected that. People in the crowd say vocals were not horrible at all.
Demoscopic vote is a poll made out of a pool of people meant to replicate Spanish society. RTVE low viewing figures and the high cost of premium calls and SMS in Spain (2€ and 1,45€) mean televote is really low and results can be distorted (only 12,500 votes, 57% of which were for Mantra... so basically with 2,500€ you can buy your first place in televote), so they use demoscopic jury to correct that.
Angy Fernández started as an emo singer then stuck to acting and she is making a comeback as a singer for Benidorm, so there is a narrative behind the staging explaining why a Spanish televote may value this more than a European fan watching it.
And regarding how jury could give so much value to Nebulossa... Well, the jury is there, surrounded by the crowd, and they may get carried away by the atmosphere. Did I say "may"? Their spokeswoman even admitted that they are seeking the best show for Eurovision and that they would take into account how it was received by live audience... I think it's a mistake, but they were quite open about it and it may explain why Nebulossa won by a landslide. Did you hear how the crowd did the chorus?
Hey! First of all, thank you for your time making this amazing comment!
I will go step by step - the sound - it could be mixed wrongly or so - but those are just the sound layers. Vocal is still the same vocal. And I don't like using this argument too often, but I am in the industry for more than 15 years, and I feel good in judging this :D haha. So that's why for me as a producer is not rly important anything what crowd in arena says as the main point is television.
Demoscopic - it actually make sense as a counter balance. This is kinda even funnier when you imagine, Eurovision has only fan vote in the semifinal. No balance at all.
I like Angy's song very much. One of my TOP 5 this year from Benidorm. Watch video reaction we did with Eli together :) I just feel it is undone and if something needs to change but according more to bigger Eurovision if she wins, is vocals. Even it might be ok, I think Spain aims as high as possible. Also that counts from some staging details but overall I like it.
Oh, so jury is judging on live stage presence and not the television output? This is kinda strange but why not. I have no bad feelings about it as I dont rly care who will win. Trying to be as neutral as possible. So counting back with the crowd - how this is relevant? There can be majority of her fans, there can be a huge respect, it was also playing the gay string note a bit... but the atmosphere they created is great. This is very important also for television to feel.
Again thx for your comments as it pushed me to think :)
Best
J
@@JanBors I watched your reaction video, just first time commenting! :D
Juries have headphones and TV screens, but they are on site, not in a different room, just to be clear. A big difference compared to ESC.
Anyway, tonight's semi has always been tipped to be better and the one where overall winner may be seen.
I cannot wait, there are other very good songs!
I did hear the boos, and couldn't agree more
Angy bad vocals? 😂😂 She was the best of the night in terms of voice in spite she wasn't my fav before the show. The sound in BF is not good as you said. Every years have a lot of problems and organization has to confirm it and said thet had to cheek it and change it😂
I am kinda very sensitive on that matter and it was not as great as it needs to be. Even they probably had some issues, I am not sure they are rly present in the youtube videos already as this feels absolutely ok. The vocal qualities are just questionable, for sure she at least struggled to keep the tones 100%. You can say this wheter technicality, when there is drops in tonality. Anyway, it does not matter. This can be a professional reaction or from pro, but still its just an opinion after all :)
Angy was good for which was presented that night. I think she seemed good to us because most of the acts before her were really not good at all. Angy was not perfect, but she was the best of the night. You can picture how the other ones were😅😅
@@avg18 hahaha, I dont complain about it. Good thing after the first live experience, everything can improve and finals can rly be spectacular!
Hi mate. I remember your comments about Blanca last year. You didn't connect with the song but I liked your argumentation and the tone of respect towards the artists.
Yesterday the final scoring was as messy as most the show. Some insights for you:
Demoscopic vote consist of about 300 people who are selected as a sample covering different ages, sexes and locations around the country. It is used as a counterweight for possible bias created by local fandom collapsing the televote. That was the case with Mantra. The won the televote in a landslide (+50% of the votes with 12% for second place!) It suggests some kind of avalanche vote happened as reactions on social media or forums were not in their favour after their act. Nobody was expecting them to qualify or win the televote. Maybe they have a younger fandom who are more committed to vote using the phone, maybe something different happened, I don't know. The outcome for Nebulosa was also unexpected, because everybody thought they will win the televote but the juries might punish the vocals and the stage concept and the opposite happened.
The jury spokewoman said the main criteria would be how suitable the acts were for the context of Eurovision, so I think they appreciated Nebulosa as fan favourites as the song is a hit right now in Spain. The vocals didn't seem like a big factor. I suspect the Spanish delegation wants to take a different direction from last year when Blanca had some of the best vocals but failed to engage with the televote. Maybe the consequence is we struggle with Eurovision juries this time if vocals are not on point, but we will have to wait for semifinal 2 first.
Omg!!! Thx for such a breakdown!!
I got this "what fits the eurovision the best" formula as this is a general anywhere - as the act basically is a complex body consisting of all the audio-visual elements. For me personally - vocals are very important. Not that it must be perfect but mostly for the fact, that in compare to others who will not struggle there, the one who will is not going to look good.
But whatever, I would actually expecting them backing Ange more likely. Also this was with the dancing boys screaming eurovision very stereotypically and it does not matter after all. I was just surprised after seeying the show.
Everybody here asked why NEBULOSSA won juries ... but then juries said something that allí fans here are critizing... and they just said that they are searching the SONG for Eurovisión and would so well on the European contest... We are f*** up. We risked last year and now they want to please "Europe"
after all this is a jury role, for this phrase can lock anything as Eurovision is also for anything. Each jury has different taste and different perception what can fit the best. This is their right to choose what they believe is the best. Thats why they are there :)
@@JanBors I agree but I don't like the way that they usually associate a dance song or pop song as a "Eurovision song", Nebolossa was not ever the best of the semi and they though they were the winner... I don't know It is a personal opinion but Befest must be independent of Eurovision and vote what is the best, and not what we think It would do well on Europe.
**contest
@@Taiki97 this is always a contradiction as I see Benidorm came back exactly for the fact to be finally succesfull at Eurovision. You have after all very amazing results in compare to the past. Seems its a working mechanism, it is a way even there will be always someone complaining, including me.
@@JanBors I know haha Befest is Nacional selection but I think there is not a known formula of what is good or what is not good for Eurovision. So firstly we should think about what is the best pack of what was presented and then will see what Europe think.
El sonido de rtv1 fue pésimo... Hay videos de personas que estuvieran allí y se escucha bien. Angy no tuvo problemas vocales, en esos vídeos se oye perfectamente. Fue la mejor.
only what matters is the television outcome, I also saw some phone grabs which actually proves the vocals really was not perfect. There could be another sound problems but the technology cannot shift your voice. But there is no need to fight about this. This was just a point of improvement and thats it. I have no high feelings about this.
I disagree with Angy's vocals being bad per se, I could hear her singing very well and she was probably the best singer on the night compared to the others, rather, I was taken aback from the fact that there was something wrong with the microphone, probably a combination of the backing track being too loud and her movements making her microphone drop her sound whenever her mouth was far away from it
that was weird with the mic taken far, but that goes mostly with the technique. Vocally it was struggling, maybe the audio problems just underlined it. Was she the best out of those 4, I would say yes, probably. The general thing is - will this be enough at Eurovision? It might but most probably its not. And thats it, just there is a thing to improve to finals. Thx for your comment ❤️
Right at the begining of the semifinal they say the jury will qualify which song will be best for Eurovision and what will Europe likes the more rather than the best performance. So that gives you an idea of the route the show takes.
For me it what so dissapoinment to see Angy score so little when she was the best in that group (maybe vocals where not on point but she still was the best voice, the stage made sense and the song is nice).
I call this the Blanca Paloma effect, they are not going to send the best of the group but what they think will get more points.
I'm affraid semifinal 2 will be even more dissapoinment.
The lineup is stong, all those 4 songs in first semi, if they are little bit reinvented - retouched and polished, they can all work quite well. Who knows. For me the only handicap can be the live singing and that can be somehow improved and worked on as acts are basically made. This is a huge advantage. So no worries. Still don't feel Eurovision winner, maybe nor top 10 but also not a disaster. So the broadcaster is doing for sure something very right.
@@JanBorsI really hope they will improve for the final. I only got chills from Angy' performance but no winners vibes yet.
People are criticizing the presence of those dancers because it contradicts the song's message, which aims to empower women who are derogatorily called "Zorras" by men.
I criticise it because its just ugly to watch for me 😂
I'm gay, and I don't mind the presence of queer elements as long as they are justified and not forced. Those dancers simply made the act look vulgar and commonplace. As if they were there just to fulfill a quota.
Overly sexualized acts have recently performed poorly at Eurovision, I can recall Achille Lauro, Ronela, and even Albina I would classify as such. I am not sure if there is a large conservative contingent of voters and juries, or just an overall culture not supportive of that on stage. I recommend Aiko to moderate her outfit, Pedestal is not meant to be a sexual song. I am open minded, I am just thinking about what helps get votes.
@@CoxaBranca I think the reason is as written above - if you see this is made just for some effect which clearly was also this case, it just annoys you. I think this is simple - its like a begging for votes kinda
@@JanBors If the dancers were women, you wouldn't be annoyed.
Will you react to Iceland soon?
idk, I have only one life 😂
@@JanBors haha thats true, these nf weeks will be busy for you
This is the weaker semifinal and there were serious sound issues that they said are now fixed for tomorrow. And everyone seems to love props this year and that annoys me cause in many songs it is not needed.
Lets hope second one will show some differences. yi am very curious
Tranquilo jan, esto no irá a Eurovision...el que irá saldrá de la 2 semifinal....lo de los bailarines es buscarse el voto del colectivo gay...y la cancion y su mensaje me gusta, pero la han estropeado con la coreografía...
well, I am ok, whatever will go for Eurovision, this is not on me to decide, I am after all just commenting it :D
@@JanBors yes...saludos de un Español en Amberes.
The sound quality of the semifinal was totally messed up. Also camera angels in most of the performances were not right in the point. Best ones live were angy and nebulossa. Sofia was too much hype but the performance can be polished
there is space for improvement for sure :)
Estas bien men?😂
as far as I feel, I am :D thx for asking :D
Do you know what is the diference between zorro and zorra?😂😂😂😂
Actually I do already and I was shocked 😂😂😂
@@JanBors 👍🏻🤣😂🤣😂
