Winter Coast to Coast Under 50 Hours Iron Butt Challenge on 2021 Yamaha FJR1300 - DAY ONE

  • 2529 miles total from El Segundo CA to Jacksonville Beach FL on an Eagle Rider 2021 #YamahaFJR1300 also known as the 50CC ride from the Iron Butt Association (coast to coast under 50 hours) at the end of January 2022.
All I wanted for my birthday this year was to ride. But of course my brain didn’t stop there… I knew this challenge was going to be difficult but I didn’t realize just how much. It took so much effort, I am unbelievably sore, beyond tired, and just plain exhausted from this ride. The temps dropped down to 28 not only the first night but also the second night. I endured 45mph+ wind gusts all through AZ-TX. I worked with what I have, which mean a really small peanut tank bag and my comms for navigation. My Lexin lasted the entire trip with the battery life under 15% when I pulled into the hotel. I was extremely lucky after striking a large cardboard type box deflected off a semi just hours into start and a patch of black ice at one of my gas station stops.
It wasn’t an easy ride, but I’m glad I accomplished what I set out to do. Physically one of the hardest rides to date, and tested my mental strength. I have a lot of lessons learned to take into my next long distance ride attempt. Thanks for tuning in and make sure to subscribe for more moto-related content!

Great performing bikes, I owned a 2018 for two years. Not comfortable enough for me at 6' tall and bad knees for long distance travel though. I sure had fun while I had it, somehow I never got a ticket with it or landed myself in jail.... I loved the way the engine sounded and performed. The engine in that bike is one of if not my all time favorite.

That's quite a ride!! I would never attempt something like that on a bike I am unfamiliar with, I honestly think my OCD brain would short circuit on me if I even tried it. But I guess if you don't actually live on one of the coasts and are limited on time, ie don't have time to ride to the coast on your own personal bike and then start the ride, the options are limited. Either way, you are quite the long haul rider.

@@whitmeza yeah, sorry only had looked at part 1 when I replied, part 2 really sealed the deal for you I guess. It can be sort of a tough ride and our user groups all speak of things that owners do to make the ride better for them (farkels), Lamm seats (I had mine made by Top Saddlerie in France), handlebar risers, foot pegs … the list goes on. That being said, solid ride for you, very envious. I have a question, I hope you don’t mind me asking, I am planning to do a BB Gold in the coming months and want some advice from experienced IBA riders. Would you prefer to do a straight west ride, maximizing sunlight riding hours, or would you turn back east bound afternoon to minimize sunlight in the face? Would appreciate your advice, ride on!
