I was there, as I had been in 85 at Live Aid! They were fantastic on both occasions, bloody awesome band! Mark wound us up big style at the start, saying his rhythm guy was off due to baby birth. Took the bloody roof off when the needle spot came on Eric!
No word to speak about this version of Romeo and Juliette. Mark and Eric as well as the other musicians are great. But the saxophonist is unbelievably good.
Right? It was so simply written, but sang its' own melody, and made its' way back up the scale to the joint finale with the rest of the band. Knopfler is a subtle but brilliant songwriter.

I hope you're doing OK. I was at that concert, as indeed I was at Live Aid. The whole place ERUPTED when they brought the needle spot up on Eric, Mark had spun some story about his rhythm guitaristist crying off due to his wife having a baby! Everyone was like "who is it, who is it?" Chris did a great solo, you're correct. Great band, sadly missed.
So True. Always gets to me as it reminds me of someone. I actually took her to see the band two days after we split. Imagine listening to this sitting next to your ex.

Interesting, the guy next to him knowns as EC is the greatest guitarist ever, I was hoping Mark would let EC jam a solo but I guess he wanted the roof to stay intact lmao...
Clapton was returning a favor to Knopfler for touring with him previously. Jack Sonni couldn't make it as his wife was in labor, and there was no time or place really to allow Clapton to showboat his talents. Besides, the music was all Dire Straits. Where would you insert an appropriate solo on someone else's songs? A professional knows when to step up and when to step back.
Great point, Nimesh; when the one many consider the best guitarist in the world is backing you, you gotta be great - and Mark, needless to say, IS indeed great. And, on the eve (October 22, 2018) of the announcement of his next tour, Mark is, thankfully, still going strong!
Love the little mistake at 6.01 when he cuts into the sax solo, he is so cute, his response, perhaps nervous at Clapton's presence . . . shows he's human like all the rest of us.
I was at that show. When a band plays such a piece in such an incredible way, one can only listen and think that it's a masterpiece played as if one was in heaven. As for the saxophonist, no word can describe his interpretation. I cannot stop listening to it. Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits are blessed.
I am a huge Knopfler/DS fan but I really don't think he knew what to do after Chris White's solo - there was a few bars where they looked lost afterwards!! "Errr how do we play after that?" Beautiful music, beautiful song, can never get bored of this. Perfection in a single song to me.
I saw this, virtually live, almost 30 years ago - almost forgot how passionately beautiful Chris White's sax solo was... sweet music.. played quietly - sorrowful lyrics... it doesn't get any better...

Absolutely out of this world, and the Sexiest Sax Solo EVER! I remember watching this live way back then, I mean the whole day was Magic but Dire Straits were just out of this universe, I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing that night, I actually recorded the whole gig on VHS and for years used to play it especially when I had a good few pints in me, but then lost the tapes when I was moving home but thank God for RUclips I can watch it again and again. This version lasts 11 mins, but when I saw them live in Dublin, Ireland, at The Point Depot, they played R&J for 16 mins and when the finished the applause nearly brought the house down literally, I also love it for the best chat up line ever, "You And Me Babe, How Bout It". Brilliant Track, Brilliant Band.
Me too, I recorded the entire concert on VHS, and I was absolutely spellbound and captivated by this performance. To my great despair the VHS tape ended I n the middle of the sax solo so I quickly had to change tapes, made me furious 😡 Later I found a way to copy the VHS tape to an audio tape, so I cut both parts of the song from two VHS tapes together on one audio tape. Unfortunately there was this gap in the middle with 30 seconds of the sax solo missing, but nevertheless this became by far the most frequently played song on my tape deck in my car and on my Walkman. I still have the audio tape, kept it for sentimental reasons, although I don‘t have any tape deck anymore. Thank goodness there‘s RUclips so I can watch it as often as I want to, and of course I have a digital extract for my cellphone. Amazing to watch the 2015 videos of Mark playing this live, and then compare it to this. He still has the same passion, almost 30 years apart. I truly love this song. It changed my life the first time I heard it.
Totally agree! But guess what: Recently, I showed this epic sax solo to my pupils...... No reaction at all! Very sad! This was music as ts best, but it seems that it's not appreciated anymore by the young generation.
So many of the comments here are so right on !! But for me this song means so much. This song was my 2nd wife's and my favorite song. There is a reason why the saxophone is THE SEXIEST instrument. Just listen to this complete song. It also ended up being the song that our tragic love together so sadly passed. She was my everything...
This might be one of the greatest live performances I have ever watched. The added saxophone is fantastic! Must have been amazing to have seen it live at the time!
It was! bloody unbelievable, the whole place erupted when Knopfler announced he had got Clapton as replacement rhythm guitarist, with Clappers blcked out while he announced he had found someone "who hadn't played Wembley, but he had played". What a set.
I don't normally comment on these things but these two are my favourite performers in the world. But also the guy on the saxophone 🎷 I'm sorry I don't know his name but absolutely stunning. These are truly gifted people.
ive watched this concert , D.S part, several times. First time noticed that 7.24 + min. Mark and specially Clapton face ,while perfoming he doesnt move normally-, and how they react, specially Eric, to Chris White solo. The sax, piano, and Marks great writings and guitar work===a very special sound and feeling
I agree!
the way that Clapton is just watching on in awe at 7:26 is great. lovely to see the greats respecting other instruments being played so well.
Amazing to watch the 2015 videos of Mark playing this live, and then compare it to this. He still has the same passion, almost 30 years apart. I truly love this song. It changed my life the first time I heard it.
I am always flooded by different emotions while listening this songs. This song touches all my notes.
Just does not get better than this.if the sax doesn’t get you,you must be made of stone.
Totally agree! But guess what: Recently, I showed this epic sax solo to my pupils...... No reaction at all! Very sad! This was music as ts best, but it seems that it's not appreciated anymore by the young generation.
@@Steview2 Chris White is an awesome sax player, but for me this song is about the guitar and piano.
Chris Whites sax solo is still the best I've ever heard live. And I think probably the best version of this song ever as well.
Have you heard the version with Emmylou Harris?
Under upmost pressure. Killed it
@@Buddhamama-on_tour_2022 I don't think I have no.
What a MASTERPIECE! Every chord in my heart was struck and I struggle to retain my tears☺
The BEST version of this beautiful song.HANDS DOWN
Wow, Dire Straits combined with Eric Clapton? Heaven on earth!
This might be one of the greatest live performances I have ever watched. The added saxophone is fantastic! Must have been amazing to have seen it live at the time!
It is... I am born i the wrong era I think.
I watched it live on the TV at the time and was spellbound. It was the best live performance I have ever seen.
the best concert l have ever been was taj mahal at the filmore east. "the real thing."
I love this song
It was! bloody unbelievable, the whole place erupted when Knopfler announced he had got Clapton as replacement rhythm guitarist, with Clappers blcked out while he announced he had found someone "who hadn't played Wembley, but he had played". What a set.
My first show ever. I feel 13 again every time I listen to Straits. Mark is a very talented guitarist....
....no glowing screens of cells in the crowd, just enjoying and experiencing real music.
Big Serb are you serious?
David Clinging For now, yes time is unstoppable. Change in unstoppable. Does that mean that change is always for the best?
I don't normally comment on these things but these two are my favourite performers in the world. But also the guy on the saxophone 🎷 I'm sorry I don't know his name but absolutely stunning. These are truly gifted people.
His name is chris white he the saxphone player
Remember this like it was yesterday, I was 16.
Brilliant performance and of course: the greatest saxophone solo ever performed!
Oooh, Dire Straits, I'm totally into you! ❤❤❤💋💖
Mad respect for Knofler, and the sax guy KILLS IT....at about 7:25 the look from both Knofler and Clapton says it all. Great performance!!!!!!!!!
+Dustin Brown I love Mark Knopfler. Who else on Earth would Clapton choose to play backup to? This is amazing.
Spot on. That look is like WTF did he just do, Clapton gives Chris a nod and just before the chorus starts again Mark does a double take. Pure gold
This song would make a lovely musical ... I can see every scene in my head.
I think another English dude made a play about it. It has the same name tho, so it might be hard to search for
God damn Shakespeare, I'd rather revise Dire Straits than Macbeth.
hah
superb band, listened all through my twenties, listening to this brings back so many memories ...
ive watched this concert , D.S part, several times. First time noticed that 7.24 + min. Mark and specially Clapton face ,while perfoming he doesnt move normally-, and how they react, specially Eric, to Chris White solo. This D.S perfomance with Eric will i think remain as one of the best and more emotional moments ever in music concerts. Chris here breaks the molde....you hear that and once he finishes you cant get inspired.
All songwriters tremble in awe of this composition.
This is one of those songs that I can listen to in the morning and it'll stay with me all day... Fuckin beautiful...
Wow just when you thought it couldnt get better...Knopfler with Clapton...2 of the best guitarists ever playing together. Why cant this happen more often?
Knophler & Clapton are just unbelievable! The sax player is something else as well! ❤️👏👏👏
