I looked foward to this film when the posters arrived at the theaters(1989). It went straight to video and I saw why. Damn this movie is only for comic book junkies! Love this!
man i really enjoyed watching this back in the 90's. The story and the way it was told was great. Forget the graphics and fancy technowizardry. Sometimes good old story telling beats fancy graphics.
i never realized this movie never got a theatrical release until about a year or so ago, because i actually did see it in the theater with my dad when i was a kid in what in retrospect had to have been a test screening. i clearly remember every detail and plot point (the rubber ears, the carsick fakeouts, the hyperactive editing) and it was probably the first time that both my dad and i left a movie thinking it was pretty terrible
I love the Cinematography and the editing from 40:52 to 42:02 because like it, silently shows that Captian America is waking up in an entirely different world now. The "Made in Japan" and "Made in West Germany" (reunification was months away during filming) stickers kinda scare him cause as far as he knows, they're still the Nazis and Imperial Japanese. Kudos to the editors.
I don't get the cinematography? There in a obvious green screen car , nothing special ,but the capt America realization is neat Ashame the rest of the movie is ass
I saw this when I was a 9 or 10…it’s actually not bad rewatching it. Man, you gotta hand it to the director&writers…they cared. I mean look at how much of this movie made it’s way into the Chris Evans one.
I read an interview with the writer, Stephen Tolkan, in an old Cinemafantastique magazine. He said he knew nothing about Captain America when he started writing the screenplay, and he expressed his disdain for the Cap costume and Red Skull face, intentionally minimizing their use in the movie. They changed Red Skull from a Nazi to an Italian fascist, and made the titular hero look like a wuss most of the time. There is hardly any care involved here.

This movie was cringe levels of fun and filler for the background, modern Marvel movies are flashy popcorn films that lose their charm quickly, then again a kid has a short attention span so it suits them.
I was 20 when this came out, always loved the Japanese radio and West German truck bit. Ned Beaty in both universes DC and Marvel... "Isn't that right Mr. Luthor?"
"Stop calling me your brother!" WHAM! Right out of a comic book, but that's okay. The sequence where he runs up the stairs, deflecting the Red Skull's bullets off his shield was edited surprisingly well. The Russo brothers did a similar (but far better sequence) in the second Captain America movie. (Winter Soldier). I take this movie for what it is: a guilty pleasure.
So cool seeing these old movie adaptations of comics. This was when they had to be more creative and the film is all the better for it. Today, people are ok with watching the same formula over and over so there is no need for any innovation in the realm of "superhero movies"
This movie was so awesome for it's time. It was so rare to have any super hero movies from Marvel back in the 90's. Today we have so much, but none of them are that good.
+Shane Walker You did not read the comment did you. I guess it did not live up to your expectations. Unlike today, where we have like 3 Marvel movies a year. This was rare for us kids in the 90s.
All in all not a bad movie at all. I've always be a fan of Captain America one of my favorite's of all costumed avenger's and my all time favorite "Marvel Superhero" and I really enjoyed this movie although there are some issue's that I have with it as do most Captain America fans I would presume but all in all not a bad movie.
Man I remember they advertise this movie at the theaters, but it took like 3 years for it to come out! I love this movie! The actor was great and you truly feel Captain America's pain in this movie! I often sing the song to myself. A million years a million years long long time ago! 😢😅
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it wasn't the greatest either. Believe me when I say much worse superhero crap came out during this time, such as the truly awful Superboy TV series. It is a joke that nobody laughed at, yet it lasted for multiple seasons. The problems I have with this movie is that they made a movie featuring Captain America then made him totally ineffective for most of the movie. The super soldier serum seems to have no visible effect on him either. I could've grudgingly excepted that & the ever present boom mikes in shots, but that ending. REALLY? This is how it ends? Enough about that. Thank-you for posting this video. It always fun to go back & reminisce about the times before special effects were as polished as they are today.
I remember the first time I saw this come on TNT, I thought, based on the film quality, that it was some lost relic of the 70's, then I saw that it came in '90, I said OUCH!!!!
I remember noticing that as a kid and telling my friends that. They didn’t believe me. This was probably 91 or 92 so there was no internet. Same thing for a fully bearded Ewan McGreggor in the Duel of The Fates music video. That obviously I could prove a few years later.
I much preferred this version rather than the CGI enhanced, special effect versions they came out with later. At least you knew what was real and what wasn't. Thanks for sharing.
You'd have to be a shallow moron if you care more about the technical aspects of a movie than the movie itself. At least the MCU Captain America films were well-written and got the character right. The Captain America in those movies and in the comics was an experienced soldier with a tactical mind, a strong leader that could lead anyone into battle, and he'd probably have all tens on the SPECIAL system if he were a Fallout character. The Captain America in this movie is a buffoon that constantly runs away, hides, or gets beaten up. He didn't even last one mission in World War II before he got strapped to a rocket and frozen in ice for many years. The filmmakers clearly didn't understand the character, and it shows.
In episode 2 Cap teams up with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg to take down the infamous Death Row Records leader Suge Knight! *SPOILER ALERT* End-credit scene: 2Pac was actually flying the Quinjet with the rest of the Avengers to Mexico
I heard an interview where he said he'd only seen the first one (the interview was after Winter Soldier came out, but before Civil War), and he said he really enjoyed it, thought Evans was great, and sounded a bit jealous of the SFX. He also said that he thought the parallels of the transformation scene sets was amusing. Also said he was up for a cameo, but had no idea if his agent was able to let Marvel know before shooting (of the First Avenger) was over.
I love Captain America, one of my favorite heroes, and in the marvel comics, I once had lots of them. Just had to come back and see this again….a simpler version to a world obsessed with AI, CGI and special effects……all the special effects in the world doesn’t make a movie better….the story does….it is the backbone of what it takes to create a good movie, including the writers who have to deal with lines for their characters, including having good actors/actresses being able to play their characters well and while imagining an area around them as being void or in another timeline, etc. It’s not an easy task while trying to make everything work smoothly on a limited budget, thus many fall away underneath the pressure of expectations which they haven’t been able to achieve or originally aimed for. I’ve seen some great films that never reached the blockbuster market, but yet they were good movies to watch. But I’ve also seen those that did, and yet fizzled out because the story was lacking substance and thus became a passing memory. I guess it’s all depends on how one views things. For myself, I consider this a good movie, without all the frills of technology gone wild, and trying with sticking to what Captain America was in the comics, good storytelling….HIGH 5….👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖

I bet you have some really great stories of the past
Shut up old man
I enjoy the older movies. I can't watch the newer movie. I was told it was called jump and cut.
It hurts my brain to watch It.
So thanks For this upload.
I love the scenes with Steve Rogers and his girlfriend.
i never realized this movie never got a theatrical release until about a year or so ago, because i actually did see it in the theater with my dad when i was a kid in what in retrospect had to have been a test screening. i clearly remember every detail and plot point (the rubber ears, the carsick fakeouts, the hyperactive editing) and it was probably the first time that both my dad and i left a movie thinking it was pretty terrible
Dad still around to see the mcu captain America atleast?
Rubbish it’s better than all the later Captain Americas combined.
1979 movie was horrid
1/3👍 The other 2/3👎😮 Big disappointment!
This video made more than the movie did in theaters...ironic
Wait for real
This movie was direct to dvd though
But tell me do you like this CAPTAIN AMERICA movie??
@@fvillag1 I haven't fully seen it, let me get back to you on that

Fun fact
Whenever Captain America puts on his costume and his ears are showing, those are actually glued on plastic ears
Damn right and the actors Dad wrote ,the catcher in the Ri
You ruined the movie for me
This movie sucked anyways
You didn't have to tell anyone, you can DEFINITELY tell, LOL!
Commenting on something that’s 9 months old smh 🤦♂️

Did we watch the same movie?
@@charlies2666 lol hells yeah we did…
I read an interview with the writer, Stephen Tolkan, in an old Cinemafantastique magazine.
Kids growing up today, have no idea how lucky they are with the Marvel films they got compared to when I was a kid.
this is the only marvel movie that ever needed to be made. the rest are just filler
@@CmdrTigerKing Are you kidding? The MCU Infinity Saga and the 2000s Marvel Movies are Superior over this movie because they have a better budget and stories that everyone remembers and loves. Agreed. I wanted to watch this film, but I couldn't stay long because it dragged a little and this 90s Cap was a selfish idiot pathetic loser compared to the S-tiers MCU, 616, EMH, MUA, and Ultimate Captain America.

This movie was cringe levels of fun and filler for the background, modern Marvel movies are flashy popcorn films that lose their charm quickly, then again a kid has a short attention span so it suits them.
More people have watched this movie this year than when it came out. That's what mcu and Chris Evans portrayal of cap has ment to people.
Worst part is you feel bad for the boy who will become Red Skull. That’s a harsh opening.
I felt it when I saw this after having an awful dental procedure.
Captain America 2019 is like a good steak, Captain America 1990 is like a cheese toast , not as good but still fills the belly.
this was more like food poisoning: botulism
👊😂
From malaysia, I enjoy it very much. Thanks for loading it. :-)
Well I am a Muslim and Filipino, does that count?
Captain America, the 1990 version starring Matt Salinger, should‘ve deserved to be released in the movie theaters in 1990.
Pretty sure some dumbass hacked the system and made it only available on the internet. This is high quality stuff meant for theaters.
I was 20 when this came out, always loved the Japanese radio and West German truck bit. Ned Beaty in both universes DC and Marvel... "Isn't that right Mr. Luthor?"
I remember watching this movie on Syfy, and I actually really love this movie.
The original Captain America movie from the early 90's!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Captain America's only superpower in this is to pretend to be sick to jack cars
1:27:25 This whole sequence was pretty cool. Especially that roll with the shield.
So. Many. Jumpcuts.
"Mr President! Thanks!" *thumbs up and goofy smile*
Well cm to another episode of where quarantine led me.
" Flashback"
Cap't America had the dynamic detail that was ecstatic and worth every penny!
No it wasn't..movies like Terminator 2 and Back to the future was awesome for its time..this was crap
+shaolin dynasty all of the marvel movies are good, obviously you are not any kind of fan.
+Shane Walker You did not read the comment did you. I guess it did not live up to your expectations. Unlike today, where we have like 3 Marvel movies a year. This was rare for us kids in the 90s.
+shaolin dynasty this was crap...so what about movies like TMNT..or even before that Superman..those where greats
I understand how you feel, Captain America. I lost my true love 40 years ago and miss her to this day.
I'm sorry for you man. How old r u?
Loved this as a kid and still do
Me also, despite only seeing it only a couple of times.
Fun fact the actor who plays captain america is the sun of J.D Salinger. AKA the author of The Catcher in the Rye!!!
wow really
I heard it was joe bidens son beau
loved this as a kid. this was my cap lol. you guys are spoiled with your chris evans cap
Same and so true... At least we can appreciate the marvel movies more than them, because we saw it from what it was, to what it is now lol
Chris evans is better
Back in this day, Marvel movies were so hard to come by. And they were rare. Not like how it is now.
Don't forget the legendary batman that came out just a year earlier
I remember the first time I saw this come on TNT, I thought, based on the film quality, that it was some lost relic of the 70's, then I saw that it came in '90, I said OUCH!!!!
5 star salute to America. May we all do our parts to Keep America Great.
Scott Paulin had 2 roles in Captain America (1990). 1 as the Red Skull & the other as a US Army Doctor.
I remember noticing that as a kid and telling my friends that. They didn’t believe me. This was probably 91 or 92 so there was no internet. Same thing for a fully bearded Ewan McGreggor in the Duel of The Fates music video. That obviously I could prove a few years later.
Where in the movie?

@@LoganWood121 There was a 70s film and a 40s film.
REAL ME TOO!!! have you seen the 1944 and two 70’s movies??? 70’s steve is my roman empire
Nah new captain america’s better
Wow cap is from California in this movie . They could’ve called it the first west coast avenger
Ha
I understood that reference
In episode 2 Cap teams up with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg to take down the infamous Death Row Records leader Suge Knight! *SPOILER ALERT* End-credit scene: 2Pac was actually flying the Quinjet with the rest of the Avengers to Mexico
I don't remember captain america being this lit before.
I wanna hear what Matt Salinger thinks of Chris Evan's Captain America
He's actually JD Salinger's son.
better
Zachary Yan The more you know!
@Rusty trumbone youre right well he is a virtue signal guy, I fucking hate it. But it doesn't change the fact that he nailed the role.
Most comic accurate movie suit ever!
I love Cap as well but the later movies are my favorite rendition. Cap is still great no matter what.
Thank you for posting this classic.
