Hair dryer and fingers: Make small crevice between buckets prying with fingers and thumbs of one hand and direct hot air of hair dryer down the gap. Keep maneuvering the gap around and eventually hot air pops them apart.
Hot water on bottom bucket, just did one in the laundry tub. The bottom one was in rough shape from previously being used for mixing thinset as well, worked like a charm
When my compressor isn't handy, I hold/prop buckets against my truck exhaust and heat up outside bucket, use thumbs and fingers to separate, easiest way I've found. My buddy made a special curved trowel. He uses it to unstick buckets.

Help a lot
Thanks
I use ice in the top bucket for a short time. Which causes that top bucket to shrink. Could also use cold water
In the summer use a small amount of ice in the top bucket or old water.

That's an interesting solution, particularly if you don't have an extension cord/outlet available for a hair dryer or heat gun.
Physics. Cold air shrinks and hot air expands
@@willpatterson4866=put several empty beer or pop cans in empty bucket and stack other bucket on top of it.
I just hang a small rag over the side of the bottom bucket before I stack the next one.
That would probably work, though if you have a lot of buckets like i do you might run out of rags before you run out of buckets :)
lol no wd40 on site, but not sure I would want to use that depending on what I am using the buckets for , might leave the residue
