Growing up, Lizzie never realized how deeply she was affected by what she saw on the news and experienced at school. But when she took the time to look back, she started to understand that events she experienced really impacted her way of thinking and daily life, and the level of her anxiety.
When Lizzie was younger, she lived at Fort Hood - the biggest U.S. military base in the country. She was there when a horrible shooting happened. The day after the horrific event, she went to school and saw armed guards surrounding the building. When she approached a guard, he assured her that he was there to protect her. But because Lizzie was so young, she didn't understand why she needed to be protected at school. At such a young age, the whole thing was really confusing.
Then, when Lizzie was in middle school, another student brought a weapon to school. The student was caught before he was able to use his weapon, and the school was able to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. However, even though Lizzie was so grateful that things didn't escalate, the whole experience still really scared her.
After that, Lizzie felt a similar sense of fear, confusion and sadness when she heard about the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook. She couldn't imagine how the victims must have felt, and she hugged her younger brother and told him she loved him after hearing about what happened on the news.
Then, when Lizzie was a senior in high school, she found out about another tragedy at Stoneman Douglas. As much as it broke her heart to hear about yet another school shooting, Lizzie couldn't help but feel numb to the pain - and that scared her even more.
After each event, Lizzie became more anxious in her daily life. When her school had an active shooter drill, she couldn't help but fear the worst, and she immediately texted her brother to make sure he was okay.
Lizzie believes that, although this is hard for anyone to comprehend, it is especially difficult for kids and teenagers. She doesn't understand why her generation has to feel any sense of fear when walking into a school, going to a store or heading to a movie. She may think to herself, "When did this become normal?" However, Lizzie has hope for the future. She thinks that her generation will be the change that the world needs to make a difference, and she is hopeful that future generations will not have experience what Lizzie and her classmates went through.

Shootings are now normal. I’m not saying that in a “iT’s nAtUrAl” way. Shooting at a certain high school out of state. Not surprised. Shooting at a certain high school in state. Not surprised. Nobody says, “It’s not normal to shoot up a high school!” anymore. It’s a tragic incident that you don’t feel surprised about anymore. Then it hurts you when your school ends up being the scene of a shooting. When will it end?

My school is just horrible, they don't care when you're depressed, they don't care if you pass or not so they don't help, I'm pretty sure they'd blame shooting deaths on the victims if anything and it just makes me angry, schools don't really care about safety or well being, they turn their heads when they hear statistics about teen suicide BECAUSE of school.

I remember that in February it was almost the end of school and we were doing some art I asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom so I was walking down the hallway I heard the announcement that there was a lockdown for shooting and I ran up the stairs and I was lucky enough to reach my class or else I would have been locked out I'm not lying btw it's a true story

I was in the third grade and none of us knew what was happening. We were only two minutes away and after we left is when we found out.
I remember when my school almost had a shooting. At first there were rumors, that an 8th grader had a gun and was going to shoot at 6th period. My friends and I were freaking out because we were in the closest class room next to the 8th grade classrooms. Luckily, our principal got the weapon and sent the 8th graded to the counselor before anything went wrong. The next day there were also tons of police officers at school. It’s scary, but you have to remember to stay calm. Thanks for reading!

This is a horrifying way of life. I’m at the point in my life where I’m even afraid to go out. I was even afraid of something happening while I was at my church after Charleston and Sutherland Springs. Just having to admit that is a tragedy that we have to live like this.
This poor girl, going through so much stress. My school has never gone through stuff like this, I feel so sorry for her.

I'm the same age as you, Lizzie. I was also shocked at how numb I was to the Parkland shooting. What scares me about the younger generation is that it seems like they're just as numb as us, but from an earlier age. They make memes about it which I guess I understand, but it just shows how numb things have gotten. I hope we can find a way to end this scourge for good.

Someone (a high schooler about 16-17 at the time) threaten to shoot up my school and it was the most scariest time in my life. The teachers told us to stay calm and I had a panic attack and my friends were all freaking out. But I'm glad no one got hurt or shot and I'm glad still alive today

i can remember in middle school when shooting threats were targeted at the schools in my state. i had a breakdown after finding out at school, and there were police officers at my school the day that the shootings were threatened to happen. "when did this become normal?" is such a heartbreakingly true question. why do kids have to deal with the fear of going to school one day and not making it back home? why can't we go and do our normal daily tasks without the threat of being killed looming over us? when did ANY of this become normal?

At my school we have a lockdown because convicts escaped, it happened like 2 or 3 times already in one school year
When it was the shooting in sandy hook I was in a different elementary school in ct. and everyone in my family called my family saying that if I’m ok did I get injured. But I didn’t thank you to god I was safe.
This really hit home for me because there was a sh00ting at my church almost exactly a year ago while the high school service (which is the one I went to at the time) was going on.

I honestly relate to this story so much. Ever since I heard of the school shooting that happened in texas last year and the shooting that happened on 4th of July, I was scared of going ANYWHERE. I didn't want to go to school, the store, the park, etc. I was even paranoid about going in the car. It's sad that we have to live this way. I hate living in America.
It’s especially hard to have siblings at school with you. I’m a triplet and I don’t know what I’d do if this ever happened and they got hurt. I’ve had panic attacks abt things like this happening and I’ve had hard conversations with them and it’s hard to believe that we even have to do this at all.

I could sorta relate. I live in Washington D.C. and shootings happen often in my neighborhood because people have beef with other people that sometimes aren't even from our neighborhood and it got so bad to the point where if something sounds remotely like a gun, I kinda freak out in my mind. It sucks.
My high school experienced a scare too, a kid posted on social media that he was going to shoot up the school luckily the kid was caught before hand however the day after he was caught my school put up metal detectors. This is a sad and true reality we live in and I pray to god that gun violence will go down so we don’t have to worry about going to the grocery store, movie theaters and especially school.
This poor girl, she sounds so sweet yet broken, she shouldn’t have to worry about any of this 💕

After hearing stuff like this, learning stuff in school that people dont know scare kids, i dont feel safe anywhere. Outside, i feel like ill get kidnapped or someone’s car will pull up to me and they’ll shoot me. At my house, i feel like someone will break in. At school, lockdowns, shooting, everything. In stores and theaters, someone will kill me there. Ive been staying away from people more because i feel like they’re gonna kindap me, ive been so much more scared of people,and I’m developing super bad anxiety around anyone.

Another reason to be happy that my dad worries about me, he told me that he wanted to go to school with me because of events like these that happen. Now I don't don't blame parents/kids with siblings who worry about eachother.
The part when she hugged her little brother gave me a new Anxiety...I realized my little sis goes to a different school than me cause she lives with her mom (we're half siblings) So do HER other siblings...She's 3 and in preschool....I can't imagine her dying or getting injured due to a school shooter

Omg, this is such a powerful message. It's true, we shouldn't have to ask ourselves, "Is it safe to go to school?" Schools are supposed to be a safe place, in other words, a home away from home for students.
I actually lived in El Paso when the Walmart shooting happened. I wasn’t at the Walmart luckily but when I moved out I thought about it more than I did when it happened and it’s actually very tragic.
Same I'm from El Paso and when I heard that happened I was scared and heartbroken because it was a hate crime and it pissed me off that this dude had the AUDACITY to come all the way from Dallas just to do such a thing in El Paso....

I go to Santa Fe high school, I'm a freshman. I want in junior high in second period when my best friend was shot 4 times in the chest and another one of my friends shot in the head and survived. It's is SO sad and it's hard having to go to Santa Fe high school EVERY day and having to see the garage doors hiding to art hall where the shooting happened. All 8 of the kids shot and the 2 teachers shot didn't deserve what happened this is so sad and tragic, it's been 2 years 3 and a quarter school years since it happened and it's still haunts me until this day.
