For me, the Super Powers action figures were the best 80s toys produced, followed by the Secret Wars figs. Iron Man was my favorite. Too bad Capt. America's OG shield did not come with the fig.
"Doctor Doon, Kane, and Maneeto" I'm a big fan of Maneeto. Him and Baron Zap. The Secret Wars comic was created to sell action figures. It failed to sell the figures, but the book was such a hit that it changed comics.
I had pretty much this entire run as a set of hand me downs from my cousin, even with the limited articulation I think they hold up better than the Toy-biz offerings a few years later, even if most of them would have been refused military service because of that unnaturally high arch they seemed to suffer from.
The Black Symbiote Suit was literally introduced in the Secret Wars comics, it was one of the most pivotal and consequential moments of the whole storyline.
Marvel Comics had been bandying about for a couple years before the toyline the idea of a new black costume for Spider-Man that could "self-heal". Mattel LOVED this idea because it allowed them to sell 2 versions of the same toy. This was ALL before the idea of the character of "Venom" was thought of. Then there was the tie-in "Secret Wars" comic book series to go with the toys and Spider-Man first got his black costume in the comic books. He also showed up in it in some issues of the other Marvel Spider-Man titles in it too, but he was always meant to eventually return to his classic red and blue costume. Somewhere along the line at Marvel Comics the idea evolved into the suit being a symbiote, then becoming a character of its own...a scorned lover villian type, and the idea for the involvement of Eddie Brock was developed and so on. None of the Venom stuff was established when it was just Spider-Man in a black costume for the Secret Wars toy and comics tie-in. However, in my opinion, it was an obvious direction for the comics to go in...the path was lit up for anyone to see. I swear this is true... I remember ~10 year old me buying the black costume Spider-Man and reading the toy's card back and thinking: Uh-oh! This is going to be one of those things that seems great at the time but then turns out to be really bad! I swear I thought that!
@@Drawkcabi All true regarding the Venom spin coming much later, but the black suit was revealed to be a symbiotic entity in that original Secret Wars comic series by Peter himself. Great series that was, and the figures were good for the time...loved that Dr. Doom.
I got a bunch of these figs for my birthday and still have a few of them in my collection. I really wish they had included more characters who actually appeared in the "Secret Wars" story, but overall I still have fond memories of this line.
I had these and recall the second series being hard to get. Saw Hobgoblin only once and got him. But I will throw this out there- the line failed because Cap didn't have a real shield. Pissed us off as kids. My friend tried using the Mego shield and it didn't work. Also Dr Doom...my grandma made him a cloth robe and cape for me. 😂 wish I still had that
This series had so much potential! They had access to a treasure trove to make action figures from with characters from Marvel Comics! The figures were so beautifully painted...but then the paint rubbed off so easily. They each had a grear unique head sculpt, but they all had pretty much the same body, with a few modifications like Doc Ock's octopus arms amd Falcon's wings. And some of the characters they chose, especially in the first wave: Kid me in the 80's: "Who the Hell is Kang the Conquerer?" Adult me in the 2000's: "Who the Hell is Kang the Conquerer?" Then I watch the 2010's cartoon _Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes_ where Kang plays a significant part. Then adult me when Loki and Antman out: "Who the Hell is Kang the Conquerer?" (I'm trying to say he's totally forgettable.) What if instead of Kang we got Red Skull? He could have had a removable mask that fit over his head to disquise his red skull. Magneto should have come with a cape and his helmet should have been removable. Dr. Doom I forgive for not having a cape, he was one of the few figures that had some good accessories and also he also did something I LOVED my action figures to be able to do...he could carry his accessories when he wasn't holding them! He came with a laser rifle and a laser pistol and each had tabs on them. There was a sculpted backpack on Dr. Doom with a slot that could hold the laser rifle and a holster on his leg (it actually looked more like a garter) with a slot that could hold the laser pistol. Loved he could carry his weapons, more of the action figures should have been able to do that! Spider-Man came with no accessories (except the shield 🙄 ) but what if he came with something like a net you could throw on bad guys that simulated a web? If we got a wave 3 and we got The Hulk they could have done a mail away offer for a Bruce Banner figure like Super Powers did with their mail away Clark Kent. If they were doing Hulk they would have HAD to do a different body scult to make him bigger? I suppose they were planning on using the same body for Hulk and Abomination...theyb could have used it again and made a Juggernaut figure. What about an Antman figure? They could have done cool things with that. One of his accessories could be a tiny version of his figure, maybe like M.A.S.K. size? Maybe it could come with a little ant it could ride? Lots they could have done with a Thor figure! They could have repainted Hobgoblin, made a few minor adjustments, and had a Green Goblin figure. Instead of planning to do Dazzler, they should have planned to do a Firestar figure. Then if Iceman had been released in the U.S. we would have had a complete Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends collection!!! They could have sold them in a 3 pack set! I will say the Tower of Doom was one of the most awesome playsets of the 80's!!! It was one of the more smaller sets but the amount of play features it had, I don't think any playset gave you more bang for your buck! Calling the Tower of Doom the "Stronghold" of the villians didn't make as much sense though. The tower felt like a bunker outpost you'd set up in the mountains or something, but not a complete base. If Mattel could have invested more into this series imagine them doing a HUGE villian base and the Tower of Doom could connect to it _kind of_ like Point Dread with Castle Grayskull? There was just so much potential for this toyline!!!
I have the series one of the secret wars action figures there's some of my favorite toys they just have a cool nostalgia feel for me but I never knew that they were supposed to be a series 3 I really enjoyed this video another great One junkman Would have loved to be able to get a hulk in the scale with these the new retro one is actually smaller than these are
I grew up with very few toys my parents only brought me toys 2 times a year my birthday and Christmas . Which I mainly asked for my TMNT figures but also had other action figures that I found at my local flea market I remember buying the magneto figure from this line
I feel like the reason why this and the superpowers didn't go over as much as they should have , kids were more into transformers and GI Joe at that time. if they had come out a few years earlier I think they would have been a bigger hit
I had five of these figures. I had them sitting around my desk. There wasn't a lot to them but, at the time, they were pretty cool. All my friends had some.
Very interesting and informative as always Junkman! I was under the impression during the 90's that the Marvel and DC Toybiz superhero lines were these figures retooled a bit. Insightful about the Hulk not being made but a little disappointing. Thankfully they rectified that during the 90's.
I had all of series one action figures but didn’t have any play sets or vehicles, also I never could find series two. I knew it came out but my local Toys R Us and Child World didn’t have them in stock, only thousands of series one figures.
I had 2 of thé 3 rarest as a kid, they were easy to find in Europe, remember buying them and leave Iceman in the car during a hot day. plastic of the legs was a bit too smooth during a few hours After that 😂
In my opinion (and that's all that it is), they should've made them in 3.75 Scale & Fully Invested in the Line. Even Today with MOTU & WWE, They still don't get it.🤦🏾♂️
The figures were plain cheap. Even small MASK figures were better-done. Wolverine's snap-on claws were horrible. The lenticular sheilds were cheap, and something no character used in the comic book series except for Captain America.
For me, the Super Powers action figures were the best 80s toys produced, followed by the Secret Wars figs. Iron Man was my favorite. Too bad Capt. America's OG shield did not come with the fig.

Baron Zap!.Haaa!!.I don’t think Junk is a huge Marvel fan..

That was pretty awesome seeing Mr. Fantastic fight Mer Man and General Grievous' wheel bike. ;-)

Finally a Secret Wars video!!! They should release the series 3 figures as retro figures.
@00:54 Mah-neato need Manudo! You keep me in stitches!
Once again I had no knowledge of this thank you Junkman
It's somewhat like the MCU Skrulls existing without the Fantastic Four, that didn't make their debut in the original Avengers comic book series.
I have the series one of the secret wars action figures there's some of my favorite toys they just have a cool nostalgia feel for me but I never knew that they were supposed to be a series 3 I really enjoyed this video another great One junkman

I wonder how they would have pulled off Mr. Fantastic's stretching ability.
I feel like the reason why this and the superpowers didn't go over as much as they should have , kids were more into transformers and GI Joe at that time. if they had come out a few years earlier I think they would have been a bigger hit

Great line. Hulk proto is out there
That's Dr Doom & Annihilus in the mystery Mr.Fantastic pictures. Gr8 work, broheim!
Yep. It is. I mean it wasn’t named on the art but I think I wasn’t clear on that
These woulda been cool in my ToyBiz collection of Marvel.
Seems like a lot of wall fighting they should have made the wall villan action figure.
I want to see Baron Shemp fight a bicycle.
so many fond memories indeed! thank you
Hopefully with one of the new Avengers films being Secret Wars they re-release Series 1 and 2 and finally release Series 3

One of those wasn't a nameless villain it was Dr Doom
Nameless Villain look like DR Doom
It is
Thunderball would have been great. The only intelligent member of The Wrecking Crew. And a classic Abomination? Missed opportunity.
Baron zemo
I had all of series one action figures but didn’t have any play sets or vehicles, also I never could find series two. I knew it came out but my local Toys R Us and Child World didn’t have them in stock, only thousands of series one figures.
LOVED SECRET WARS!!!!
I actually found a pic of Hulks mold
It's stunning that Hasbro adamantly refuses to remake that version of Dr Doom in new lines, never ever, no way, no how, so there!
He's out now in the 2 pack along with Photon .
I had 2 of thé 3 rarest as a kid, they were easy to find in Europe, remember buying them and leave Iceman in the car during a hot day. plastic of the legs was a bit too smooth during a few hours After that 😂
I got the first series missed out on the second series.
Does anyone know if there are pics of Hulk, Abomination and series 3 mold of action figures?
In my opinion (and that's all that it is), they should've made them in 3.75 Scale & Fully Invested in the Line. Even Today with MOTU & WWE, They still don't get it.🤦🏾♂️
Unbelievable that they dropped the ball on so many action figures in the 80s now they make all of them and nobody cares
Baron Zemo not Baron Zapp.
I hated those. They were an odd scale and they had shields, for what? Just badly done figures.
The paint decos came off so easy too.
Baron Zep?
