Great channel and great videos! I'm studying for my C1 exam next month and all this is very helpful. Just wrote this essay about the subject in this video... For several decades now, governments all over the world have looked for ways to solve the problem of ever increasing traffic congestion. Unfortunately, without a solution in sight. When the amount of cars on the roads dramatically increased in the mid-twentieth century, governments thought they had found an obvious solution - to expand the network of streets and highways. At the time this might have been the smart thing to do, but constant economic growth led to even more people owning cars. In Los Angeles, for example, the average amount of registered cars per resident increased tenfold between 1960 and now, a speed with which road construction simply can’t hold up. The obvious answer has always been the expansion of public transportation. Generous investments in modern vehicles, combined with subsidies on tickets for frequent travellers and a targeted information campaign would certainly convince people to take trains or busses instead of their cars. But sadly, authorities in many countries still don’t seem to have learned their lesson. To this day - possibly influenced by lobbyists working for car manufacturers and the construction industry - the investment into building new roads compared to upgrading public transportation is roughly five to one. But despite the knowledge that more roads only lead to more cars and, more importantly, the damage this inflicts on the environment, government officials keep on, literally, paving the road to ecological destruction. 230 words, and I still have to work on my speed. This took me almost an hour.

Thanks! I hate videos that take too long to get to the point. In my next videos I don't think I'll even have a 5-second logo or whatever. Just get straight into it!
I have a couple of questions. Firstly, my English teacher strictly tells me that phrasal verbs are too informal for formal writings such as essays. Also the whole introduction sounds too freely expressed, I am in no way a teacher, but it concerns me if it is formal enough like that.
I do like your teaching style and your tips are very useful for passing the CAE, thank you! You helped me a lot. Keep it going! P.S. This is my first comment on RUclips! :)
Yes! I'm creating an online course about C1 advanced writing right now. It's no-where near finished but if you want to test it and give me feedback, send me an email.
I don't think I'm able to do this. But I'lll try as soon as possible, because it is really short and easy to remember. (With all this material to study, you don't know how to sinthesize it.) 5 or 6 points are just what I want to remember on the day of the exam, but I don't get if you're writing something just to follow the grammar or if there is an idea behind it. (I literally have no idea of what to write about roads...) but I like grammar instead, and this can lead me somewhere even if it's nonsense. Thank you!
Your goal, basically, is to analyse the topic and come to a conclusion that the reader should agree with. 1) building more roads is expensive 2) it doesn't solve the problem 3) so let's not do that. It only seems hard because you haven't done it!
Not having the option to take the computer based exam should be a crime. How am I supposed to write such a good essay in 45 minutes if I just can't edit it as much as I want with agility? (Handwriting doesn't give you this luxury) And yes, there are a lot of exam centers that simply do not offer the computer based option, you're asking yourself this question...

Are there any tips somewhere similar to these in the writing, but for the speaking instead? I really appreciated the basic scheme that you gave for the writing, and I was wondering if there was something similar for the speaking... Thanks in advance.
Yes there's a famous tips website for the CAE exam. It's called CAE Exam Tips and can be found at caeexamtips.com . The website's creator is very handsome and funny, I'm told. Go there and click 'speaking' and you'll find more tips than there are stars in the universe.
Thank you for the amazing insight video on how to prepare the plan. I was wondering, apart from other conditionals, why did you only choose to include the 3rd conditional, is it specific to this topic or do 3rd conditionals carry more weight in terms of the points you get?
Most students can do the 1st and 2nd conditionals pretty easily - no particular need to mention them. The 3rd is harder, rarer, and thus more 'advanced'.
Hey, I really enjoy your videos! Thank you! I would certainly fail without them. There is also a question about the writing of an essay. Should I evaluate the two points discussed at once in the corresponding paragraphs or can I make it in the end? I'm asking because what I'm doing now is writing : "the proponents tend to think so and so ..... because"; "also the advocates state this and this... due to"; and only in the conclusion I say: "That is all good, but I have the opposite opinion because of that and that....". Is it a relevant structure?
Thanks! Your structure seems okay to me. I don't think I'd leave ALL the evaluating till the end because you're going to miss out on some nice structures and vocab that way.
"In conclusion, the thorny issue of congestion is not one that can be solved by repeating the same old mistakes, but one that needs to be tackled with imagination and forward-thinking." While I'm here, I realised that by adding the new sentence at 16:45 I should have changed the following sentence too. 'doing this' now refers to something from 2 sentences ago so it's a bit unclear. I'd fix that in the review section but I thought I'd mention it.
Hi there. I have a question related to the essay. I'd like to know about the body paragraphs of the essay and the way they should be developed. I do know they consist of a topic sentence and then? How can I develop each? By adding a reason and one example? Or two reasons? Or a reason and a contrasting idea?
Thank you so much Sir, your all vdos have helped me a lot. I would like to request you to make a vdo on "how to write proposals and reports"? Sample phrases and tips. And one vdo for "slow readers" :( tips and suggestions/ strategies. I would be so thankful to you.
+Jav Ria Hi, thanks for the request. I do have plans to make one about reports and proposals, but never quite find the time to sit and do it. Slow readers - not sure what I'd say. Just read faster! :)
Hi, I'm Claudia! thank you for all the hard work and dedication you put into your website and youtube channel, it's really helpful! I just have one question, I'm kind of worried about the planning and timing. What I mean is, how do I manage to make time to write down everything I need to plan it and then actually write the essay (and then rewrite it if i'm not happy with how some of it turned out)? Thanks again!
The idea of the planning stage is to make sure you don't have to rewrite anything. And don't use full sentences in the planning stage - stick to keywords and bullet points and so on. The MAIN thing is to practice it a few times. If you wrote one essay a day for the next week I think you'd stop worrying about the timing...
@@Caeexamtips I noticed I wrote " issues is" :)... anyway yeah, but I cant delete whatever I want at anytime I want without making a mess. Besides this, there is not an automatic count of the words as there is on the computer
@@nicolosalemi7344 Personally I would much prefer to use a computer but if I signed up for the paper test I'd write one a day for ten days before the exam to get used to it.
Hi Andrew, today I did my CAE exam and this was very useful!!! Hope i pass it, i´ll let you know! Anyway, thanks in advance! (LOL thats a really bad joke haha ). How much time would you say it is required for preparing CPE? TYYY
+Juan Palacio Ventura Hi and thanks! It depends on your current level but for my students who just finished CAE I normally suggest a year or 18 months. (They only have one lesson a week - of course it's possible to do it faster)
Ok thanks, I really appreciate you answering. When you refer to your students , you mean online or face to face students? In case you mean online, how could I be one of them? Thanks again for all, and congrats for your incredible website and yt channel!
+Juan Palacio Ventura I mean my face to face students. I don't have online students - I just make these videos from time to time. And thanks for the compliments!
How about the actual handwritten essays? It's difficult to change your text on paper. Thanks a lot for this video though, I think it will be of great use!
My writing style is different when I type and when I write - when handwriting I am slower and more careful and plan more. It's about getting into the right mindset. But I would probably choose the computer-based exam if I had to take the exam myself.
Thank you a lot for such incredibly useful videos . However ,could you explain ,please,as I’m not quite sure ,whether we should say the drawbacks of one point and the advantages of another? Or ,perhaps,it’s not always essential? I am interested whether you recommend to write both the advantages and disadvantages of different points?
Yes I would always write something positive and negative about each point. 'A is good because X. However, one problem with A is Y.' But I have seen good essays that didn't do that so it's not a rule.
Hello! Is it ok if in the intro i state the place where the topic has been brought up. So the into would go something like: "Traffic congestion is an important issue that cannot be ignored, especially in big cities, as it has a negative effect not only on the populace, but also on the environment. Recently, my class watched a television documentary on ways for government to reduce traffic congestion. From the ideas discussed, two of them stand out from the rest, more specifically the need for better public transport and the need for more roads. In the following paragraphs I will discuss these to ideas and then give my opinion on the best" Please tell me if this is good because I have my CAE exam in December, thank you!
I would advise you not to do that. Repeating things given in the rubric (the 'question') is mostly pointless - you don't need to tell your teacher that you discussed it in class. "Traffic congestion is an important issue that cannot be ignored, especially in big cities, as it has a negative effect not only on the populace, but also on the environment. In the following paragraphs I will discuss these two possible solutions and then give my opinion on the best"
+CAEexamtips , one more thing, I was also hoping that you could help me with writing part . What types of writing does it include? Proposal, report, review, letter(what kind of letter?), and is there a place where I can find the structure and maybe on example on those? Thank you very much and sorry for the constant questions, but I'm really stressed about my exam.
These kind of videos are awesome, really. I loved it! I think giving only tips without writing an actual essay is not as useful as these kind of practical lessons. Are there any chances of getting more videos on writing examples? :)
I'm thinking of creating a little online course that people can do. Something like '7 Days to Pass CAE' with worksheets and videos. It's still in the daydream phase though...
@@Caeexamtips Well, I can guarantee you I would be one of the many watching it :D Actually I would be watching it right now as I'll have the reading and use of English next week (trembling here!).
It'll cost money because I'll have to pay a dude to help me make it. Plus a designer probably. Not expensive though. Anyway, it'll take months and months to make. So for now: good luck!
Thanks a lot for the video! I have a question. I know that in academic writing we are not supposed to use phrasal verbs. So is there a list or some rules for phrasal verbs we can and cannot use in the essay?
Who said not to use phrasal verbs? You can use them, just avoid informal ones. Maybe this is what you're looking for: www.scribbr.com/academic-writing/47-phrasal-verbs-and-their-one-word-substitutions/
Question: Using pen and paper, though, as one must do in the exam, means must less flexibility and this kind of planning just isn’t possible. What are your thoughts on this? Or is it possible to choose to use a pc?
There's a computer-based exam. Where I live it seems to be the most popular option. I don't see why using pen and paper would be any different, though, except in my ability to record it and show it online.
Don't essay's always have to have 5 paragraphs instead of 3? (introduction, p1, p2, counter-arguments an conclusion) You fused everything together, is that aloud?
Hi, Yes it's allowed. You can do whatever you want as long as there is a logical structure that makes it easy for the reader to read the text and understand what you mean. Putting counter-arguments in a separate paragraph is possible but I prefer keeping pros and cons in the same paragraph.
Hey Andrew, hope you can answer this question in time! I have to take the paper based exam, so its harder for me to plan it like that. Do you have any tips for the the paper based essay? Like where and how to start?
Honestly it seems easier to me to plan on paper. I'm creating a writing workshop over on efl.academy which will be available for sale soonish. I go into detail about lots of things there.
Are you supposed to write your opinion ONLY when it is specified in the task? I have heard that there are different kinds of essays... Do you lose points for writing a personal opinion in the conclusion if you weren't explicitly asked to? Great video by the way!
It will always say something like 'discuss two of the ways' and 'explain which is more important'. That means giving your opinion about it. If you find an essay task that doesn't have anything like that, let me know!
I don't get something about your planning. You say we can fix and edit mistakes at the end but I'm not writing on a computer, how can I fix mistakes without transferring the whole essay to the main sheet?
You can cross words out and write new ones, and if you want to change whole sentences you put a star or a number (like writing a footnote) and the examiner will read the new sentence.
Interesting video ( thanks a lot for your time and work). One question : wouldn't a 3° conditional be '' WOULD HAVE LED '' instead of '' WOULD LEAD '' (in the 1st paragraph) ?
Thanks for the answer, nevertheless, I guess I didn't catch you ... Or may be I was not clear enough with my question. In other words, at 5:47 would it be also acceptable to write : '' Had the governments of the past known that building more roads WOULD HAVE LED to more traffic, they might not have ... '' ? Or what you wrote : '' WOULD LEAD to more traffic, ...'' is the ONLY relevant option ?
@@phchoucri1 Focus on the main bits and you get: Had they known, they might not have wasted. That's a 3rd conditional structure. The would lead/would have led dilemma is a different issue. That's what I meant by 'after the comma'. With conditionals you normally have a before the comma bit and an after the comma bit. It's hard to explain in a youtube comment!

Okay! So there are phrasal verbs more formal that could fit in essays.
Where's the conclusion? D:
And thanks for the compliments!
i fucking love you Andrew
How about the actual handwritten essays? It's difficult to change your text on paper.
Thanks a lot for this video though, I think it will be of great use!
My writing style is different when I type and when I write - when handwriting I am slower and more careful and plan more. It's about getting into the right mindset. But I would probably choose the computer-based exam if I had to take the exam myself.
+CAEexamtips Oh I see, is whether you make it on a computer or on paper a matter of choice? Or does that depend on the 'exam council'?
Maybe in small exam centres it's one or the other, but where I live you can choose.
CAEexamtips ,Thank you)
Hello! Is it ok if in the intro i state the place where the topic has been brought up. So the into would go something like:
"Traffic congestion is an important issue that cannot be ignored, especially in big cities, as it has a negative effect not only on the populace, but also on the environment. Recently, my class watched a television documentary on ways for government to reduce traffic congestion. From the ideas discussed, two of them stand out from the rest, more specifically the need for better public transport and the need for more roads. In the following paragraphs I will discuss these to ideas and then give my opinion on the best"
Please tell me if this is good because I have my CAE exam in December, thank you!
CAEexamtips thank you very much
+CAEexamtips , one more thing, I was also hoping that you could help me with writing part . What types of writing does it include? Proposal, report, review, letter(what kind of letter?), and is there a place where I can find the structure and maybe on example on those? Thank you very much and sorry for the constant questions, but I'm really stressed about my exam.
Sir we think sometimes feelling blank with our style of writing when we try to write on advance topic. Your stepwise activity turn the difference
@@Caeexamtips Well, I can guarantee you I would be one of the many watching it :D
Actually I would be watching it right now as I'll have the reading and use of English next week (trembling here!).
It'll cost money because I'll have to pay a dude to help me make it. Plus a designer probably. Not expensive though. Anyway, it'll take months and months to make. So for now: good luck!
@@Caeexamtips It should cost money, of course. Just like the Joker once said: "If you're good at something, never do it for free" :D
Thank you!
Andrew Girardin thank you very much, I think that is what I was looking for)
Question: Using pen and paper, though, as one must do in the exam, means must less flexibility and this kind of planning just isn’t possible. What are your thoughts on this? Or is it possible to choose to use a pc?
There's a computer-based exam. Where I live it seems to be the most popular option. I don't see why using pen and paper would be any different, though, except in my ability to record it and show it online.
Thank you !!
CAEexamtips thank you so much for replying!!! i'll keep an eye out for tricky tasks xx
Okay, thank you a lot!
Thanks a lot!!!
Errr...Sir! Is there a writing story task i FCE? Please let me know!!!
A comment from Vietnam
There is one in 'First for Schools' I think, but not in the normal FCE exam.
you're funny. i loved it! really useful!!!! thanks
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome!

Interesting video ( thanks a lot for your time and work).
One question : wouldn't a 3° conditional be '' WOULD HAVE LED '' instead of '' WOULD LEAD '' (in the 1st paragraph) ?
Not quite - the 'have' bit comes after the comma.
Got it, thanks so much.

If you wrote a word like "government" wrong what can I expect :( , great explanation!!
Are YOU rich, but single? Haha thanks though, this helped me a lot!
+Marianne Van Der Heiden Kinda rich, kinda not single...
