CAPPADOCIA GREEN TOUR - Underground City (Derinkuyu) & Ihlara Valley | TURKEY

  • A popular activity to do in Cappadocia is one of the sightseeing group tours (either green, red or blue - although blue has mostly been discontinued).
    There are many operators and travel agencies that offer these tours and they all seem to follow a very similar itinerary. In this vlog we take you along for our Green tour experience and what you can expect to see and do during the trip.
    💚 Our Green Tour included the following stops 💚
    1. Pigeon Valley
    We already ventured here on our own previously so didn't showcase it much in this video. Watch our Pigeon Valley vlog here instead ➡️ • Why UCHISAR should be ...
    2. Jewellery store
    This wasn't mentioned as part of the original itinerary and one we personally would've preferred wasn't included so we could spend longer at the actually sightseeing locations.
    3. Derinkuyu Underground City
    We were originally suppose to go to Kaymaklı Underground City but because our van had a popped tire we ended up at Derinkuyu instead.
    4. Narlı Göl
    Also known as Nar Lake. It's a volcanic crater lake and was a short scenic stop in our tour. From a bird's eye view it looks like a heart shape.
    5. Ala Church
    One of the largest cave churches in Cappadocia where you can still make out some of the paintings on its domed ceilings and arches.
    6. Ihlara Valley
    We came here for a short easy hike to our lunch spot next to the river. Lunch was included in our tour package but drinks were an additional cost.
    7. Selime Monastery
    An impressive rock monastery which later became a caravanserai. We really enjoyed getting to climb around and through it.
    8. Turkish Delight store
    This also wasn't mentioned as part of the original itinerary but it was a nice and sweet finish to the day!

    Derinkuyu is a sheer engineering feat - certainly one of the underground wonders of the world! Some say it once housed up to 50,000 people.
    Folklore has it that Derinkuyu could be well over 12,000 years old, built to protect inhabitants against alien visitations/invasions in ancient times (the so-called "ancient aliens theory").
    Regardless of when, how, and why it was built, Derinkuyu is undoubtedly a fascinating place. Even though I have claustrophobia, somehow I feel drawn to caves and underground structures. Your video has inspired me to visit one day too. Keep up with the engaging content! 🙂

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  Год назад +1

      Ooooo how interesting protection against aliens 👽 😯 it certainly was an interesting place to see in person. But now that we've left I'm super curious to know whether it was hot in the tunnels because of the amount of people living in there or cold cause it never saw sun light 🤔 there must be so many mysteries we still don't know.
      Hope you get to visit one day too, it's always awesome seeing bucket list locations.

      By the way, I'll be back in Auckland for about 7 weeks in January/February 2023. Will you two be back in Auckland then? Would love to meet up! I'll drop you an email at some stage with further details. Been away from NZ for over 5 years now - and my parents are now in their 70s - so I guess it's the right thing to do (being an only son and all) to go back for a visit. 😛

    Ever the research and deal master is Peter 😁😁😁 Very cool to see the blue dragonfly😁😁😁... Haha I agree...the gem store would not have been at the top of my list, but cool nonetheless.. The underground city on the other hand was very cool... Though did look quite crowded down there. The world needs another pandemic...not one that kills people, just one that keeps people at home a bit so travel can be empty again 😁... By chance do you know how the underground city residents used the bathroom? Is there a deeper hole somewhere? Whenever I see old old old places my mind wanders to what the bathroom experience was like 😳.. Looks like it was a long tour, but a great one! Looking forward to the next vid!

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  Год назад

      Hahaha actually usually I'm super curious about the bathroom situation too! But didn't think to ask about it at the time 😕 I'm gonna need to research it. My favourite bathroom fact is that during the Roman times since there was no toilet paper people would share a communal sponge 😂😂
      Oooo yeah the dragonfly so cool right! Couldn't get the perfect shot but yeah... what species do you think it might be?

    • @SeoulMan2020

      From when you first mentioned the dragonfly, and now actually seeing it...beautiful demoiselle? Whatever it was, very cool looking dragonfly...or I guess if it was a beautiful demoiselle it would be a very cool looking damselfly?

    I love that this beautiful and kind couple is visiting my country. Under normal circumstances, tourists who come to our country recognize Turks as racist, vulgar and Arab, but we are none of them. Enjoy fine food and amazing culture. You will want to come again :) By the way, if your travel list is still empty, I would love to see the places in the east of Turkey. In the east you will find mesopotamia

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  Год назад +1

      Thank you Erden 🙏 We don't really understand the vast difference in perception that some people have because we found Turkish people so kind and friendly! ❤️ As tourists and visitors to other's countries we should always try our best to respect the culture and people and learn about where we are. It's why we always at the very least learn how to speak a few common phrases (hello, thank you etc) of wherever we visit. Can't expect everyone to know English but often people do (which is silly) and some become arrogant this way so sometimes situations turn sour I suppose. We really loved our time traveling all around Türkiye! We unfortunately left eastern Türkiye for a future travel but we definitely want to come back one day to explore that side 😊🤞 we still have many videos to share of our time in Türkiye though so we hope you'll enjoy them ☺️
