Good to hear the two of you back; my son and me are similar ages to the two of you and we share a passion for music, and he's much more interested in songs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, than a lot of current stuff. One recommendation often overlooked because his life was cut short after three albums after a tragic plane crash: Jim Croce, whose songwriting, guitar-playing and powerful and emotional voice was unparalleled. Suggestions: Operator, Time in a Bottle, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song, I Got a Name and Box #10. He is the antidote for people who prefer singers with great voices. Best to hear him both in studio and live, as he and his partner were just as brilliant live as in studio, and having an audience meant seeing Jim's personality, which was equal shares powerful, vulnerable and fun.

Stevie Nicks wrote this song about the death of her uncle and the death of John Lennon. The line about the "Words from a poet and a voice from a choir" refers to Lennon.
Nicks spoke about the "white-winged dove" and what this song means to her: "It became a song about violent death, which was very scary to me because at that point no one in my family had died. To me, the white-winged dove was for John Lennon the dove of peace, and for my uncle it was the white-winged dove who lives in the saguaro cactus - that's how I found out about the white-winged dove, and it does make a sound like whooo, whooo, whooo. I read that somewhere in Phoenix and thought I would use that in this song. The dove became exciting and sad and tragic and incredibly dramatic. Every time I sing this song I have that ability to go back to that two-month period where it all came down. I've never changed it, and I can't imagine ending my show with any other song. It's such a strong, private moment that I share in this song."
Stevie came up with the title when she asked Tom Petty's wife Jane when the couple met. Jane said, "At the age of seventeen," but she had a very strong southern accent and Stevie thought she said "the edge of seventeen," which makes a great song title. Telling the story in a 1981 interview with Los Angeles disc jockey Robert W. Morgan, Nicks said she told Jane: "It's got to be 'edge.' 'The Edge of Seventeen' is perfect. I'm going to write a song."

Dave , I’m going play devils advocate. I like Fleetwood Mac but this song by Stevie Nicks is not a favorite. It has a nice groove , but honestly after a couple minutes it becomes redundant and I want it to wrap up.

This is a great song. Stevie Nicks is just so good.
The simplicity of the driving riff really works so well. The guitarist is Waddy Wachtel, a renowned session guy who worked with many artists over the years .
Her first solo album outside of Fleetwood Mac, Bella Donna, is consistently great throughout. Another standout track from that is Stop Draggin' My Heart Around with Tom Petty's Heartbreakers. She repeated it with them on I Will Run To You on her second album The Wild Heart.
Other stand out tracks by her that are well worth checking out are Sara, Storm, Gypsy and Sisters Of The Moon and Rhiannon with Fleetwood Mac.

She did some great stuff with other artists as well, like this suggestion: John Stewart (ft. Stevie Nicks) - Gold ruclips.net/video/reFlgu1vq3Q/видео.html. Cheers!

Thanks for doing some Stevie Nicks, this is one of her best early solo songs from 1981. She and boyfriend at the time Lindsey Buckingham were originally a duo from California until they joined the remnants of British blues band Fleetwood Mac in 1975, and it turned into this international pop/rock supergroup. The guitarist on this was Waddy Wachtel, who also played my favourite all-time guitar solo on Stevie's Long Way To Go in 1989, and I recommend the 12" extended version of that. Another great early song from her is a duet with the late Tom Petty called Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, backed by Tom's band The Heartbreakers and from the same 1981 album Bella Donna as Edge of Seventeen.
My suggestion for your next Fleetwood Mac reaction would be Go Your Own Way, from the same famous Rumours album of 1977 The Chain finished off, because you need to hear a Lindsey Buckingham composition. Incidentally, most of Stevie's songs were usually finished with Lindsey's help as she starts by writing poetry about her thoughts and feelings, and then puts music to the verses, and that's where Lindsey used to help out. Edge of Seventeen was written in response to the death of her uncle and the murder of John Lennon around the same time.
Great reaction, and lookup Fleetwood Mac and The Heartbreakers in the Rock Family Trees book for tons more info!

I think I'm mostly with you about the song (and vocals), Ethan.
When keeping a steady rhythm going throughout the song, adding in layer after layer of instruments can help keep the song fresh as it progresses along, and I like how they did that here. The piano and drum layers especially stand out to me.
Musically, Post-Metal/rock sometimes does the same thing. If you ever get around to listening to music in those genres, you may notice a part of a song lasting for a good while, but the layers/sound effects underneath those parts change as it progresses. This sort of reminded me of that.
I actually like raspy vocals in general, especially depending on the tone of the music. But I think I can see what you mean, too, in how you prefer vocalists use raspy vocal tones in certain segments of the song to enhance and bring an extra layer of emotion, rather than just sing with a raspy voice throughout the song when it doesn't necessarily call for a raspy voice?
I personally like it when vocalists go raspy (or "raw") in their vocal tones, as I feel like they project an extra layer of power and emotion with it (as you mentioned with Stevie Nicks here). Couple of my favorite vocalists (Trent Reznor and Julie Christmas; among others) present a same kind of rawness to their vocal style, and I absolutely love it with their music. Haha
(Also, maybe it's part of why I really enjoy harsh vocals in metal music. Super powerful, raw energy mixed with the music. It's like another layer of emotion added into the composition).
Overall, with the song, I thought it was fine. Good, fun song, but maybe not something I personally would listen to every day. Very good music, and the layers did help add to it, but I felt the song mostly remained about the same tone throughout and I guess I was hoping for more variation.
Despite that, though, I thought this was enjoyable because the music was fun, the added layers were great, and the vocals throughout were great, too.
Great reaction, guys! Have a great rest of the weekend, and hope you enjoyed the Nightwish show a ton last Sunday! :)

I know this song and wish I didn't. The best Fleetwood Mac came from a period when Stevie Nicks wasn't even in the band. This song wants me to go to an edge of a cliff. How about trying out Dragonfly by Fleetwood Mac? It was before Nicks and Buckingham, but after Peter Green left the band.
