    Well, I know how that damage happened to my Thump.....I dropped it while setting up for a gig. It had fallen before with no issue. But this time...well. I watched this video while trying to figure why it wouldn't come on after the accident and saw the same diode damage shown here. Thank you for this video.

    Bought a new 2018 Mackie Thump 12A 1300 watt for a personal vocal monitor to hear my self more clearly and most of all more loudly.
    Already running 1200 watt peavey amp into 2 peavy passive 15 inch speakers. Its level has been loud enough for years but i knew I needed to hear myself better to perform better and avoid vocal fatigue. Its not loud enough and disappears as soon as we start playing. Tried different cables, dynamic and live condenser mics etc. Mic gain and mon both up at 90% then starts feeding back at 100. Sounds ok when no one else is playing. Plays music from phone or ipad much louder than singing. Were not crazy loud either. Loud but not intrusively or out of the ordinary for a rock band. This thing would be great for kareoke or an acoustic quieter band but not for rock music. Talked to several techs who were all confused from different companies. Finally received a replacement and its exactly the same. 1300 watts should be blowing my hair back. Is one powered wedge usually good enough or do you absolutely need 2? Never had many problems on stage hearing myself on 1 of the houses though they were not self powered. We have an old powered old JBL 500 watt or or something that's around 30% louder and lower watts.
    Anyone else experience this with Mackie or any other mfgs? Is this normal? Thanks!

    Again, a very interesting video! I love your videos. Especially those where you repair speakers and PA gear. Would it be possible for you, making a video in which you show your PA equipement (speakers, mixers,...)? I think that would be very interesting! Greetings from Germany :)

  • @oldblokeh
    @oldblokeh 6 лет назад +2

    Maybe the failure was caused by vibrational flexing of the circuit board in response to speaker output and it's simply a fatigue failure? It looks as if there is room along that edge of the board for an additional mounting hole, and I'd be inclined to add one, if possible. Nice video, thanks.

    • @malgailany
      @malgailany 6 лет назад

      oldblokeh in addition, maybe it is stressed when bolting the diode to the heatsink during assembly time.

      I would guess the speaker was dropped, and the board flexed due to massive transformer.

    Hello, it is nice video on PA speaker issue diagnosis. Question - I have a mackie Thump12a speaker. When connect to music source, there a very feeble high frequency music heard from twitter but the woofer doesn’t sound. But observed that momentarily the sounds right for a second from woofer and goes back to feeble sound. This happens couple of times in first 2-3 minutes. I feel it could some kind of protection override. Any suggestions?

    Where did you happen to find the schematic to the 15a because that is what I have and I'm having the same issue you are having sort of. Mine has to do with the over load continues to come on after powering up and a lot of folks have pointed to the q104 transistor and the capacitor. Any feed back you could share would be great and if you let me know your find on the schematic. By the way great video. Need more valuable videos like yours and valuable people like you in this world. Thanks again.

      Google is your friend. Look for "mackie th-15a schematic". I bet you will find it in a few clicks.

  • @leisergeist
    @leisergeist 6 лет назад +1

    So the usual cause of that high freq clicking is a lack of feedback huh? That'll probably help me solve an old shelved power supply issue..
    Thanks for the videos :)

    • @Agent24Electronics
      @Agent24Electronics 6 лет назад

      It's one of them. A shorted rectifier or load is also likely, or a bad startup capacitor, among other things.

    Hello There Sir. I watched your video and quite interesting, because I have the same speaker, it turns on ok but no sound comming out of the speaker... the voltages are OK in both power supply board connectors out (CON3 +28V/GND/-28V and also Ok in the the other Connector out - low voltages). Of course everything is well connected, woofer is ok,
    but no sound on the 12'' drive or in the HF Tweeter... Any ideia of what could be wrong or what (and how) can I check to see if i can pinpoint the problem? Kind Regards

    Hello Mate, I have a Mackie SMR 650 active speaker it stopped working on my gig. The fuse hasn't blown. I opened it and checked it. Today I took it to a friend and we tested it out, no power. we opened it and disconnected the circuits from both boards and turned the amp on and left it for 2 minutes and turned it off. I reconnected both the boards and there was a spark. The amp turned ON. I tested it 4 times and it worked. I screwed it back in only the 3 screws from the back. It stopped working. can some one help me. I have an open circuit please helo

    I have a thump 15a and It works perfect for as long as it is on. Then If I turn off and want to turn on to use right away it won't work for a few days. Then try again and it does work perfectly. Switch, cord, speakers are fine. I was wondering what component could cause that ? Would you gimme an idea where to look at ? Thanks Favio

    +-30V for these speakers. It's a joke. Mackie, your old devices have been much better designed. These look like crappy Chinese karaoke systems inside. The PCB quality is awful

    • @ProdigalPorcupine
      @ProdigalPorcupine 6 лет назад +1

      N-audio - Like everyone else they’re jumping on the Class D bandwagon. It saves them money at the expense of quality. When the output chip fails, it’s a whole new pcb from Mackie. I guess any old cheap class D module from China could be grafted in at a pinch, it’s not like it could be much worse!
