Congratulations James! So glad you were the one to buy the Alberg, it need the right owner. Thanks for the postcard from Hawaii, I am glad you made it there safe, kind of! Keep living your dream, we get one chance in life, so go for the stars! All the Best, Stefan
Wow crazy how you speak of loosing a rudder at the beginning, it happened and you handled it like a pro in one of the most remote passages without anywhere to stop in an emergency. Awesome sailing bruddah, Aloha 🤙
The definition of a good deal is when the seller walks away happy and the buyer sails away happy. Good luck with the refit and enjoy you new adventure.
Going back and watching the first one… Live how the previous owner says “I hope you go around the word” at 13:40. What you have done is a huge inspiration. Thank you James
Strange -- when I first saw your video I thought you were scary looking and maybe a dangerous kinda guy. Now that I have watched your videos I realize that you are such a good man. More guys like you please and the world would be a better place. :)
I searched this video out on your channel. I wondered how you landed on Triteia and exactly why. Dude! You have been my inspiration for the last several years and literally why I moved this dream into my reality from just a dream to learn how to sail. Ive Just been getting to know my 1979 Watkins 27, Shoal draft, Keel on Skeg (bout a 4 foot draft. Yanmar 2 cyl 12 hp. primo. Im beside myself that she (Quest) is mine. Just blown out man. Been crew on some of these races out here. She is moored with power and I am live aboard ft. Thanks again my friend. Im looking to be learning sooo much on this crazy lake in North Idaho. Dreaming of the ocean. much love to you and Rhonda. Y'all are doing awesome. Be seeing you.
Hey Cappy. I got my first sailboat like two years ago and it took two years to fix and rig her; she is just like a Sunfish: a $125, 1967 Sears Fleetwind ,12’ or so in length. Anyways, the sailing principles are there. Three failed launches/sails and then bam: totally got it. Can’t wait to get a bigger sailboat or yacht coming June 2024 or so. Your channel rocks, man: inspiring and intresting. P.S.: Sorry to hear your lady ran off: although I haven’t been married at age 34, I’ve had many ladies impatient run off and disappear. No fun.
The part of losing your rudder made me laugh, just thinking about your cross ocean to Hawaii. You handled it really well, even though you thought you didn't know what to do. I am interested to see where you started from where you have gotten.
@@SailorJames I’m currently watching your French Polynesia video right now. Hope you stay safe bro you have helped me with a lot since I got my boat a couple years ago. Since then my life has changed so much. My wife left after a decade cause she claims she likes women now but turned out to just be in drugs since she left. I’m glad I got my boat and it really is more than you may think to have videos like this to check out and learn what I can from. Have a good man be safe
I know this is a old video and I’ve been watching you sail for a while now, but I still had a smile ear to ear watching you get your boat brother. I’m in the process you were before you got her. Hunting for the right fit and specs for my family and I.
Dude, I just starting watching you channel from the solo trip to Hawaii to Australia. So naturally I gotta check out your first video. Then I see that you’re in Wilmington!!! My hood! Badass
Well done. A labour of love coming your way. The owner was over the boat and had no interest in its upkeep. I get the feeling he was as eager to get rid of her as you were to make her yours.
YOU GOT YOUR SELF A VERY GOOD VESSEL !! SHE IS A VERY GOOD SEA BOAT.it'll TAKE SOME GOOD TLC TO BRING HER BACK TO BE THE BEAUTY SHE IS.YOU CAN DO IT, AND SHE WILL REWARD YOU WITH FANTASTIC SAILING DAYS !!!ALL THE BEST TO YOU, TAKE CARE !!!
Your boat is perfect and other than some small stuff go wrong your boat has taken you everywhere you wanted to go she’s the right fit for you and it’s really nice boat park
James you have come along ways since this video was made to where you are now sailing through the Equator and into the South Pacific Ocean That is something to Mighty proud of Well done you
G'day James. I'm new to the channel and enjoyed a few of your recent passages. To see this video which is the inception of your voyages is quite humbling. You have gone far mate and I'm glad you are realising your dreams. I too nearly died from pneaumonia; however, missed out on the dream realisation, I'll live it through you. Fair winds
I am going back to the start of your journey James, and yes mate immediately I get your understanding re wanting an older boat just like enjoying old cars. Having grown up in the 60s-80s I get that. My two classic Italian cars are from ‘69. Up until some years ago all my cars were from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Re boats to me it’s no different, the boat I race on was built in ‘74 and is a classic 30ft IOR boat. While i don’t own it yet, I suspect it is inevitable I will soonish as the owner is elderly and is keen for me to do so. It has a lot of offshore and cruising history and having maintained the boat for the past couple of years I have bonded with it. I know she is strong and well equipped. Ok, now back to the current time and your adventures in the Pacific. 😁👍 Fair winds brother.
i have a Alberg 30 also. bought her 3 years ago. hull number 570. i absolutely love that boat. the one problem i had was with weather helm. nearly drove me nuts. turns out the mainsail was just too old and baggy. i did not have the money at the time for a new mainsail but had a brand new sail from my former boat, a Oday 27. the luff was the same length but the foot was 3.5 feet shorter. i put in on anyway and holy fuck....no weather helm, no more early reefing, same speed in low wind condition. it was hard to understand why but i will surely not go back to that massive original sail. i live in Big Pine Key florida and we where ground zero for irma's landfall. everything around here is destroyed. i had her tied up in a narrow canal to some mangroves. the first six hours before we went into the eye the wind (gusts up to 178 mph) pushed her into the mangroves and started to roll her over he mangroves. at times the top of the mast touched the ground. after six hours the mangroves where totally crushed and gone but the lines did not fail. when it was all over on monday morning i checked out the damage: 3 bend stanchions, mahogany top rail shaved of in some spots and a few scratches in the gel coat. those Albergs can not be destroyed. I now love her even more with her scars, lol.
Whoa that is really interesting about the weather helm! I know big bottom girls can be fighters but this is a really good thing to hear from someone who has first hand experience of fighting your boat before and after. I wonder if it had anything to do with the smaller sail also creating something of a lower aspect ratio (even though it didn't go higher) or if it was like you said a result of the main being to old and stretched out. My mainsail is the original so I am sure she has a more relaxed shape than she did in 1965. Are there photos of your Alberg 30 online anywhere? I would love to see it! How terrific about Irma I am so glad to hear she weathered the storm, so many yachts didn't, seems like the mangroves acted like a large fender and have a lot more give than a dock thats for sure. Glad she didn't suffer too much damage, and our scars are declarations of capability! Fair Winds!
The top of my list is an A30! I am re-watching all your Triteia vids. This time, watching you walk the dock, toward your boat brought teats to. Y eyes. I am just starting my boat search... I hope I can find that gem of an Alberg.
I messed up buying my boat. I went too old. 1906 double diagonal was just too much for my skills or pocket. I will get anothet one and this channel will no doubt help my choices
Its always s great feeling buying your first boat. And after you put some love and sweat equity in her...I'm sure you'll know her very well. I can't want for your shakedown cruise! PEACE OUT!
Great sea boats. Best of luck on your happy adventures, nothing better. I own a Rival 32 back in the UK and whilst a bit younger it has similar lines, long keel, thick glass layup and great sea boat. Best of luck. Andy
Just climbing now on board for your adventure. I am not a sailor but a dreamer, not a vlogger but a writer, and prefer to watch others work than....I did my share. Optimism, Attitude, Good Goals, you have these in your favor, and a human interest that runs as deep as the sea. I'll be watching, enjoying, and complimenting as well as defending. Otherwise....
Thanks Ron, I recently saw a t-shirt that said "Don't Give Up Your Day Dream" which i thought was perfect! Dreamers are good! thanks for the kind words and I hope you enjoy the future videos!
Yeah sometimes when I am filming I feel like it should be listed under "SlowTV" but I love watching that kind of stuff. I could seriously watch someone fiberglass an entire engine bay without sound for hours hahaha
As someone looking to do what you are currently doing, I look forward to seeing your journey unfold! Congrats and subscribed! On to Ep. 2! Cheers from N.E. Florida!
Five years on… I’m always curious to see if the dream has been realized, still working in it (my current situation, lol!!) or if the dream died… hopefully you’re out there making that dream a reality!!
I just found your channel and subscribed. Like you I just bought a plastic classic, an Allied Seabreeze 35. for 4K. I am anxious to get going as I am 67 and want to see the Galapagos.
Wonderdull? I think there's a Freudian slip there somewhere, akin to your comment about watching someone fiberglass for hours. For sailors, its catnip!
Been watching your videos as of recently. Just caught this one. Definitely earned a sub my dude! I getting closer to getting my sailboat. I'm super excited. Really appreciate you sharing your hard work and journey. All the best Joseph
Just found your channel and think it's very informative and interesting. I am not a sailor myself but I am a boat guy and love to fish saltwater and have a place on the coast but not deep enough for a sailboat to sail out of. Stay safe and enjoy the winds.
Really excellent watching you explain things. You love sailing life -- QUESTION -- Some sailboats that I see have the rudder sort of hanging off the back of the boat. Example, this GGR race has Rustlers and Saga 36 and they have this strange looking rudder that comes all the way up the back of the boat. Your one is under water on the skeg.. What do you think of the Saga/rustler type rudders? Are they prone to damage or are they better?
In some ways transom slung rudders are good because you can have such a big rudder but you are right, they can get damaged more easily than one that is attached to the keel
@@SailorJames ..kinda thought that may be the case. The GGR, which I am soft of addicted to watching, only allows older boats under 36 and some seem to have that rudder for some reason. Weird. Would you ever consider racing around the world with your Alberg?
Oh the excitement of a new boat and a classic to boot! I agree about fin keel boats, I prefer boats that will sit on their own ass even if that entails beaching legs! A relatively shallow long keel is next best to a bilger or a lifting keel! Fin keelers are simply a non starter for serious explorers as far as I am concerned! Well wear! SkipRay.
Amazing. That's what I played for my cascade 29. But it was in operational condition so I lucked out there. But it has many things you didn't want. A bolt on keel and spade rudder which I knew wasn't good but for the price I couldn't refuse.
A reply to my own posting. My cascade 29 has a 4 cylinder 15 HP westerbeke diesel that runs good. However they quit making them in 1979. The boats a 74.
Very good reasoning - your thinking matches the boat (mine is #272 built in '67) Best of luck and think about joining the Chesapeake Bay Alberg 30 Association - lots of A30 experience there.
Thanks Mike, stoked to hear you have #272! I contacted them and when I have some extra cash that I am not putting into my boat (i know it never stops, but) I will join the Association!
Curious what you think about a full keep with a swing keel built into it. Looking at a Luders 28 Offshore that has this setup Amazing videos as always !
I met a sailor in Bermuda who had just arrived from North Carolina as crew on a Tartan 34 with a bronze centerboard and he said the centerboard sounded like it was going to rip out of the boat most of the ocean passage and they boat wasn't able to sail on until after it was being repaired. I personally wouldnt want to sail a centerboard boat across oceans, unless it was from a company like KM Yachts and was a new build, but thats just me.
Congrats! I had a very similar boat (Pearson Vanguard) that was literally a twin of the Alberg 30. I got rid of it after my kids were born due to no time to sail or work on it. But I plan to retire in a few years (still young) and want to get another classic plastic eventually.
Vanguards are so great ! I was mostly looking for a Triton when I came across this A30. Theres another beautiful boat waiting for you when you are ready !
What a coincidence. I bought hull #517, also dark blue hull built in 1972 in May of 2017 for a similar amount. Mine has a tempermental Atomic 4 in it which I hope to replace soon. She sure is fun to sail, though. I look forward to future video's. Phil
Phil, That is awesome! do you have photos of it on instagram or anywhere? I would love to see it! Thats rad we bought them at almost the same time! where do you sail out of? Yeah you should switch out that A4 with a Yanmar Diesel engine. There are videos coming of me pulling my old 2gm20 and then replacing it with a 2gm20f... A dirty job but very rewarding in the end ! Fair Winds!
Oh the foreshadowing at 2:33 I've been watching your more recent videos and popped back to this, well ill just say that as much as I find you impressive, there is that spark in all humans, there is no need to live in a prison of the mind, and I hope to buy my first boat next month, a spirit 28, I'm just apprehensive about the 1.55m keel. Any thoughts?
crazy right? I was so stressed out driving there hoping it wouldn't sell before I arrived. I was so stoked once I signed the papers and had the slip in my name !
I started with a similar bargain boat (Najade900 1968) two years ago. A year later I sold it for a Mallard Etendard Ketch (also 1968). I'm on to my third boat, an Etap 30i from 1997, which I absolutely adore.
Alberg 30 was designed for a group of Folkboat 26 owners that wanted something that would sail as well as the folkboat, but was bigger. There is one for sale here in Honolulu, but I am basically a 64 year old day sailor. It would be wasted on me. I'll stick to my Hobie Tandem Island to get my sailing fix. But enjoy!
Great buy.. I'd rip engine out and install an outboard in a well at the stern. There's a guy who did a complete refit after travelling the world in his 30.. It's on RUclips somewhere, I'll try find the link for you
Hi James, I have watched a lot of vids to do with buying fixer uppers and I think you have a very interesting project here. Speaking as someone who has been working on a very small restoration myself, I can see what lies ahead of you and feel sure you will enjoy it and end up with a very nice boat. Over here in the UK I think a bilge keel craft would be a good option, but for the oceans around the US and beyond you have made the right choice. Those fin keels and rudders just look too delicate. I look forward to following your progress. Keep on keeping on.
I dig all the double keel boats in the UK, I bet they are rather slow but handy when the tides pull way out! We have a holiday weekend coming up and I am looking forward to getting into some more projects on my A30!
Have you seen secondchancesailing channel? they have found out how useful a double keel is on a few occasions. There are a lot of drying harbours here, so very suitable. Look forward to the updates.
That boat is so sweet. I'm sure you have fun cleaning her up. I noticed the bilge was completely dry. I"ve looked at many boats, many with inches of water. They always used the line that it rained last night. What were the top three boats on your list?
my bilge has a constant presence of nuisance water due to the inevitable prop shaft drip drip drip, but thats just part of having a boat with an inboard motor. My top three boats were Pearson Triton (27), Alberg 30, Tartan 34
Sailor James, One might say a steal of a deal but it was at least & indeed, a fair deal, in that you got the basic vessel and it appeared sound. And with the work you put into her it will respond quickly. As I've noted on mine, #614 '77, there were a lot of hands in the pot for many years and quite a few previous skippers made their decisions and left their mark. I hope my efforts, like yours, will produce a more coherent flow above and below decks. The seller was quite overjoyed to be done with her and from the condition of the hull below water, did little with this classic Alberg. But each skipper has their ups and downs, and at least he was fair to you. Am following your process with interest. We can share ideas I'm sure.
Awesome, I just subscribed and look forward to checking out your boat and videos! Yes I was lucky in that regard it seems like my boat has only had a few owners before me. There are very few modifications done to her over the years but i did pull out hundreds of feet of 1980's lamp cord which the entire vessel was wired with. I will check out your videos this weekend! thanks for the comment Bill!
I had the same feelings and thoughts when I searched for my Pearson Triton. I love it. I took my 150 hour Yanmar 1GM 10 out of my Triton to make the James Baldwin outboard conversion. So I have a beautiful 9hp Yanmar for sale. If you know anyone.
James- An Alberg 30 has popped up in my neighborhood for next to nothing! I had sworn I wouldn't own a boat with an inboard( may seem crazy) atom voyages has a seg. on making an outboard in the aft lazorette. Which has me considering it!
I'm going catamaran for several reasons. Not as tipsy, more deck area, no sideways sailing, and faster sailing. 35 to 40 footer is my range. I've sailed classic plastic many times and prefer a cat. I grew up sailing in fl. I would take my tiny 12ft open deck sail out 3 miles ofthe gulf beaches as a 10yr old kid. Alot of fiberglass classic plastic around here for cheap, but if I'm gonna strike off one day I gotta have comfort and quality.
Its my first season on my privateer 26 , had your same thought process, get ready find a giant list of to does. My only suggestion, is tackle each project one or two at a time. Right now Im stuck on a mooring can, fixing my ignition and steering cables. Best of luck! Also where you sailing out of ?
My guy was chuckling like he didn’t believe you were going around the world, lol!!
Enjoying your content so much I had to go and see where it all started.

Wonderdull? I think there's a Freudian slip there somewhere, akin to your comment about watching someone fiberglass for hours. For sailors, its catnip!
now thats the face of a happy man.
I'm from Philippines. For now on, I found my purpose on this planet. Hoping one day, I can sail around the world.
Been watching your videos as of recently. Just caught this one. Definitely earned a sub my dude! I getting closer to getting my sailboat. I'm super excited. Really appreciate you sharing your hard work and journey. All the best
Joseph
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Captain James and SV Triteia. Adventures await us.
Handshake..”I hope you go around the world”. I will…I will!
I had an Alberg 30 a few years back. Great boats. I wish you joy of your new purchase.
Just found your channel and think it's very informative and interesting. I am not a sailor myself but I am a boat guy and love to fish saltwater and have a place on the coast but not deep enough for a sailboat to sail out of. Stay safe and enjoy the winds.
Just found your channel and I had to start at the beginning, after watching you cross over to Hawaii.
Great to see new sailors in my area . Subbed and following.
Thanks for subscribing!
Cool old boat and you get to hang out in Wilmington. Fun to see a youtuber in familiar places.
What a steal ! Very nice ! Oh and you can jump that up to 1973 and prior for most boats being hand laid....... lol
Nothing wrong with my 1973...... a tank and I like it that way......
just found your channel, watch you fix up your boat my dream one day !!!!!!!
You Da man James
Very good reasoning - your thinking matches the boat (mine is #272 built in '67) Best of luck and think about joining the Chesapeake Bay Alberg 30 Association - lots of A30 experience there.
Thanks Mike, stoked to hear you have #272! I contacted them and when I have some extra cash that I am not putting into my boat (i know it never stops, but) I will join the Association!
Curious what you think about a full keep with a swing keel built into it.
Looking at a Luders 28 Offshore that has this setup
Amazing videos as always !
Seller had no idea that you’ll actually will do it!!
curious why the 1972 cut off? I'm looking at a 1979 cape dory myself
Theres another beautiful boat waiting for you when you are ready !
subbed. i love what i'm seeing here. i'm down in wilmington myself with my formosa 41 from 1971 and would genuinely enjoy cruising together :)
Happy for you.
Do love a good resto. Subbed man....
Fair Winds!
Sailor James I set up an instagram account so I could share a picture. If I follow you on Instagram does that mean you'll see it?
Oh the foreshadowing at 2:33 I've been watching your more recent videos and popped back to this, well ill just say that as much as I find you impressive, there is that spark in all humans, there is no need to live in a prison of the mind, and I hope to buy my first boat next month, a spirit 28, I'm just apprehensive about the 1.55m keel. Any thoughts?
Just saw this and subscribed. Very cool stuff! Looking forward to the adventure!
Thanks Captain Scurvy! theres a new video on the way of us cleaning the bottom after 6 years o.o ! what a mess!
WOW!! what a bargain you got there mate :)
crazy right?
It's on RUclips somewhere, I'll try find the link for you
Can't beat the old boats if kept in good shape. The designers really knew what was needed for voyaging.
James, did you find the pirate’s plank for unruly deckhands??
That boat is so sweet. I'm sure you have fun cleaning her up. I noticed the bilge was completely dry. I"ve looked at many boats, many with inches of water. They always used the line that it rained last night. What were the top three boats on your list?
my bilge has a constant presence of nuisance water due to the inevitable prop shaft drip drip drip, but thats just part of having a boat with an inboard motor. My top three boats were Pearson Triton (27), Alberg 30, Tartan 34
Just found you man. Good video and she seems to be a solid old girl. Best of luck and I'm gonna sub right now.
Thanks for the feedback and the follow ! a new video should be up tomorrow night !
You talking here about the nightmare of losing a rudder at sea.
Lotsa luck.
What are your plan's for the ear lobe's ? I'm thinking about making a new dress .
So either you are Ed Gein or an out of work comedian
James- An Alberg 30 has popped up in my neighborhood for next to nothing! I had sworn I wouldn't own a boat with an inboard( may seem crazy) atom voyages has a seg. on making an outboard in the aft lazorette. Which has me considering it!
they are amazing boats! Yves Gelinas has an outboard installed on Jean Du Sud as well
Great boat , just found your channel, great stuff, keep going. ----- Skipper Andy
Awesome !
Its my first season on my privateer 26 , had your same thought process, get ready find a giant list of to does. My only suggestion, is tackle each project one or two at a time. Right now Im stuck on a mooring can, fixing my ignition and steering cables. Best of luck! Also where you sailing out of ?
mlysy459 yeah totally have to do them in small groups to not get overwhelmed, I sail out of San Pedro (Los Angeles)
Nice Deal. I am Looking at a couple That I hope can work as yours did. That Boat Tip Top Fully Ready should sell for $20.000
