It's a shame the Galaxie didn't have the factory 3 speed on the floor. The three speed back in the day was actually faster than the 4 speed. A 3 speed on the column was faster than the 4 speed also. If the car would have had the C-6 autoshifter it would have been faster still. The four speed in those cars was a real nice thing to have and it made the car nice to drive in town but it wasn't that great for racing. It's a shame they put the 360 in the little Mopar because it was a real plug to begin with. The 360 could put out some pretty good power but it needed a good carb that was a big CFM in order to push enough air into it's throat, then with factory headers and a little bit better cam they were a real torque monster and could run with the old 383s. I had a 360 in a Plymouth Trailduster that I built and it really would run nice. It had the posi rear and it was built like I explained above. I used it for the swamp and woods a lot. I once pulled out a pretty large tractor that was bogged down to the axle with that Trailduster. It had gobs of power and torque running through the 3 speed torqueflite tranny. The downside was that it got 10 miles per gallon no matter whether you babied it or ran at 80 mph-still 10 mpg no matter what you did. That is why I didn't keep it. I washed it then took an entire bottle of Armor All and it shined like a new penny, Brought it to the auction in Houston and sold it for $600 more than I paid for it to some Mexicans that took it back to Mexico.

The exhaust stacks were less restrictive as trucks enjoyed more lenient emissions standards at the time. Which helped make Li'l Red the fastest accelerating American production vehicle for 1979. Possibly true for '78 as well.
Correct… It’s was the other way around though. Fastest production vehicle of 78 and possibly 79. The government caught up with them and they required catalytic converters in 79
@@74beeper97 Thanks, I knew I was on the right, er, "track" more or less. Haven't read up on the trivia in a while. I know they had the Trans Am and Corvette licked in acceleration for 1978. @@74beeper97 So looked into it a little more and a Dodge truck forum states that the Midnite Express was a converted black Warlock and the decals were dealer added along with the stacks. Also says that any available V-8 could be had in them.

A Chrysler-loving friend of ours owned one briefly back in the 90s, I did get a few rides in it. A couple of beautiful vehicles right there. The lines on a 65 Galaxy are just gorgeous. And the Little Red Express was a definite hot rod in 1979. Ford's hottest engine offering in the Mustang was only 140hp and just had a 2bbl. The Z28 was under 200hp and even though the Trans Am had a 400/4 speed option that was 220hp the weak 185hp 403 was the most common engine in those cars and most had a 2.56 rear gear so they ran the quarter mile as long as it took for the earth to orbit the sun!
I had a 71 Chevy shortbed in 1980 that ran 12.60 quarter mile. But I had disconnected the secondaries on my 750 double pumper to save gas when daily driving. I was challenged by one of these while driving to work one day, thinking no problem, but I lost! I never disconnected the secondaries again!
A 4 speed in a full sized Galaxie has got to be just as rare as a Lil Red Express! Even still, I was damned impressed how the driver of the truck consistently shaved big numbers off his times. That proves the power is there, and technique is all that's needed. With some more track time and some fine tuning, I bet he breaks into the high 14s. You forgot the 79 Trans Am 400- 4 speed with an actual 260net HP and 320 lb of torque good for 15.3 in the quarter mile. Pontiac started the muscle car craze and they ended it.
To me it's just sad to see how slow these things are especially that Galaxy you would think that thing would do at least an 11 second quarter mile I guess not and a little truck had a little bit of power not much typical 70s la bambas oh whatever happened to the '60s 454 427 or 428 s 396s 340s 4:40s 426 hemmes and so many more thanks for the video bro cool.

I always thought that the Express trucks of the late 70's deserved a really nice engine , like an early hemi would be perfect in these. Whether or not it would win against the Ford , it would still be cooler either way !!!
Not a bad showing for the Galaxy. A 390 4 spd up against a 360 auto, ok. Well Own a '79 Lil Red and that damn truck would pass anything but a gas pump.

It's really too bad the Dodge boys didn't try the whole muscle truck thing when they could have dumped a Hemi or 440 under the hood. Those were such sweet trucks, and if they weren't so rare I'd be all over it with a Gen 3 Hemi swap

Bring it on mate 👍👍👍👍👍
The old dodge did good the story behind the dodge makes this more special. This is what gives cars and trucks a soul.
1983 at newengland dragways in n.h. I ran 15.4 and 15.7 with identical stock lil red with 20,000 miles ,against aN 81 c 10 CHEVV P.U. BONE STOCK 350 THAT DID 18.1 AND18.3 TIMES. LIKE THE LIL RED ITWAS LOW MILES AND MINT. ITS ALL ABOUT WHO,S DRIVING
Galaxy has this
You forgot the 79 Trans Am 400- 4 speed with an actual 260net HP and 320 lb of torque good for 15.3 in the quarter mile.
The Galaxie looks like an unmarked police car. I can picture a couple of detectives in fedoras sitting up front smoking cigarettes after busting one of those damn hippies for dealing the dope.
Great matchup!? Lol jk! Love both cars! I thought the galaxie would have this one, but I should have known to never underestimate Mopar power lol! still both great cars, just a little surprised seeing the epic lil red Express keep up with that awesome galaxie! Thanks for another awesome video! P.s. keep that commentary and fart jokes coming! That makes the video all the better lol! 👊😁
wasn`t the warlock even more deadly ? a fellow i know claims to have one with a 440 in it ,
Well, that's unusual. But I think the Ford will win.
Good guess 👍
Nice opening LOL
I always thought that the Express trucks of the late 70's deserved a really nice engine , like an early hemi would be perfect in these. Whether or not it would win against the Ford , it would still be cooler either way !!!
What time is it when ford passes a dodge? Its tin past tin
It's a good race
Flip the breather upside down, remove the spare tire and tailgate, take a leak, then run her again 😂
Not a bad showing for the Galaxy. A 390 4 spd up against a 360 auto, ok. Well Own a '79 Lil Red and that damn truck would pass anything but a gas pump.
No no no,it's a "truck" that's featured on "car'z and zebra's" lady!!
1978 LiL Red was a lot quicker!!!! I drove 5 stock 78&79's when they were not that old! And the 78 won all the time,no matter what 78 we took out..
OK. This will be good.
Slow but close and that makes it exciting. Also the only acceptable pick-up truck to have diesel stacks. All others are just wrong...
The 79 LRE was a slug compared to the 78. The 78 had hi flow heads and cam...with no cats.
C & Z says facts about the 14-15 sec time differences and still we see guys posting their myth bs haha!
Always wanted a black warlock neat looking truck. I was all of about 10 when they came out
3800 lbs aint bad for a truck...newer camaros stangs challengers weigh how much now?
LRE put on a good show but not quite good enough... both are cool machines
I love cars and zebras don't change anything 😂
It's really too bad the Dodge boys didn't try the whole muscle truck thing when they could have dumped a Hemi or 440 under the hood. Those were such sweet trucks, and if they weren't so rare I'd be all over it with a Gen 3 Hemi swap
They did put 440's in those trucks
I know for sure the warlocks commonly had 440s. Not sure if the lil reds had that as an option but it wouldn't surprise me.
